hey guys just a quick question and its probably been asked a thousand times but im in a hurry as i have to take it to the mechanics tomorrow...

im replacing my 33 gtst's rotors to slotted ones and the front brake pads need changing..., im going to change all 4 brake pads at the same time? read somewhere on forums that it might be a bad idea to change both the pads and rotors at the same time? is there any truth to this...

What is the best brake fluid to buy before i go and get my brakes done so i can get that replaced too?

I read on the braking forum that Bendex Ultimates might be the best to go for brakes can anyone recommend a good place locally to go to get these at a decent price for all 4 brake pads?.....

Edit : i got quoted 350$ for a pair of EBC redstuff....does this sound about right for just a pair? am i better off going bendex?

$350 seems a bit excessive for just the front brake pads. I got a brand called 'remsa' and they're a really good all round pad. I forgot exactly what I paid for them but it was well below $200 for the front pair. I purchased them from gslrallysport (they're an sau trader) Also depends what the car is for. is it street or track? bendix ultimates are dusty as shit and personally I'd steer clear of them just based on that. I have used them before and performance wise they're ok but not great. There shouldn't be a problem replacing all rotors and brake pads at the same time. As long as you bed the pads in properly. As for brake fluid I just use castrol super dot 4 and haven't had any problems with it.

hey, its going to be a street car and hopefully in the future a few track runs....

yeah i wasnt sure about the EBC being that high so i thought id throw it out there to see what people think, if they were good pads i wouldnt mind paying it....

For brake pads I would go QFM A1RM's (also supplied by gslrallysport), that's what we had on our R32 and they were great, they saw a couple of track days and after switching to these combined with Motul RBF600 brake fluid it made a very noticeable difference on the track. However, I haven't used them over a long period of time so I can't tell you how they wear or if they produce much brake dust.

Pads were somewhere about $150 from memory and brake fluid about $35 a bottle (this is probably overkill for a mainly street driven car though).

I have also heard that the Remsa pads are good.

qfm is a queenland company and i don't think any one have in stock in tas,the ultimate pads are a great daily drive pad with the occasional spirited drive.

the greens tuff pads are a great option on a street car because they have good cold brake feel and don't need ashit load of stops to work well like redtuff pads,I ran slotted standard disks and greentuff pads on my 32gtr and was able to get 4 laps aroud symons plains [62/63 sec laps] so not mucking around.

this combo had great cold feel and great hot feel,i consider to be a good alround combo, but i am sure every one has there own idea's.

the greentuff pads are available in hobart at petroject.i think

stuart

you probably won't get any in that time but they are well worth it

lowish dust, good bite, low rotor wear, quiet

get them from http://gslrallysport.com/shop/

if you buy 2 sets (2 fronts or front and rear etc) you get free postage

I run them in the front of my stagea and they are awesome, i don't drive it often and when i do its amazing :)

use old pads to bed in new rotors (know to sometimes stuff the pads)

then whack new pads in and bed those in on newish rotor

win win

also, changing rotors is like 10x's harder than changing pads as the pads can be changed with the caliper still in place

If it's just a spiritedly driven Daily, Green stuff will be OK, as soon as you get them on the track for more than 2 laps, they WILL melt. Not even joking. Mine caught fire after a couple of laps.

If you're going to track it, I'd say Red stuff will be OK and better for dust. But the QFM A1RM's will perform better but you'll get a little dust.

If you're serious about the track, get Hawk DTC60, I got them in mine, friggin changed my life. OMG the difference was incredible, max braking G's went from 1.8 to 2.3. It actually hurts my face. Did like 10 laps and they didn't fade at all. AND they work Cold and even better hot so it suits me perfectly with my Drift and Time attack mix. Only down side to the Hawks is the price and the dust... oh the dust.

Bendix Ultimate, might as well put blocks of wood in there, had them on my VL and they were very average performance, over heated quickly and caught fire really easy, never again.

Brake fluid I just use the Castrol stuff that the dude in the shop told me to get. Always use a sealed new container for every time as condensation gets in the fluid and wrecks it. Haven't had a problem with it, I do change it often though.

There is nothing wrong with doing all the brakes at the same time, make sure you pump the pedal before leaving the workshop though, or you'll get to the end of the driveway and can't stop!!

Thats my 2c, if you're in Hobart and need a hand changing pads\rotors I'd be happy to help out :)

yeah if i was too do track days id be considering Redstuff rather than green, just purely because the car wont see a track until it has been fully modded but for the moment im going to try and keep her stock standard apart from the usual bolt on upgrades until i know the car a bit more then ill consider larger power, next move is the suspension i reckon

    • As discussed in the previous post, the bushes in the 110 needed replacing. I took this opportunity to replace the castor bushes, the front lower control arm, lower the car and get the alignment dialled in with new tyres. I took it down to Alignment Motorsports on the GC to get this work done and also get more out of the Shockworks as I felt like I wasn't getting the full use out of them.  To cut a very long story short, it ended up being the case the passenger side castor arm wouldn't accept the brand new bush as the sleeve had worn badly enough to the point you could push the new bush in by hand and completely through. Trying a pair of TRD bushes didn't fix the issue either (I had originally gone with Hardrace bushes). We needed to urgently source another castor arm, and thankfully this was sourced and the guys at the shop worked on my car until 7pm on a Saturday to get everything done. The car rides a lot nicer now with the suspension dialled in properly. Lowered the car a little as well to suit the lower profile front tyres, and just bring the car down generally. Eternally thankful for the guys down at the shop to get the car sorted, we both pulled big favours from our contacts to get it done on the Saturday.  Also plugged in the new Stedi foglights into the S15, and even from a quick test in the garage I'm keen to see how they look out on the road. I had some concerns about the length of the LED body and whether it'd fit in the foglight housing but it's fine.  I've got a small window coming up next month where I'll likely get a little paint work done on the 110 to remove the rear wing, add a boot wing and roof wing, get the side skirt fixed up and colour match the little panel on the tail lights so that I can install some badges that I've kept in storage. I'm also tempted to put in a new pair of headlights on the 110.  Until then, here's some more pictures from Easter this year.
    • I would put a fuel pressure gauge between the filter and the fuel rail, see if it's maintaining good fuel pressure at idle going up to the point when it stalls. Do you see any strange behavior in commanded fuel leading up to the point when it stalls? You might have to start going through the service manual and doing a long list of sensor tests if it's not the fuel system for whatever reason.
    • Hi,  Just joined the forum so I could share my "fix" of this problem. Might be of use to someone. Had the same hunting at idle issue on my V36 with VQ35HR engine after swapping the engine because the original one got overheated.  While changing the engine I made the mistake of cleaning the throttle bodies and tried all the tricks i could find to do a throttle relearn with no luck. Gave in and took it to a shop and they couldn't sort it. Then took it to my local Nissan dealership and they couldn't get it to idle properly. They said I'd need to replace the throttle bodies and the ecu probably costing more than the car is worth. So I had the idea of replacing the carbon I cleaned out with a thin layer of super glue and it's back to normal idle now. Bit rough but saved the car from the wreckers 🤣
    • After my last update, I went ahead with cleaning and restoring the entire fuel system. This included removing the tank and cleaning it with the Beyond Balistics solution, power washing it multiple times, drying it thoroughly, rinsing with IPA, drying again with heat gun and compressed air. Also, cleaning out the lines, fuel rail, and replacing the fuel pump with an OEM-style one. During the cleaning process, I replaced several hoses - including the breather hose on the fuel tank, which turned out to be the cause of the earlier fuel leak. This is what the old fuel filter looked like: Fuel tank before cleaning: Dirty Fuel Tank.mp4   Fuel tank after cleaning (some staining remains): Clean Fuel Tank.mp4 Both the OEM 270cc and new DeatschWerks 550cc injectors were cleaned professionally by a shop. Before reassembling everything, I tested the fuel flow by running the pump output into a container at the fuel filter location - flow looked good. I then fitted the new fuel filter and reassembled the rest of the system. Fuel Flow Test.mp4 Test 1 - 550cc injectors Ran the new fuel pump with its supplied diagonal strainer (different from OEM’s flat strainer) and my 550cc injectors using the same resized-injector map I had successfully used before. At first, it idled roughly and stalled when I applied throttle. Checked the spark plugs and found that they were fouled with carbon (likely from the earlier overly rich running when the injectors were clogged). After cleaning the plugs, the car started fine. However, it would only idle for 30–60 seconds before stalling, and while driving it would feel like a “fuel cut” after a few seconds - though it wouldn’t fully stall. Test 2 – Strainer swap Suspecting the diagonal strainer might not be reaching the tank bottom, I swapped it for the original flat strainer and filled the tank with ~45L of fuel. The issue persisted exactly the same. Test 3 – OEM injectors To eliminate tuning variables, I reinstalled the OEM 270cc injectors and reverted to the original map. Cleaned the spark plugs again just in-case. The stalling and “fuel cut” still remained.   At this stage, I suspect an intermittent power or connection fault at the fuel pump hanger, caused during the cleaning process. This has led me to look into getting Frenchy’s fuel hanger and replacing the unit entirely. TL;DR: Cleaned and restored the fuel system (tank, lines, rail, pump). Tested 550cc injectors with the same resized-injector map as before, but the car stalls at idle and experiences what feels like “fuel cut” after a few seconds of driving. Swapped back to OEM injectors with original map to rule out tuning, but the issue persists. Now suspecting an intermittent power or connection fault at the fuel pump hanger, possibly cause by the cleaning process.
