ok, I want to remove my ABS system from my 98 GTT. Now, before anyone goes off about safety and all that, I am an old school driver. I dont trust a computer to do the driving for me... if any of you have read my earlier posts about the ECU and engine problems... I'm not sure if I wouldn't rather convert my car to carbs! LOL

Anyway, this is the newest car I've ever owned, and I admit that it's much more sophisticated than I'm used to. on early '90s cars and older, removing ABS is basically just a matter of yanking the components and computer and replacing the master cylinder and then pulling out the ABS light on the dash more or less.

My question is this: is it still the same with the R34? or does the ABS computer talk to the ECU and affect ECU functions?

I'd appreciate any constructive comments. I have better brake control than any computer I've come across (and I trust my brake modulation alot more too) and I want to save the couple of Kilos from pulling all the ABS junk. Thanks all

ABS sensors are also part of the TCS system. I think Hanaldo on hear is currently having trouble making his car work after trying to delete the TCS. He's using a Nistuned ECU, which makes it possible, but apparently not necessarily trivial to do so. Other's who have done it have changed to different engine management, which elimiates that part of the problem.

I'm putting an R34 Neo using the factory ECU (Nistuned) into my R32 right now (well, not right now seeing as the car is nearly complete in Adelaide, but I'm in the sphincter of the universe right now!) And I wouldn't be surprised if I get DTC codes and so one from not having any TCS inputs into the ECU when I eventually get it fired up.

Here's my tip. Don't pull out the ABS system unless you are forced to, you'd just be making unpleasantness for yourself that isn't necessary. ABS isn't as evil as HICAS, it's a good thing in it's own right.

Not to sound non-constructive but doesn't ABS only kick in during "emergency breaking", so pretty much when you slam your foot down in panic or just generally really really hard it'll pump the breaks for you... Old school driver or not I don't really see the point in removing it unless that car is for track work, where perhaps would be the only justified place to removed it... But even then... Considering how much trouble it'll take to do after reading the last post...

You can always pull ABS fuse and see if there's any noticable difference before doing any parts elimination.

or just disconnect the ABS sensors on the front LHS, RHS and at the rear diff....

but why??? I will never buy a car without ABS ever again, it is god sent. If bicycles had ABS I would bike them

thanks for the replies. As for why? like I said, I want to be the one in control of when the braking happens at all time. I've had amature racing liscenes in both Canada and here in Hong Kong, and more than 10 years of on track and street drifting... I don't trust ABS or TCS or HICAS at the limits... they kick in when you LEAST want them to in that situation. I agree, ABS and traction control is great for the average driver (no offense to anyone who likes them here) but I don't panic brake when I'm behind the wheel, and I once had ABS lock up on me while going down a particularly steep mountan pass at about 90km/h sideways... I'm sure you can imagine how scary THAT would be seeing the edge of a cliff coming at you and you just lost control of your car.

I find I can brake alot harder and shorter right on the limit of locking than any ABS system I've come across.

    • Have a vb in honour of the car comming back
    • It was a great, but typical track day, and some VB was ingested at the night time debrief 🤪
    • And so, to round this out, I couldn't be happier to confirm @MBS206 has decided to buy the car. He drove down from sunny QLD with a trailer last week and it is off to its new home today. I'll let Matt confirm on next steps but I understand broadly that the plan is to leave it pretty much as is, and just get some quality wheel time with a nicely balanced car that is pretty much track ready. There are a few a jobs still to be done first but nothing too major and I think its a very smart buy Dinner last night at the Paragon with a round of VBs (mostly) for Neil
    • Well, 50 pages and the end of a chapter for this car. We took it out for a shakedown at Wakie yesterday, and everything went well. There were a couple of niggles: - Oil cooler fitting leak - tightened, cleaned, stopped leaking - Radiator cap overflow fitting was leaking....Mark called it, the overflow fitting was threaded in and not tight....tightened, tested and held pressure - Small oil leak at the rear of the block, probably the turbo oil feed - too hot to get at it comfortably but probably just needs to be nipped up - leak at the driver's side rear brake line where it meets the hardline. Fitting wasn't loose, so Matt backed it off and back on, no further leaks - there's also a leak somewhere on the top of the fuel tank, maybe that cross over fuel line - that was has been left to fix when its on a hoist Otherwise than those niggles the car went great, turned great and stopped great so it was a very successful day out. I'm always really nervous when a car first hits the track after a long break, especially with a brand new engine as well but it was great. VID-20251011-WA0007.mp4  Big thanks to @The Bogan who dropped by and helped out, @MBS206 and my nephew Lachlan the apprentice.  Neil's wife Mel also surprised the hell out of all of us by dropping by; she's up in Tamworth these days but was travelling to Melbourne so had plausible deniability for turning up at the garage, it was great to see her but also obviously a bit sad all round.
