How much are you willing to spend? Off the top of my head these would be my preferences $$ aside - in order of preference, for the power and boost level on E85:

1 - Borg Warner EFR8374 with .92a/r housing (internally gated T4) will easily make that power at that boost level on E85, designed to run on petrol engines so should handle the heat etc - and should be the most responsive turbo out there which will comfortably do that power

2 - Borg Warner S300SX FMW with .91a/r housing (externally gated T4), laggier than the EFR (arguably a little more responsive than the PT6262) capable of similar power to the EFR. Nudges out the PT6262 for me due to having a less dodgy track record in terms of reliability.

3 - Precision PT6262 with .84a/r housing (externally gated T4) will also easily make that power level on E85, though is by reputation laggier than the above two options - which comes with its ability to make power than all the other options. Potentially redundant as all of the turbos I am mentioning will do over 400wkw at 22psi on E85 with a certain amount of comfort.

4 - Garrett GTX3582R with 1.06a/r housing (externally gated T4) - Probably closest in spool and power potential to the PT6262, marked it lower because of hearing too many horror stories regarding the TS housings on these failing when used in anger, would like hear things which give me some confidence that this is an ATP-version specific problem, or something which has or will be dealt with.

On ethanol 22psi is low boost imo, as long as you have a modern compressor wheel that will cope with the higher pressures, without generating too much heat. Good cooling will still be required obviously. Is it to be a track car? Built engine?

The GIO Gibson 32 GTR was running over 40psi in race trim on stock looking old tech turbo's, reliably.

I'm aware it's on the low side, I will probably run higher boost for fun times but at the track (yes track car) it will be around that boost level (20-22psi).

Good cooling, HKS oil cooler and HKS Type R intercooler, stock radiator but will upgrade if needed, stock motor with 1.2mm head gasket and mods to hopefully combat oiling issues (pump gears, ati balancer and sump extension)

Thanks for the reply, I'm actually really surprised you didn't suggest a FP HTA GT3582R, it's probably the top of my list

1. Potentially but still worried about reliability and supply

2. Will look into more

3. From everything I can see the 6262 performs exactly the same as a T04Z, which I had and was great but probably looking for better response at the track

4. Another option I've been pondering but 1.06 scares me, do they come in a 0.8ish T4 divided?

Only didn't mention that because you specified twin scroll - I am unsure what housing they use, if it is of a better material/casting than the ones you get from ATP then yes.... it'd be the winning choice for me. If it was for single entry turbo choice then it would have been #1 for sure :) And in hindsight, I should have mentioned that as I actually mentioned the GTX (wasn't going to include it)

1. Potentially but still worried about reliability and supply Fair enough too. I am starting to feel more comfortable about both, there is a company with the TS T4 EFR8374s in stock - a mate got one within 3 days of ordering from them. The reliability is something that does more high risk because of the epic fail period, though it sounds like a specific cause has been found and addressed so not as concerning as before. Thinking about it, yeah I'd probably lean towards the other options until those other two points are proven to be no longer an issue.

2. Will look into more Sweet, I have the impression the Tilton EVO had a variation of this turbo at WTAC closer in spec to the 9180!?)

3. From everything I can see the 6262 performs exactly the same as a T04Z, which I had and was great but probably looking for better response at the track I would have expected a bit better response from the PT6262 - somewhere between GT3582R and T04Z but haven't experienced a PT6262 myself so could be wrong

4. Another option I've been pondering but 1.06 scares me, do they come in a 0.8ish T4 divided? I believe they do. I've been in a couple of cars running the 1.06 TS and imho they haven't been anywhere near as bad as you'd expect looking at them - nothing like the 1.06 single scroll things

Chris made 440kW on his 26/30 on pump fuel @ 22psi with his EFR8374 .92, so should be able to drop down to the EFR7670 and still get 400kW on juice

Fullrace have told me EFR supplies were supposed to get much better from September, potentially will also have a prefabbed downpipe to suit GTRs soon, all going to plan

Chris made that on a hub dyno with a very aggressive head setup on an RB30. Consider his to be 390ish-kw on a Dyno Dynamics - though I guess that'd still potentially equate to 480+kw with E85 on a DD :D

Tilton had the S300SX with 66mm compressor wheel and 1.00A/R turbine housing, same as what is going on my engine.

Think I've almost convinced myself that this is the way to go, also looking at GT3788R which seem to make similar power/response

Nice, the FMW S300SX I had in mind was also the 83mm variant - just to be clear :) Let us know what you go with, will be good to hear how it goes.

This is the one. http://www.full-race...-fmw-turbo.html

What manifolds have you looked at Simon?

I've already got a T88-34D 15cm kit on the car (as scradly alluded to in his post) so it's a Trust T4 divided stainless job and 50mm gate

Oh ok, so you intend on keeping the manifold and wastegate I assume?

So far my 83/75 300sx .91 has made 375rwkw on pump at only 18 psi...

That is on a conservative dyno with only tomei 260 cams..

Should make 450 with a bit more boost :D and then add E85!

Interested in your thoughts on your tubro (considering it's very similar to the one I'm looking at)! If you loaded up 3rd of 4th gear on a flat road when are you getting 1 bar of boost?

Honestly I haven't really been driving the car much as I'm interstate atm, on the dyno it makes a bar at around 4500 which a touch laggy but in saying that the car isn't complete yet and the cam gears are set at 0 and running fairly rich, boost is just running off gate pressure as well...

If your super keen PM Piggaz as he will be driving the car out to UNIGROUP on Monday for the fuel system upgrade and retune

  • 2 weeks later...

Ok I've been trying to research like crazy and been in touch with Geoff at fullrace who recommends either a prototype S300P, S300SX FMW or wait for a EFR8374.

Not convinced that the S300P will make enough power for me, Joeys results from his turbo scare me from the S300SX FMW (as it's similar) and the EFR8374 is still a while away, plus only comes in a large T4 divided external gate option and all three turbos seem like they may have fitment issues on the current manifold.

The Garrett GTX53R doesn't come with a decent twin scroll T4 housing (only seem to be able to find the crappy ATP housing which I'm not at all keen on running)

So that leaves the GT3788R 0.89 T4 divided housing or the PTE 6262 CEA 0.84 T4 divided. Not that keen on the Garrett because I have yet to find many results and it's really an unknown.

The 6262 looks like a winner, I have looked at JEZ's results in a bit more detail and it does look more responsive than a T04Z while still capable of making big power so that looks like the winner.

Now the choice is to get a surge ported from cover or not and where to buy it from...

I did not know the S300P was available? Did he elaborate on the wheel/housing sizing on this?

    • Photo of manifold showing gate location? I mean, it's 6Boost, so we probably shouldn't be worrying, but always wroth knowing what the layout is. Plumbed back to atmosphere? Or into the dump?
    • Yes correct. Also, I'd avoid applying it to soft paint (however I doubt you'll ever have to deal with it in practice). So any paint that hasn't fully hardened, could be a 1k paint that never fully hardened or it could be a 2k paint that was laid down thick and hasn't yet fully hardened.
    • Bit of an update to this one. Having some issues on the dyno that held us back (boost spiking) and I want to pass some info over you guys and see what you think is wrong with my setup. The current readout on this dyno is 462rwkw on a low reading dyno so keep in mind it is a real world 500rwkw setup on a hub dyno. Don't read into the power figure too much as a sign of the issue. The short and curly of it is: 2.8 Litre Racepace build RB25 NEO N/A Head with VCT (internally standard however ) Borgwarner EFR 8474  Turbosmart 50mm Straight Gate + Mac valve 6Boost Manifold 4" dump to full 4" exhaust (nil restrictions) Wastegate plumbed back in and all angles in the exhaust system are acceptable and not too sharp. GFB SV52 BOV in cooler piping  Turbosmart BOV in EFR Housing   The issue we are having is it comes onto full boost for example at 4000rpm and spikes to 24/25psi, before dropping down to 17psi before slowly rising back up to the target boost of 23psi. It was extremely uncontrollable and the tuner actually had to ramp in boost progrssively with each 1000rpm on each boost setting we selected to try and reduce the amount of spiking. Sometimes we would see a drop of 10psi from the peak at the beginning of the run, to the low, until it took the next 500-1000rpm to stabilise back up to the target boost. The tuner is pretty confident that the straight gate is just a poorly designed product and leaks too much boost upon cracking the gate open and theres no way to fix it other than going to a poppet valve. He's also confient theres no ignition breakdown or floating valves. The fueling is extremely stable as well. Turbo speed is somewhere around the 109,000rpm area. The spanner in the works for me is that prior to this Borgwarner and StraightGate, the car was tuned on -5 twins at a diferent tuner, and he also had issues controlling the boost with it spiking around the same rpm range, so to me this sounds like the same issue and it can't be anything on the turbo side as this was all changed and I think the behaviour is extremely similar, if not the same. We also removed the mac valve and did a run on wastegate pressure and it still spiked and had the same behaviour. My thoughts on possibilities are: Boost Leak VCT Cam Gear isn't reliably activating consistently - (On this however, we did a run with the VCT disabled and the boost still spiked) Turbosmart BOV is not handling the boost? However this seems unlikely to not be able to handle 20psi. I have a couple of logs that I can't make sense of if anybody knows how to read them and can obtain further logs of other parameters if they are not enough, happy to pay for anyones time. The dyno readout with the power figure is the most recent last week. The other picture is from two weeks prior to that where we couldn't break 400kw (we removed the cat), however the issue of the boost control persisted. @Lithium @Piggaz @burn4005 @GTSBoy @discopotato03 I've tagged those that were quite active in recent pages here, no disrespect to those that know turbos well but I missed tagging. Cheers
    • I recently purchased a 2018 Infiniti Q60, which has an SD card navigation map. I can see my system has options for real time traffic updates etc, and am wondering if there is something I can purchase to get this working? I can see there are at least updated maps for USA and Canada, but nothing for Australia. Surely Infiniti took changing road systems and city expansions into account when they decided to use an inbuilt navigation over Android Auto/Apple Car Play, or are we doomed to drive on streets that don't exist in the navigation system if you drive to a new area?
