Been struggling with this issue for years,Its been going on too long an i need my car fixed, I dont have alot of money for dyno but will be taking it to one soon.

Car history:

Got it directly from japan ,stock as a rock series 2 with 60,000kms, Engine ran great and it was super fast.

I put a Blitz Intercooler and Full 3" free exhaust and big dump pipe, turbosmart bov valve(both atmos and re plumb adustable)

these mods gave me 12 psi on its own without even touching boost controllers(i dont have one)on my crappy guage and i cannot make the boost lower as actuator is directly plumbed into intercooler intake pipe. I have disconnected the standard boost solaniod

as ive been tring to get boost lower.

I wish i could make less boost!

Then the problems started, the car could not take anything more than 2/3 throttle on boost or it would break down, lag and start pig rooting with power on /power off.

I then had a dyno look at the car, we replaced fuel pump with walbro and it was much better but problem was stiff there just less.(he claimed the car was seeing only 9 psi and car ran [email protected]

I then started playing around with timing, more advance gave less symptoms which confussed me more.

Ive played around with the actuator ,making sure its free but maybe the actuator spring setting is too high?maybe i should get a r32 10 psi actuator?

Ive plaed with coil packs, epoxied them and taped them up, ive lower plug gap to .6 as that and timimg was helping.

Am i hitting boost cut? the power on and off is fairly violent and only happens on load at more than 2/3 throttle. If i back off the car picks up again.

I have a fuel cut defender but have not installed.

Someone else said my exhaust is too free and i need a 2 1/4 restrictor plate in the exhaust to lower the boost?

how can i lower my boost?

Im still learning with computer forced induction and i will be saving for a new ecu, i just need my car to be running ok till then even if its less boost.

I am willing to pay someone with experience in adelaide to look at my car, need it fixed.

heres a list that id check/look over

1) replace that blow off valve with the stock- leaks will make it on/off

2)check the actuator hose is not cracked and plumb it back to the before intercooler ( normal ) position

3)if its a bellmouth dump its ok, if its a split one then its probably jamming the flapper

4)the turbo could be a highflow that has a small flapper that cant handle the flow

5)12psi would be near RandR and also the coilpacks could be not handling the extra boost.

6) check its a standard turbo, if not it could be surging and giving the on/off

7) inspect the actuator condition, is it damaged, not on properly.

8) was the fuel tank clean when they replaced the pump?

thanks

I think the actuator is in the normal position(nipple) after intercooler and before throttlebody .

I will check others but more suggestions please.

Is 12 psi normal for only intercooler + full exhaust mod?

Remember dyno tuner claimed psi was 9.2?

Would restricting the exhaust lower the boost?

Edited by cosworth1971

the normal position for the nipple is not after the intercooler, it is actually right on the side of the turbo

where is the boost controller getting its reading?

the boost reading could be different in those two places, most likely higher at the turbo so it may be boosting upto 14psi

ok thanks again ,will check that..

Interestingly i just went for a drive but put a silencer in the end of my exhaust that came with my blitz exhaust, boosted till 10 psi and held rather solid there, no lag or issues.

I think im suffering from boost creep from the free exhaust? before it went to 10 but creeped up to 12psi near the end of the rev range.

12psi from those mods

No.

Someone else said my exhaust is too free and i need a 2 1/4 restrictor plate in the exhaust to lower the boost?

DAFUQ? don't do it, you're going a few steps backwards

Try tapping the pressure source pre intercooler, i.e. hot side NOT cold side.

ok thanks again ,will check that..

I do not believe so, I've had a 3x RB motors and none of them did any of the above you've mentioned.

My current stock shitbox has a 3.75" down pipe, and pretty much crap all restriction to the rear. It sees no more than 8psi.

Your coilpacks are rooted.

Replace them along with the plugs and I bet your issues go away.

Not always, I bought Spitfires and new plugs and my problems stayed on the stock ECU. When I got a Power FC and everything tuned it came good.

This was all at around 10psi, R33's are hell sensitive about it

OP: Perhaps you already have an R32 actuator on the turbo or as someone said its a highflow/different turbo to stock

If you wanted to change the actuator I'd find an R33 one, Post up a photo of the turbo/actuator and someone can probably tell you what your dealing with

But as people have said, run the boost source for your actuator/boost controller from close to the outlet from the turbo. Stock position is on the pipe that comes out of there, I drilled and tapped mine into the elbow off the top of the turbo when I got new cooler pipes

I had 3" exhaust, intercooler, Pod filter etc on mine when I was still running stock ECU and I was still able to run 7 psi (Dont remember if I could go down to 5psi off the actuator because I dont think I ever took it that low with all the mods, Think It did go that low but)

where are you reading the boost from and where did the tuner get the boost from? when i had my r33 with stock computer it went all the way upto 16psi a few times without any sort of a boost cut, was more like a flatlining rather than a violent cut, but alot of others seem to have issues at 10-12psi,

was it cutting out on the dyno ?

    • I couldn't agree more. I should have started from the get-go with a NEO or solid bucket conversion. I started looking into converting over to solid lifters yesterday. Now for some reason I was always under the impression that when using the Tomei solid lifter conversion, you would also require new valves (Longer or shorter stems, I can't remember which).  But I see no mention of this on any of the Tomei documentation. It just states I need the Tomei solid buckets, solid lifter cams and upgraded springs. As my head is already built, all I would need is another set of 1000$ Kelford cams, 500$ buckets and about 4H hours of my time installing and I'm off to the races!?!? There's no way it's that simple, I must me missing something?
    • BRUH, one of the biggest mistakes of my life..... and i've had plenty ;[)
    • @Murray_Calavera iam just considering options 🙂 of course it is very expensive so that why i ask here 🙂  @joshuaho96 I looked at that GCG hybrid(i remember looking at it few weeks before) So this is "that" hybrid where i send them my turbo and they upgrade the inside to Garrett stuff and then they send it back. It cost around 1200-1300 USD which is FAR cheaper than the HKS and it is what iam looking for(i just do not have experience like this...to send something off to "upgrade" ) @tylink720 that is like 150 USD turbo no? 😄 I dont think i have the "ease on my mind" with this kind of turbo. I just put over 7000k USD to "LINK" up my engine...dont want to blow it up with cheap turbo 😄     EDIT: https://www.cj-motor.com/gcg-turbo-charger-for-nissan-rb20det-rb25det-high?srsltid=AfmBOooVeOZ6CZ6r1AIv5m-KPaa6BvudIPJTY8LW78khkd-gQlsaCht9 I looked at this and it seems ok? It is that CGC hybrid and it costs around 1250 USD (with back shipping). Do any of you have experience with this hybrid on NEO turbo? I quickly look thru the forum/web and it seems very good.
