I recently bought a set of factory HID exenons to replace my non exenons in the r34. Question is the plugs are different from non exenon to exenon, and I'm a little unsure of cutting and splicing etc...had a search on here and can't find much on installation. I have a loom off my old r34 which had the xenons, but want to avoid a loom change if possible- and also the old car had the headlight height adjutment switch in cab near steering column and i was wondering how hard this is to install into my new one that does not have this.... Would be nice to have it fully functioning and done properly as apposed to a hack Job to get by.,,,

Anyone done the conversion or know where to find wiring diagrams on what to do etc?

Thanks in advance.

Yea I bought the factory exenon headlights-which from my understanding are the projectors and legal?not to fazed about the legality to be honest as I drove around for years with the last set of factory exenons and never had an issue with police. Main issue is wiring up as plugs are different and also the headligt height adjuster switch too...If anyone knows what's involved that'd b great.. Cheers

Even factory xenons are not legal, and will not pass through Regency. I know this from experience when I tried to get my car through Regency with Xenons. The police may not know/care, but if you get through Regency, you will have a bad day.

Cars fitted with these headlights from the factory are typically modified during compliance time to support regular (non-xenon) globes.

as mentioned above the factory xenon globes/ballast are supposed to be removed at compliance and replace with normal globes, the other day i noticed ive still got the factory ballast's but the wires have been cut, out of interest i tried to track it back through the harness but got lost. doesnt help having no idea about electronics

They could just be regular globes - like optiblue or whatever. Easiest way to find out is to look at the housing (is 'xenon' written on it), and then look at the globe itself to see if its a D2R type.

Factory xenons are legal

Sure, they are on cars sold in Australia - for the R33/34 they are not, and they're supposed to be removed at compliance time. To meet ADRs the xenons would need to have auto-leveling and washers. These cars have neither, and will not meet ADRs. If you try and pass your car through Regency with Xenons you will be almost certainly be pinged for them (I sure was). The excuse of 'well I bought my car that way' doesn't cut the mustard either.

Pretty sure these are the relevant ADRs, but I'm sure someone more knowledgable can confirm.

Australian Design Rule 13/00 – Installation of Lighting and Light Signalling Devices on other than L-Group Vehicles

6.2.6.2.1. In the case where a headlamp levelling device is necessary to satisfy the requirements of paragraphs 6.2.6.1.1. and 6.2.6.1.2., the device shall be automatic.

Australian Design Rule 75/00 - Headlamp Cleaners

6 GENERAL SPECIFICATIONS

6.1 The headlamp cleaner shall be designed and constructed to clean those parts of the light-emitting surface of the headlamp which distribute the passing beam and the driving beam so that at least the cleaning effect specified in paragraph 7 below is achieved.

I'm actually chasing up these ADRs with some relevant authorities (in NSW).

ADR 13 in relation to 6.2.6.1.2 is in relation to the tolerances of the dipped beam. 6.2.6.2.1 outlines if levelling is required to meet these conditions (which honestly is all jargon to me), that levelling must be automatic. Reading into that, if levelling is not required it sounds like no automatic levelling is required - once again, I'm seeking opinions from a few VSCCS Signatories.

Though, his is hardly gospel because the R34 Xenon headlights may have never even undergone ADR testing to see if it would meet any of those requirements anyway. Not to mention the fact you will still need to mount headlight washers to satisfy ADR 75 for HIDs. If anyone with Japanese contacts can dig up the exact "ADRs" for Japan, how the lights are tested, etc there is a chance that it can be transferable to Australia.

In my opinion regarding headlight washers, it should be relatively easy. There's a whole gamut regarding their requirement but if you grab some from Hella (which would be required to be TUV certified) I can't see any reason why these would not be accepted.

Problem is still the cars haven't been complianced with xenons and no compliance ticket for the cars with xenons. I'm sure someone like IronChef can jump in and clarify about the compliancing aspect.

I suspect that would mean you'd really be looking at engineering what's essentially retrofitting of xenons to a non-xenon vehicle - which would mean going through the whole engineering process. Probably more money than it's worth.

It must have been stressful for Regency to tell you your headlights are illegal . How did you go about changing yours , did you do it yourself ?

    • I appreciate the detailed explanation, think I understand now. I spent the better part of last night reading what I could about shuffle and potential solutions. I had replaced the OEM twin turbo pipe with an alternate Y pipe that is separated further away from the turbo. The current one is from HKS and I had a previous pipe that was separated even further away, both have shuffle. I had heard that a divider can be welded in to the OEM pipe to remove turbulence, and figure that aftermarket pipes that are more separated would achieve the same thing. From what I read, most people with -10 turbos get shuffle due to their size, though it's a bit less common with -5s on a standard RB26. I think Nismoid mentioned somewhere it's because OEM recirculation piping is common in Australia with -5 cars. It seems that the recommendation tends to vary between a few options, which I've ordered in what I think is most feasible for me:  1. Retune the MAP or boost controller to try to eliminate shuffle 2. Install OEM recirculation piping 3. Something called a 'balance pipe' welded onto the exhaust manifolds. I don't know if kits for this are available, seems like pure fabrication work 4. simply go single turbo My current layout is as follows: Garrett 2860 -5s HKS Racing Suction intake MAF delete pipes HKS racing chamber intake piping hard intercooler piping,  ARC intercooler HKS SSQV BOV and pipe Haltech 2500 elite ECU and boost solenoid/controller HPI dump pipes OEM exhaust manifolds HKS VCAM step 1 and supporting head modifications Built 2.6 bottom end All OEM recirculation piping was removed, relevant areas sealed off I'll keep an eye out for any alternative solutions but can get started with this.  Only other question is, does shuffle harm the turbo (or anything else)? It seems like some people say your turbo shafts will explode because of the opposing forces after a while and others say they just live with it and adjust their pedal foot accordingly.
    • That worked out PERFECTLY! Thank you big time to JJ. He was able to swap me his stock diff. He drove all the way to me as well. Killer! Removal & install was pretty straightforward. The diff itself is HEAVY. So that’s a 2 man job.  Man does the car drive nice now! Couldn’t have worked out any better 👌
