Hi guys.

Ive just got my car back from the shop where they installed a gcg high flow and did a tune.

The car runs amazing, with only one minor problem.

When under heavy boost it sometimes has a misfire (hard to explain, but feesl like a short loss of power. bit like a stutter.

This only happesn sometimes and usually when im in boosting hard in 3rd or 4th (around the 400rpm).

I guess it feels like a minor electrical problem (not that im qualified to know!)

I've done some reading but basically so many things to check I dont know where to start.

Anyone have any ideas before i take it back to shop?

thanks

How old are youe coil packs?

What type of plugs are you using @ what size gap?

If the shop tuned it, I would expwct them to put new plugs in.

I would be pointing to old coil lacks that are breaking down under boost

I have a feeling you are probably right with coil packs?? I've never changed them since ive had car (5 Years)

Car made really good power considering the little mods (i couldnt believe the dyno sheet).

I had the plugs done a few years ago and used irridiums.

Say it is the coil packs (cos i dont know what else it could be!) is there any harm leaving it like this? Specially considering i rarely need to drive it that hard.

Thanks!!!!!

thanks for the replies guys.

In terms of the tuning im not exactly sure. Basically my stock turbo let go so i got a GCG hi flow. The tuning was on the dyno to get it perform as best as it could without comprimising reliability.

It is my daily driver so I need to make sure it is reliable.

like i said I was surprised surprised to see the dyno sheet (225kw) and how amazing it runs.

most times the car is spot on and feels great. only occassionly when i drive it very hard (which i dont normally do, did it to see how the turbo felt) does it do it.

I have a feeling it is the plugs or coil packs.... not that id know.

If it is - considering that hte problem hardly ever happens could i be causing any problems be driving it like that?

thanks for your the replies!!

yeah if its making that sort of power you will be hitting the standard ECU protection - TTPMax

what are you using to control boost, is it a controller or just the actuator spring?

if you are using a boost controller turn it to 2psi and see how it goes

if you arent using a boost controller then you are stuck with the minimum boost possible from the acutator spring, its probably 1 bar, which is prob too much for stock ecu

let us know answer to first question (controller or not)

have you got a fuel pump? this thing could be leaning out on boost if you haven't, mine leaned out on the stock turbo and 0.85kgcm2 and yours is highflow with more boost

thanks for the replies again.

the boost controller is just the manual boost T, the cheap $30 ones.

not sure i get how the boost is working, well specifically why the minimum would be 1 bar? my standard turbo was set to 10psi. now with the hiflow the shop set it electronically to 11 (ok well on the dyno sheet that is where it is making the power). that said, my gauge can be pushed to 14.

Fuel pump is stock also.... my plan was to only upgrade things when and if the break. Hence the turbo.

Thanks again!

hey mate as old mate said a couple of replys ago i would start with new plugs bkr6es there $8.20 each at burson, I would say its missing due to the car making more power and ur shitty old plugs cant handle the load in 3rd and 4th and if you can i would replace the fuel pump asap cause the standard pump would only be good for a little over 200rwkw and im guessing its the original pump so it around 15yo and u dont want to lean ur motor out everytime u hit boost

ok. I've popped the top of and got to the coil packs / plugs.

Changing plugs will be my next step - though wondering if there is any way to determine whether one of the coil packs is stuffed?

I thought runnign the car in the dark might have shown sparks if there was a crack. i may have been wrong but I definetly didn't see anything.

any help appreciated!

    • Even more fun, leave all the ADAS stuff plugged in, but in different locations, hopefully avoid any codes!   And honestly, all these new cars with their weird electronics. Pull all the electronics out Duncan, and just shove an aftermarket ECU and if needed a trans controller in, along with a PDM. Make it run basic but race car styled!
    • To follow up a question from earlier too since I had the front bar off again (fking!) This is what is between the bumper and the drivers side wheel And this is the navigator side, only one thing but its a biggy! So basically....no putting coolers in the wheel arches without a lot of moving other stuff. Assuming I move to properly race prepping this car I'll take that job on and see how the computers respond to removing a whole bunch of ADAS modules
    • So I prepped the car for another track day on Wednesday (will be interesting to see coolant temps post flushing out and the larger reservoir, with a forecast of 3-14 being 20o cooler than last time I took it out). Couple of things to mention; since I am just driving the car and not taking a support vehicle, I took the rear seats out and just loaded the back up Team Trackday style. Look at all that space! To cover off removing the rear seat....it is weird (note the hybrid is probably different because it wouldn't have folding rear seats) Basically, you remove the lower seat base, very similar to a r series but it is a clip that pulls forward to release the base rather than it being bolted down. Easy Then, you need to remove the side section of the rear seat on each side. There is a 14mm head nut at the bottom of the side piece, the it slides upwards off a hook at the top to release; you also need to unhook the seatbelt from the loop at the top. Then the centre piece is weird. You need to release/fold the seats forward with the tab in the boot on each side From there, there are 2,x12mm headed bolts holding the rear of each seat to the folding bracket, under the trim between the rear seat and the boot (4x christmas tree clips there, they suck). The seat is out but you can see where the bolts attach to the bracket
    • As discussed in the previous post, the bushes in the 110 needed replacing. I took this opportunity to replace the castor bushes, the front lower control arm, lower the car and get the alignment dialled in with new tyres. I took it down to Alignment Motorsports on the GC to get this work done and also get more out of the Shockworks as I felt like I wasn't getting the full use out of them.  To cut a very long story short, it ended up being the case the passenger side castor arm wouldn't accept the brand new bush as the sleeve had worn badly enough to the point you could push the new bush in by hand and completely through. Trying a pair of TRD bushes didn't fix the issue either (I had originally gone with Hardrace bushes). We needed to urgently source another castor arm, and thankfully this was sourced and the guys at the shop worked on my car until 7pm on a Saturday to get everything done. The car rides a lot nicer now with the suspension dialled in properly. Lowered the car a little as well to suit the lower profile front tyres, and just bring the car down generally. Eternally thankful for the guys down at the shop to get the car sorted, we both pulled big favours from our contacts to get it done on the Saturday.  Also plugged in the new Stedi foglights into the S15, and even from a quick test in the garage I'm keen to see how they look out on the road. I had some concerns about the length of the LED body and whether it'd fit in the foglight housing but it's fine.  I've got a small window coming up next month where I'll likely get a little paint work done on the 110 to remove the rear wing, add a boot wing and roof wing, get the side skirt fixed up and colour match the little panel on the tail lights so that I can install some badges that I've kept in storage. I'm also tempted to put in a new pair of headlights on the 110.  Until then, here's some more pictures from Easter this year.
    • I would put a fuel pressure gauge between the filter and the fuel rail, see if it's maintaining good fuel pressure at idle going up to the point when it stalls. Do you see any strange behavior in commanded fuel leading up to the point when it stalls? You might have to start going through the service manual and doing a long list of sensor tests if it's not the fuel system for whatever reason.
