Just turn it off - I do. With my rather noisy exhaust I don't like to annoy my neighbours anyway by booting it up the street. At the track just do a cool down lap open the bonnet to check all is well and then turn it off.

Personally I would only use a turbo timer on cars fitted with either a oil-cooled only turbo (70s/80s turbos generally weren't water cooled) or a journal bearing turbo (especially a ceramic turbo) as they have afair amount of oil sitting inside them at any time so more likely to 'choke' the oil vs a ball bearing turbo which uses restrictors (they literally really only needs drops of oil)

Well if idling is so bad for the car why is it advised by the owners manual and so many people who drive turbos and almost any guide i've ever read about the basics of owning a turbo car?

My R34 is running stock turbo, pretty sure it's a ceramic and from what i've read is they are supposed to have idling times.

I was also explained by someone, although i don't confirm that this is factual knowledge, that when you just turn the engine off something about cold air rushing into the turbo and coming into contact with the ceramic and causing a damaging crack effect, such as extreme heat and cold do when they come in contact.

Probably cos its better to recommend to idle down to everyone for those who flog the car before turning it off. Otherwise could be warranty issues for those who did the wrong thing and usually complain the loudest.

Saying to idle down if its been driven hard could be viewed differently depending on your view of hard.

Turbine blades go from 0 to instant heat on startup, they cool down much slower than they heat up. Cold air can't just rush in

To answer your original question the cheapest HKS turbo timer is around AU$100 so its definitely a cheap knock - off.

I threw out the turbo timer that was in my original Stagea with stock turbo and the turbo was still fine when I later upgraded and sold it...no sign of cold air damage!

    • I am well aware as I did rant at him to buy a MX5, buy the 2.5 before he DIY'ed it, etc as well as do things to the holden. He will obtain a ND. It's the best of both worlds. They look great in person, definitely the best looking one. Just a matter of time now.

    • ouch! how is the car now?I had sold my gtr but have been looking into some on trademe and a 260RS but I wouldnt be keen on any repairs needed on them
    • This sounds like someone who would have owned an R33 in their past... It's okay, I'm 100% picking up what you're putting down Mark.
    • Just back on what was raised about jacking off the the tow/tie down point on the front of cars. I've used it plenty. I've also watched it on a car where you could see it move the front end of the car. It was like the front end/whole car being tweaked and twisted a bit. I will say, I struggle to find good jacking points on MOST cars. The ones that have good points, I then normally struggle to find a jack tall enough to make the car change height!   One of my go to points for either the jack, or the axel stands though, is either a suspension pickup point, OR a subframe to chassis major bolting point. I actually think its the subframe on my R33 that has a bit of a bend in it, from being jacked in the middle too. However, it could have been one of my many other cars I've had over the years! Or it could also be the from me jacking it up, and the fact the top of the front radiator support isn't there, so it can allow the front of the car to move and bend etc.
