Redline kills syncros

Well, that's certainly conlusive proof.

Humble pie currently being heated ready for eating...

Read and taken under advisement. That's one negative experience against quite a number of positive ones. I think my point is still valid tho. If the synchros are screwed and it requires a rebuild, what's the harm with throwing some Redline in? I'll do some research and see what I come up with.

There's really no risk at all if they're already damaged; in fact anecdotal evidence suggests that when people who have synchro issues use Redline, they seem to have far less serious or completely eliminate the issue.

But I can't provide ironclad evidence to support this. The only downside is the cost, which may or may not solve the problem.

Redline lightweight shockproof screws synchros eh...really?

I must be driving a miracle R33 for >200,000km

Better get a lottery ticket eh? ;)

I like you Daleo haha. We're on the same page. $120 or whatever for a bottle of oil is cheaper than a rebuild. If it fixes it, yay for me, if not, I've spent more on less haha.

From what I've been reading my issue is commonly solved by just putting in redline. So I think that's what I'll do.

When I was working at VW we had a recall on golfs/caddys with a 5 speed manual that under quickish shifting was crunching in to 2nd and sometimes 3rd. The official "fix" was drain the synthetic oil out and run a flush through twice and drain and fill with a mineral non synth oil. Apparently the synthetic had such a good friction modifier that the syncros weren't slowing down enough to shift smoothly unless you were taking forever to shift.

Nulon and liquimoly do some gearbox additives that they say they reduce wear, quieter changes etc?

It was interesting to read about Redline. Only place I use it is on their panel filter. All my Nissans run on Nulon with their addatives. With absolutely no probs. But then our cars are only dailys or workaholics. Our latest buy, an R32/RB20DET will be Nuloned this weekend.

    • Why are you so adamant on going M12? Why not follow Brad (GTSBoy) suggestion. You're talking moving from a 1/8" size, to a 1/2" effectively. 4 times bigger. Why skip the commonly available sizes in between? The bigger you go, the more likely you are to strip the threads out at a later date, as guaranteed, someone will put a huge spanner on the M12 and really tighten it up, and you're only in thin wall, so not a lot of threads to engage!
    • Hi. Yeah thanks. Car is already at tuners and it staying there to resolve "many" issues they do not like. So it is in a good hands. Getting a good tune on that Nistune ECU too so the car would be good. Just needs a little tune up and love.
    • Probably gonna remove manifold and turbo. I’m not sure if I can get M12 x 1.5 air tight. Could use high temp Loctite 246 or something similar, but I don’t know. Maybe it’s just best to remove everything again and weld an 1/8NPT on there instead.
    • Yeah, saw the ratios, not impressed. Would like the punch I have in the first gears now. With those ratios it won't be the same.  Also want the h pattern gearing, or at least a quiet gear set that don't need to come apart for service each year. Looks like the only "reasonable" way Is a 8hp70 transmission, but where is the fun in that🤷‍♂️
