Just a few questions about the SR20DET black top engine 1996 and later models.

1) how many klms would one of these engines do before spitting the dumming? 250k? 300k?

2) how high can you safely set boost on the standard turbo with a good front mount and exhaust system? Do they use ceramic wheels or what? What make/model are they?

3) What is the best value turbo upgrade/hiflow option? I would like a reliable 15 PSI or there abouts.

4) Is the standard computer tunable for fuel/ignition timing? If not what is the best value aftermarket system? I have seen a PFC without hand controller for $1300 is that good, worth it?

5) Anyone know where I could get intercooler piping for front mount at a good price? Want the type that you cut a hole for near the water bottle and pass down there, rather than running it to the other side of the engine bay.

6) With boost set to around 12 PSI, front mount cooler, full exhaust, aftermarket air filter and cold air intake, HD clutch, what kind of power figures would you be looking at?

Anything else you think is worth know about these engines would also be appreciated. Thanks

As usual, check with a local workshop...but as far as my limited knowledge goes :

The factor of an engines life is depenant on a) How well you treat it, servicing etc etc. B) What mods are done to the engine, the more boost the less life etc etc. c) Luck.

The SR20 has either the T25 or T28, pretty sure its a T28, which has a steel wheel and is pretty useful up to about 1 Bar or 15psi (yes its really 14.7psi!), the turbo could probably do upto 18psi but you start running into heatsoke intercooler problems and maxing out your injectors. Of course other turbos are available.

SR20's can be prone to blowing headgaskets and know to lift their head under heavy boost (this is a matter of opinon.) Which is solved by having the head bolts drilled out and replaced with larger items. Or just add a metal headgasket, and be careful.

Intercooler, many people can help you out in Sydney. Alot of people use the HKS/Apexi/Trust etc etc...personally I'd save some cash and use someone local with a good rep...ask around your area. Any good intercooler shop should be able to get your desired result on the piping side of things.

Computers. Apexi PFC, you really can't go past it for a street appilcation.

If you after big power, one of the first things I'd do would be upgrade of the fuel system. The SR20 is a great motor, the boost hit is very powerful, and they produce results from their mods.

What car is it in ? 200SX, Silvia, 180SX or GTi-R ???

Thanks for the info that was great! I don't really know any tuning shops around Brisbane, if I needed to get something done I would probably take it down to Autotech on the Gold Coast or something.

The car will be a 96 S14 200SX. Already has exhaust and pod filter, going to do the heatshield and big front mount cooler straight away, Is it safe to crank the boost up to 1 bar on the stock turbo as long as the intercooler has been upgraded? I generally drive pretty sedately but like to have the power there when I want to play! :)

Just trying to work out my best value for money mods and what not at the moment, I have an SAFC in the cupboard already that I never got round to fitting to my R33, just tossing up whether to sell that and buy a powerfc or just keep it and fit it. Depends how important timing control is with the S14 under these conditions and how important fuel control is.

Also do you know if you can remap the ignition/fuel maps on the stock ecu? Cause that might be the go rather than aftermarket management, lot cheaper as I don't have that much cash to spend.

No idea - completely dependant on how its been treated.

On the black tops its a T28, good for around 1 bar or so with a FMIC and decent zorst. - a GOOD value upgrade is the GTiR turbo... get it rebuilt, steel wheels and BB - NIIIICE, it'll bolt onto your manifold and to your dump pipe so its minimal fuss, i'll be doing that to my 180 and i am aiming for 11's.

If you are not going to go all out, forget it, the PFC is super-cool but only if you will use all the functions... you can get an Apexi S-AFC 2nd hand for like $400 - $500 and it'll do all your fuel controlling.

Any exhaust shop or metal manufacturer... these will have to be custom made if you have a custom 'cooler.

160rwkw-ish.

my R33 made 168rwkw with those mods and only 9psi.

Hey thanks for the info Prank, very handy, I figured you would probably answer having just scored yourself a 180sx :D I was actually going to go for the 180sx myself but now looks like it will be an s14, which is not so bad, the s14 can be made a nice looking car, and it has the later model engine with the VVT and being an Australian delivered car the insurance is a LITTLE bit cheaper which never hurts.

I already have an SAFC in the cupboard ready to go. What I was wondering is how important is it to have control over the ignition timing as well as the fuel? How much extra power would you gain and is it important for reliability when running around 1 bar.

I bought the SAFC originally as I thought since the car is a daily driver and is generally for street use with the odd run at the strip there is really no justification for the PFC, probably still holds true but PFC's are just very cool!

Is there much of a gain to be had by going to aftermarket cam gears? These seem to be a relatively cheap upgrade.

BTW it should be noted that the SAFC does nothing for the skyline if you install it in the cupboard in your computer room :) (never got round to getting it fitted, stupid but true)

Prank - Let me know what you do with your turbo, I would be interested in getting the same thing (depending on the cost), maybe we might be able to squeeze a discount getting two the same.

Mark at Hills has a few GTiR turbo's up there atm, i'll get some prices from him.

Not sure about ignition timing, again, i dont think its neccassary until you are running some decent power... you could get an ITC from apexi as well... the great thing is, if you ever feel you need to upgrade to a PFC, you can sell the SAFC and whatever else for a good price!! But yeah - the PFC is super cool.

Not sure about cam gears, i know they made a slight difference on the '33s... but they are pretty cheap atm, so i might give it a go down the track.

yeah - the insurance on the 180 is only 1800 for me, so its not too bad.. it was around the same cost for an S14a...

Yeh being in Brisbane it is cheaper again for me which is nice, even my R33 was only costing around $1350, as opposed to almost twice that when it was in Sydney!

Yeh get some more info on the turbos and see if you can squeeze a discount for getting 2 :) Send me an email at [email protected] if you get some info.

ZerO you should bring your car to Toowoomba for the tuning to CramerDP (Very good)

On the cam gears, we did mine and my friends the other day and got some good gains but it takes a lot of dyno hours to do them, the biggest prob with your car is the fact that you will have to remove the cam cover every time you make an adjustment and this will add hugely to the labour not to mention how difficult they would be to install with a chain drive timing belt:(. Yes you can buy a pair of HKS gears for around $350 but the time it takes to tune them makes them an expensive mod. Tim at CramerDP actuall ran my car at ever setting (Retard/Advance) on both the cams and mapped it all on the dyno then overlaid them to see where the best gains were then combined the two best results to achieve a good increase.

My mates red top SR is making around 180rwhp with:

ARE Front mount

3" turbo back system

Big fuel pump

13-14psi

Stock air box and filter

and has run a 13.2sec 1/4 (I hate SR's;) )

add tho this a s-afc and you could nearly crack 210rwhp.

Gotta get the car first! Hopefully it will all happen this week and I will be able to bring the car out to your dyno day and see how she goes. I can have a talk with the guys there about mods and my power goals when I am there. Doesn't take long to drive out to Toowoomba, and I like driving anyway!

Once I have the car I might bring it down to willowbank one night when you and Jay51 are there and have a go.

zero you goals should be achievable you ccan get daughter board for the sr's but I would allway keep the s-afc if you not going power fc. chiptorque do ecu mods as well. as for turbo up grades think stock or hiflowed stock for reasonable power . think t3 or bigger for awsome power.

cheers

meggala

I would say probably a fair amount of money, Although the SR does seem to respond REALLY well to basic performance mods.

I am looking out for prices on a high flow BB T28 with steel wheels at the moment then bigger fuel pump, fuel regulator and perhaps injectors. But I probably won't have enough money to do it all at once like I want to.

Have to get the car first, then get the cooler piping and see how much cash i have left over after.

The black top came on the s14 and s15 and some later models of 180sx.  I believe that the black top has variable valve timing where the red top doesn't.

Don't know of anything else.

Im pretty sure this is right

Sr20det Redtop - S13 Silvia , 180sx 91-94 - T25G turbo - NoVVT

Sr20Det Blacktop - 180sx 94+ - T28 Turbo - NoVVT

SR20Det Graytop - S14 series I - T28 Turbo - VVT

SR20Det Graytop - S14 series II S15 - GT28BB Turbo - VVT

So yea there is a sr20det blacktop different to the aus/jap s14/s15 engines .

I got this from nissansilvia.co.nz

1. What type of turbo will my Silvia have ??

There is a heap of confusion about the turbo's that are fitted to Silvia's. I'm hoping that this info is current and correct, as it was emailed to me by a semi reliable source. But more than anything I hope this clears things up.

T25 - Commonly found on the CA18DET S13 Silvia's and 180SX. Compressor - 45 trim T3 wheel with 0.48 A/R T25 diffuser Turbine - 1.77" wheel (62 trim), 0.49 A/R T25 housing

T25G - Usually found on the S13 SR20DET Silvia's and 180SX. Compressor - 50 trim T3 wheel with 0.8A/R T25 diffuser Turbine - 1.77" wheel (I think the trim is 62), 0.64 A/R T25 housing

T28 - Found on the S14 / 200SX. Compressor - 60 trim T3 with T04B 0.6AR diffuser Turbine - 1.85" wheel (76 trim), 0.64 A/R T25 housing

T28 - On the Quad Throttle Body Pulsar GTiR SR20's. Compressor - 60 trim T3 with T04B 0.6AR diffuser Turbine - 1.85" wheel (76 trim), 0.64 A/R T25 housing

GT2530 - Fitted to the S15/200SX Silvia. If you know the spec's please email me.

Australian delivered 200sx should definetly have a ballbearing turbo , all the reviews of the aus 200sx pointed to that fact . I have been told by some very knowledgable sr20 tuners that some late model series II s14s will also have a ballbearing turbo but I am not 100% sure

    • Sounds good Hmm suppose the main thing is, how much do you care about this car? The filler doesn't make for a very good water barrier lol. If there was a tiny little bit of rust forming now, that in 3 to 5 years time becomes obvious under the paint (starts to bubble up), would it bother you?
    • I already have the ability to datalog the voltage... what I can't do is correlate it to what the gauge is showing when I'm looking at the data at a later date. Or something like this. Except getting the oil to 125C+ involves me going 200+kmh at the track so you can imagine this is a little tricky unless I do something like note what the voltage is when I am at the top of 5th gear so I have a point to reference on. Drove car today. O2 still reading richer because hopefully not a leak instead of massive restriction I've introduced. Car really doesn't sound like a LS. It's quite strange. Pulled a bit of fuel out up top. This does potentially explain why my spark plugs looked like the car was running pretty over-rich. If I was tuning it to a ~12.7 which in reality was far richer than that in the past. It will be handy to have the dyno WB to compare my WB to to compare notes that's for sure. At this point I'm happy to just sit in the passenger seat and tune the thing given I've got about 7 million hours on the platform lol.
    • Yeah I understand you have to pay for an updated map or subscription service or something. But I can't even find a current map for Australia. My map is dated 2017, but didn't this car version still sell in Australia until 2021?   Also, just as an aside, the navigation system warns you of traffic incidences ahead.....why would they include that on a map they knew is not receiving live information. I am forever going to be warned of an incident that probably existed for 30 minutes 8 years ago.
