Is It Just Me Or Have Insurance Premiums Skyrocketed?

Recommended Posts

Serious.jpg?

My commodore is cheap as through Shannon's

Could prob get a better deal elsewhere too, but I like shannons

Don't forget it isnt just the value of a car it's the cost of replacement parts

What's a windscreen for an r34 worth? Or a front guard or bumper? Compared to a new hsv?

So IMO if you expect your imported, hard to get parts for high risk car to be cheap to insure than you have another thing coming

But it does seem to be limited to skylines though, the soarer and supra were much cheaper than the r33.

Because when was the last time you saw a soarer on the news for crashing though a house after street racing

Yep - brand new driver's window for a VT commodore would be a couple hundred from O'Briens - same window for my R33 was $1800 from Nissan. $1800!!!!!! Thank gawd I didn't have to pay for it.

And THAT is why insurance premiums are high for imports. Replacing busted with new parts costs a BOMB.

nah, its more cause Australian companies are crooks and monopolise industries and the gov lets it happen

I bet the majority of them are underwritten by the same big 4-5 global co's anyway.

Shannons & Just Cars are now under Suncorp for instance

Might be worth ringing up and getting a quote from Lumley SV. I got a quote from Just Car, and Lumleys was almost half of what Just Car was

insert disclaimer here about different circumstances etc

Suncorp own AAMI as well ;)

Yes they also own, Apia, Just Car Insurance, Shannons, InsureMyRide, Vero, Terri Scheer, Bingle, CIL, Asteron and Tyndall insurance brands in Australia, and Vero, Asteron, Guardian Trust, Tyndall, Vero Marine, Vero Liability, AA Insurance, SIS, CMV/AXIOM, Mariner, Comprehensive Travel Insurance and Autosure brands in New Zealand

Id say there doing quite well with there foot in the insurance industry :)

I know through Asteron alone our company puts in about $200k of premuims per year. Which is stuff all.

Ash's right.

Suncorp owns AAMI, Just Car, Shannon's, Aust Alliance & Aust Pensioners' Insurance.

Wesfarmers owns Lumleys SV, Bunnings, Coles, Target

Edit* I just saw sydking's post :)

The higher up the food chain in a lot of larer business you go, you'll find the same groups on many of the varying subsidiaries in various industry - some even compete against each other! but end of the day profits end up in the one place.

It's very interesting if you wanted to look into it.

Wesfarmers is another big one to dig around and find they have thier fingers in MANY pies as Terry said :)

Owned in most cases :)

Kinda not really on topic anymore though lol. Underwritten is another point entirely as well haha.

doesnt matter what these guys pay. unless they live at same address, same driving history, same car, value, usage, claims history, multi vehicle discounts, other discounts, garaging etc etc blah blah if the price wasnt the same id ask around, however as everyone is different, everyones premium will be different. plus its a GTR. if you had a pre 80s classic with Shannons then you'd be laughing, but an import/GTR in western Sydney - bend over!!

+2

Differences in premiums due to different geographical locations is one thing, but a near-doubling of premiums in the space of a couple of years is another. I'm thinking that the reduced prices of imports means more hoons can afford them, write them off and subsequently make an insurance claim? That's probably behind the increased premiums. Anyway it just seemed odd that premiums had gone up a considerable amount since I last had a GTR.

Mate everything goes up, if you want the car it's just something you have to take into consideration.

Why don't you move to a better area?

Maybe you should take a look at the loss ratio on the cars.. :)

They are owned by Suncorp, not underwritten..

Suncorp own AAMI as well ;)
Really? Wasn't Just Car under AAMI before??

Just Cars is still underwritten by AAMI..

    • I thought that might be the case, thats what I'll start saving for. Thanks for the info
    • Ps i found the below forum and it seems to be the same scenario Im dealing with. Going to check my ECU coolant temp wire tomorrow    From NICOclub forum: s1 RB25det flooding at start up Thu Apr 11, 2013 7:23 am I am completely lost on this. Car ran perfectly fine when I parked it at the end of the year. I took the engine out and painted the engine bay, and put a fuel cell with an inline walbro 255 instead of the in tank unit I had last year. After reinstalling everything, the engine floods when the fuel pump primes. if i pull the fuel pump fuse it'll start, and as soon as I put the fuse back in it starts running ridiculously rich. I checked the tps voltage, and its fine. Cleaned the maf as it had some dust from sitting on a shelf all winter, fuel pressure is correct while running, but wont fire until there is less than 5psi in the lines. The fuel lines are run correctly. I have found a few threads with the same problem but no actual explanation of what fixed it, the threads just ended. Any help would be appreciated. I found the problem though. There was a break in one of the ecu coolant temp sensor wires. Once it was repaired it fired right up with no problems. I would have never thought a non working coolant temp sensor would have caused such an issue.
    • Hi sorry late reply I didnt get a chance to take any pics (my mechanics on the other side of the city) but the plugs were fouled from being too rich. I noticed the MAF wasn't genuine, so I replaced it with a genuine green label unit. I also swapped in a different ignitor, but the issue remains. I've narrowed it down a bit now: - If I unplug and reconnect the fuel lines and install fresh spark plugs, the car starts right up and runs perfectly. Took it around the block with no issues - As soon as I shut it off and try to restart, it won't start again - Fuel pressure while cranking is steady around 40 psi, injectors have good spray, return line is clear, and the FPR vacuum is working. It just seems like it's getting flooded after the first start I unplugged coolant sensors to see if its related to ECU flooding but that didnt make a difference. Im thinking its related to this because this issue only started happening after fixing coolant leaks and replacing the bottom part of the stock manifolds coolant pipe. My mechanic took off the inlet to get to get to do these repairs. My mechanics actually just an old mate who's retired now so ill be taking it to a different mechanic who i know has exp with RBs to see if they find anything. If you have any ideas please send em lll give it a try. Ive tried other things like swapping the injectors, fuel rail, different fuel pressure regs, different ignitor, spark plugs, comp test and MAF but the same issue persists.
