hey guys i thought i would share my story with you all, therefore am starting a build thread

A little bit of background of the car, ive owned the car for only 3 months, this used to be my friends car for over 7 years so i know everything thats been done and how its been driven.

he has originally build the engine, well at least he thought he had but he got a bit shafted, both of us found this out when the engine failed and i pulled the engine apart.

car mods are

rb30

25 neo head

mild cams not sure on the specs exactly but the way it idles it would be somewhere with the 250-260 duration with a lift of 8.9 (which ive calculated)

NO VCT used

GARRETT gt3788r turbo

3inch exhaust with twin mufflers,

turbosmart hyper gate 45

Haltech plug in platinum pro

PE 850cc injectors

nismo adj fuel pressure reg

walbro intank pump with 044 external + surge tank

greddy copy intake manifold ported and machined for perfect fit

trust intercooler

ill upload a few photos and keep you all updated of the future build that am going to do over some period of time

Ive made 320rwkw before the engine let go :( but you dont expect stock pistons to last much at that much power

This is where it all started when i bought the car of a mate,

this is how he had it set up

the red inlet manifold and plenum with standard throttle body is now for sale, asking 150 and pick up from syd liverpool

So ive decided to buy a copy greddy inlet manifold and a surge tank with bosch 044 of another friend,

ive painted the rocker covers in wrinckle black and turbo in matt black

also added a oil catch can

after fitting it all and runing in a small problem with the copy manifold and vct line which wasnt used, we managed to grind off a bit and still retain the vct aftermarket line, in case i decide to run the vct. :)

here what it ended up looking like :)

to me much nicer :P well am a sucker for black lol

Probably should chuck this up in the builds section. Lots more people who are building similar things hang out there and can give great tips.

Love the look of a tough high mount

Good numbers as well

oh shit i just realised its in the wrong thread

not the biggest computer person is there a way of just transferring it to build ups or just start another new topic with copy paste thing

With any luck a mod might move it for you

so one day i noticed that my car had a different cranking sound i let it go for a week or so didnt think of it much at that time, i honesly thought the starter was on the way out, but when i noticed that my oil catch can was half filled with oil i realised that something was not right, it was either excessive blow by engine not breathing properly so i went and checked that it was breathing properly. it all checked up alrite i went to check the compression it was dead even in first 4 cylinders of 180psi of pressure i thought to myself oh ok the engine is good but when i went to check it on 5th it only had 65psi of pressure, ohhhh shittt. the hunt then started for the failed cylinder 5 :(

started pulling things appart

If anyones wondering y am doing everything on the car is that i didnt have an engine crane at the time, i sold my old one ages ago thinking ill never need it again and here i am lol. ive ordered one but had arrived a bit too late.

so the next thing to do was to take the head off to see any physical damage that could be seen in a cylinder bore, head or piston.

when i took the head off i didnt see much at all except a bit of oil in the troubled cylinder

im guessing your expecting to find it wasnt built after all?

hope it turns out to be a monster tho :D that turbo should be huffing over 400kw with ease

after pulling the head off first thing i saw was the piston design and it made me wonder the same thing, at the end it wasnt built well it was but with standard items

well since i still didnt get my crane i had to do it the hard way, i just shouldve gone to another shop that had one in stock but oh well :(

yep thats right take the piston out and see what the drama is.

when i took the piston out i could clearly see a couple of things, first the ringland of the piston has cracked/broken and the second they are stock rb30 pistons hmmmmmmm

sniff sniff you smell that?

Bullcrap

heres a few photos :)

ohh yeah

post-46081-0-22851800-1340010626_thumb.jpg

am sure many of you can confirm that these pistons are standard

genuine rod you cant really tell if its been shot pined or not :(

post-46081-0-20604300-1340010677_thumb.jpg

the only thing that has been changed was the rod bearings, ARP rod bolts and arp head studs

maybe the engine was freshend up with the ACL rb30 kit which u can pick up for around $800,

I measured the cylinder bore and it was standard :(

ive been told today that it was definatelly forged, the workshop that my friend got it off got it off of another guy whos originally built it, if this makes sence so basically workshop has bought this block of the X guy and then sold it to my friend thinking that it was properly build but anyways am starting to confuse myself :/

ARP rod bolts (good stuff) :)

rod bearing

cylinder bore

post-46081-0-44477700-1340011413_thumb.jpg

it measured exactly 86.00 the first time i measured it indicatind it definately hasnt been honed :(

post-46081-0-60643800-1340011426_thumb.jpg

And final update for today is that ive ordered a forged rebuilt kit from spool imports

post-46081-0-36786100-1340012313_thumb.jpg

this kit is with the h beam rods but i upgraded and went with the I beams in case i decide to go over 450rwkw

cant wait until i start building :)

Also the workshop that had sold my friend the engine (my engine now) said to send him the block back and he shall put forged pistons and hone the bore, event hough he said hes gonna do all that i still went and bought this kit, so after everything is done i might have a set of spare pistons and rods :)

    • It would be well worth deciding where you want to go and what you care about. Reliability of everything in a 34 drops MASSIVELY above the 300kw mark. Keeping everything going great at beyond that value will cost ten times the $. Clutches become shit, gearboxes (and engines/bottom ends) become consumable, traction becomes crap. The good news is looking legalish/actually being legal is slighly under the 300kw mark. I would make the assumption you want to ditch the stock plenum too and want to go a front facing unit of some description due to the cross flow. Do the bends on a return flow hurt? Not really. A couple of bends do make a difference but not nearly as much in a forced induction situation. Add 1psi of boost to overcome it. Nobody has ever gone and done a track session monitoring IAT then done a different session on a different intercooler and monitored IAT to see the difference here. All of the benefits here are likely in the "My engine is a forged consumable that I drive once a year because it needs a rebuild every year which takes 9 months of the year to complete" territory. It would be well worth deciding where you want to go and what you care about with this car.
    • By "reverse flow", do you mean "return flow"? Being the IC having a return pipe back behind the bumper reo, or similar? If so... I am currently making ~250 rwkW on a Neo at ~17-18 psi. With a return flow. There's nothing to indicate that it is costing me a lot of power at this level, and I would be surprised if I could not push it harder. True, I have not measured pressure drop across it or IAT changes, but the car does not seem upset about it in any way. I won't be bothering to look into it unless it starts giving trouble or doesn't respond to boost increases when I next put it on the dyno. FWIW, it was tuned with the boost controller off, so achieving ~15-16 psi on the wastegate spring alone, and it is noticeably quicker with the boost controller on and yielding a couple of extra pounds. Hence why I think it is doing OK. So, no, I would not arbitrarily say that return flows are restrictive. Yes, they are certainly restrictive if you're aiming for higher power levels. But I also think that the happy place for a street car is <300 rwkW anyway, so I'm not going to be aiming for power levels that would require me to change the inlet pipework. My car looks very stock, even though everything is different. The turbo and inlet pipes all look stock and run in the stock locations, The airbox looks stock (apart from the inlet being opened up). The turbo looks stock, because it's in the stock location, is the stock housings and can't really be seen anyway. It makes enough power to be good to drive, but won't raise eyebrows if I ever f**k up enough for the cops to lift the bonnet.
    • There is a guy who said he can weld me piping without having to cut chassis, maybe I do that ? Or do I just go reverse flow but isn’t reverse flow very limited once again?
    • I haven’t yet cut the chassis, maybe I switch to a reverse flow. I’ve got the Intercooler mounted as I already had it but not cut yet. Might have to speak to an engineer
    • Yes that’s another issue, I always have a front mount, plus will be turbo plus intake will big hasstle. I’ve been told if it looks stock they’re fine with it by a couple others who have done it ahahaha.    I know @Kinkstaah said the stock gtt airbox is limiting but I might just have to do that to avoid a defect so it atleast looks legit. Or an enclosed pod so it’s hidden away and feed air from the snorkel and below Intercooler holes like kinstaah mentioned. Hmm what to do
