Hi all, As everybody knows R33 GTS-4 sedan never came out with a turbo version. I may be interested in transplanting a RB25DET into series 2 R33 GTS-4 manual sedan. i think this setup will be very practical for a daily driver. sort of best of both worlds.

Could someone please fix any steps that's incorrect or missing.

- RB25DET manual engine from STAGEA AWD

- Stagea engine sump?

- Stagea gearbox?

- Stagea ECU? or does it needs after-market ECU for tuning?

If it is manual , just buy the engine , diff ratio will be your issue . Rb26 would be nicer , unless you were thinking neo 25?

Forgot to mention , use the ecu with the engine you buy , the auto ecu works fine with manual if you buy an auto half cut. Gearbox are all the same , your fly wheel and clutch will bolt straight up if you need it to , your main issue will be wiring , there are a few threads on this site about what you will need to do with that though

toffy thanks for the reply. yeah rb26 would be desirable but it's expensive to maintain whereas rb25 is cheap. yeah most likely i will buy a manual stagea half cut. diff ratio is an issue.

just wondering though would it be easier and cheaper to convert the DE engine and making it a DET instead of doing a drivetrain conversion?

My experience is that Nissan gearboxes are generally over-engineered. I have a Stagea RB25DET in my 32 GTS4 - no problems with the box wanting to fail, even with 180AwkW pushing through it.

It is easy enough to swap the front diff from your current engine into the Stagea housing.

Manual Stagea engines are rare - an auto can easily be "manualised" with a flywheel, clutch and spigot bearing.

if you want to do this for money wise, these are your options:

buy a stagea series 1 turbo engine (lots of spare parts and millions of add ons) also the engines are cheap as nuggets

then if you are going for a manual conversion, buy a r32 gtr box, cheap to come by and uses the push type clutch, HEAAAAAPS cheaper to buy a clutch for.

depending on what condition the gearbox is in, it should hold the odd 400kw quite easily.

that is the cheapest option.

better option plus, using slight less petrol:

stagea series 2 NEO engine ( slightly more expensive, and less tuning parts to go by, internally tuning that is) but it is a newer engine.

and mate that with a r32gtr push type box

To be honest, i'm looking for a semi-budget build for daily driver. i won't be getting massive power nor going to tracks. i will be doing much of the work myself in the backyard so labour cost will be saved.

Question, would it be easier/cheaper for me to do a DE+T conversion? that way i don't have to worry about DIFF ratio/gearbox related issues.

Agree with going the NEO route - my old R32 GTS-4 had a Stagea Series 1 driveline, and it was a pain in the butt to find things for. Was going to put a GT-R box in in teh end, you can usually find them a lot cheaper than GTS-T boxes, the weight and size is a factor though.

    • Reading through the engine service manual their advice is do a cylinder balance test. Unplug one injector at a time and see if the idle drops a consistent RPM. You can also do this using a Consult cable which is easier. They also call for unplugging the power transistor, then with the engine off and the fuel rail unhooked from the manifold verifying that you have good fuel flow (even injection, no dripping/leaks, etc) when you twist the CAS by hand. Also verify the spark by pulling the spark plugs and allowing the plugs to ground and turning the CAS by hand. I would also start doing the sensor checks and idle valve checks in service manual. Make sure the MAF tests reasonably, the intake air regulator is sane, etc. You may have to get new spark plugs.
    • This sounds very old of me, however since buying the Tiguan shit box, my view on shit boxes have changed.
    • I've looked up the parts number (41011AL501). It's around $700 OEM. Usually our Infiniti G35 here in Canada have interchangeable parts with my Stagea but the parts number are not the same. I have looked around and it seems the JDM 2005 V35 Skyline (which is the same as our G35) has the same caliper but I cannot confirm. And I can't find a repair kit. The inner brake pads drags on the rotor, seems to be rusty piston. Thanks for the info by the way
    • This coupled with 6-9 speed autos with ridiculously short gearing is why these modern shitbox cars always seem so fast off the line. If it wasn't for those things, Raptors would not seem fast. The problem we have is there is a driveability gap between a more gentle take off and a wheelspinning sideways launch. The difference between ankle flex required to achieve one and ankle flex required to achieve the other is about 0.5°.
    • Yeah I think I'm also with the opposite here. It's 'hard to keep up with traffic' because in the real world I'm accelerating with 15% throttle and they are pinning it. It feels like I'm being an overt dickhead at anything above 15% throttle, so the car sounds like I'm being an overt dickhead to keep up with/get ahead of traffic when I'm really just trying to drive with traffic. There would be no issue 'keeping up with traffic' if we used the same level of throttle input/aggression to drive around. People really do just drive around with their foot nearly pinned in econoboxes.
