hey guys,

so i am very confused at the moment weather to buy an RB25DET series 2 or an RB25DET Neo for my NA r33,

i have been working on my NA for 3 years now and its all set up for a turbo engine (yes i know wasite of money but this was my little project since ive had my P's) and since i am off my P's now, the time has finally come for a new engine!

but i am so confused between the two on which to get as ive had two offers as i can get them both for around the same place basically and both in very good condtion!

my car is a drift set up.

so what do you guys think i should put in my car?

i am also going to work the engine for about 6 months before i put it in.

So hope to hear some ideas as i do not know much about engines at all actually ! haha

just know im not a fan of what the Neo's look like :P

If you can't get a neo for cheap enough go a S2 33 engine but yeah neo. What kind of work are you going to do to the engine? I wouldn't touch it apart from bolt on, if you read the 25dyno thread it will give you some ideas.

yeah i can get the neo for basically the same price as the S2 RB, i just dont know much about them at all, i did some research and on them they sound good, but it just confuses me even more as i know nothing about engines! not sure what engine work im going to do, how come only bolt ons?

There's alot of threads around that explain what bolt on's you need, but depending on what fuel (E85 or 98RON) you're running this what what you need for 260-300kws

750-1000cc injectors

GT3076 TD06 25G T67 25G or Hypergears std manifold replacement turbos if you dont want to spend 1900$ on a 6boost with wastegate

Bosch 044 fuel pump or equivalent or bigger

Aftermarket ecu, Autronic, Vipec (is just a link G4 but more expensive) Link G4, Haltec or if you're awesome like me Microtech LT12s yewwww

Forward Facing Plenum, yes no maybe so, mostly for looks under 500hp.

3.5" exhaust

BUT

I'd consider upgrading brakes and a decent set of coilovers frist, unless once again if you're awesome like me have NA brakes :woot:

neo is hands down a better motor, everything about it is better, plus it is newer, I wouldn't ever consider a 33 one.

Only downside I will have to say for the NEO is parts will cost you more. Many things are specific to the neo motor and therefore harder/more expensive to find but they are a great motor

like what? everything from r33 is bolt on, you can even bolt the entire r33 intake onto a neo motor if you want.

Injectors are the main part that can cost a lot if you don't research. Coilpacks are different but cheap enough anyway (was a pain when people were able to source factory coilpacks for good prices for every but neos).

Actually now that I think of it that is all there is with the motor side. Other pain in the ass stuff is having a pull type clutch and different suspension struts to all other models (GTR do fit but not properly).

yeah i can get the neo for basically the same price as the S2 RB, i just dont know much about them at all, i did some research and on them they sound good, but it just confuses me even more as i know nothing about engines! not sure what engine work im going to do, how come only bolt ons?

NEO motors come std with GTR rods and N1 spec oil pump plus the solid lifters

Someone will correct me if I'm wrong though

they also have a much better flowing head, basically the same as rb26 head just with shim over bucket instead of shim under bucket which can cause issues if they spit one out, pretty unlucky for that to happen though.

Mine made an extra 20kw when going from an r33 motor to neo, 230 - 250kw with the same turbo.

go neo if you can, the neos extra 20kw comes from the turbo, 33 and neo de's are rated at same kw

the rods are stronger but the pistons are pretty equal which is what people usually break first?

solid lifters are awesome but with most of us making max power by 7k you shouldn't be revving past the hydraulic limit anyway

with both engines in good condition should produce a very similar result with same setup

I meant I made 20kw extra due to the better flowing head in the neo, my turbo was right on the limit and out of flow but by removing a restriction in the head (33 to neo) I was able to make more power, if you aren't flow maxing your turbo it won't make much difference htough.

Pistons usually break due to detonation, if you have a det free tune they will handle 400rwkw.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe 184 kw vs ~ 206 .

I can't remember what Neos get injector wise but replacing wouldn't be harder than real sidefeed alternatives . I'd like to think ID1000s would drop in but not sure there .

A .

They are pretty much a drop-in item, just need to rewire the standard connectors with the ones that come with the ID's.

Only downside I will have to say for the NEO is parts will cost you more. Many things are specific to the neo motor and therefore harder/more expensive to find but they are a great motor

This is definetly true. Still worth going for the Neo though.

Aftermarket pistons are different too and are often more expensive. There are some other different bits as well, intake side of things are slightly different so fitting other plenums / manifolds can be a bit more work.

There does seem to more and more Neo specific aftermarket stuff coming out lately though.

    • Nah that is not actually a lot. Just painting my GTR frontend and the little bits to make sideskirts/nismo flare pieces work correctly/fit on the sedan/mount up correctly came to about $7000. Is it a lot? Sure. None of this is economical. Economy would be shelling the car and buying a 2010 Corolla to commute in. The perspective of all of this is different.

    • I don't see any issues here. I've been saying all along this is a big job, the price reflects that.  When the car comes back perfect I'm sure it will feel like money well spent.

    • So, I started this repair and got as far as "fixing" the holes with some fibreglass. God all those years working on boats came back quickly. I decided I'd reach out to some rust guys just to see what they would say about it. I came across a guy about 40 mins away and went to see him. He said the windscreen needs to come out, that there might be some more bits around the windscreen and he'd quote them at the time. But his quote was $300 to remove and replace windscreen and $3k for the damage he can see. He said he could respray the roof for $1200 and the bonnet for another $800 (somebody has previously rattle canned it, its horrendous). This is $5300 + any small additional bits. It's a lot, I get that and the name of one of my fave youtube channels 'Not Economically Viable' comes to mind.  I'm not being financially rational, but I've taken him up on the quote. He's opening a new shop in November with more room, so we're waiting for that. I'll leave the currently missing headliner out until then. I'm looking forward to it being fixed and having the paint looking nice again (lots of clear coat issues on the roof too). / flame suit on.
