G'day people,

this friday is going to be my first 1/4mile run.

im posting to see what people might have to say concering my preperation, it would be much appriciated to see what people have to say...

also if anyone could give me a time i could expect to run?

my car is a 96 series 2 GTST

3inch cat back exhaust

hi flow cat

type2 bov

k & n pod filter

stock boost, stock everything

my tyres are 225/50 on the standard rim...

im thinking of dropping the psi to about 20???

ive taken all my stereo gear out and all the loose bits n pieces...

if any one has any advice it would be much appriciated...

14's? what tyres have you got, depending on what sort of sidewall it has dropping the pressure in it might not be a good idea. Good luck with anyhow, are you gonna be running at Calder?

And thanks for the misleading title, I was hoping for a 1/4 mile big damsel with a punani the size of a house :P

Have fun, that is mainly what i'd recommend! just don't go in expecting massively good times, and you'll have fun and no matter what you run you'll be happy with. Its great.

From what i remember of Calder in melb, get their early, be prepared to line up for each run, make sure the officials can check your car and nothing is hanging obviously hanging off. The end of the track is a bit dicey and offroad so be prepared for stones and crap to flick up.

Let down your tyres a reasonable amount (check other threads). Make sure you have 1/2 a tank or so of the best premium you prefer.... Bring a decent motorbike helmet that won't kill your head having it on for a while... and don't act like a tool.

Getting the numbers off the next day is a bitch - but its cool driving around the streets with them on for a little bit :P

p.s. Did they ever fix the dodgy numbers on the board??

* Don't bother with a big smokey burnout, just scrub them clean in the burnout

* Drop your clutch from 3500-4000rpm

* Change at ~6,700rpm

* Don't back off until your back wheels have passed the finish line :P

thanks for the response fellas!

i was hoping nething better than a 14.5

nething less and i would be extactic!

my tyres are kumo silica's 225 with a 50 wall, i think 20psi would be alrite...

ive read of skylines like mine doing high 13second passes, i doubt i'd be pulling them off...

hopefully this is the first run of many and i suppose each time can only get better and better...

if anyone else is in melbourne you should come down to calder for the night, it would be good to see afew skylines running.

What time will you do?

Don't worry about it, just have fun! Use strategy and have a laugh, you will be more relaxed and produce a better effort. More importantly you will enjoy it.

Some tips.

Go to a road somewhere in your area that has a 100 - 110km speed limit (a private road of course). Preferably one with little traffic and probably at a time when there is less traffic around. Practice launches by pulling over waiting for a clear run. Goto the speed limit only, pull over again and repeat. You can try a variety of different launch rpms and more importantly throttle feeds.

For example try a 4000rpm launch with 3/4 throttle. With the car in 1st gear , and with the clutch in stab the throttle to 3/4. drop the clutch quickly as the revs hit 4000rpm (you have a fraction of a second to do this). See if the rear wheels break traction. If they do you need to back the throttle off to 1/2 the next time. If the car bogs down tho' try more revs.

Once you have the first 5-10m without wheelspin its time to floor the throttle completely. It's hard to resist but, if you do you should get off the line rather well. The alternative is easier - fry your clutch. It just isn't as cheap and when you have more power thanks to a big turbo ,the throttle feed skill will net you good times without you resorting to the winge ' oh but I had no traction....'. You also have a handbrake to use if you would like to absorb the excess power that would otherwise turn into wheelspin, it only helps a little bit but could be just enough.

Once at the drags bear in mind that the surface is usually more slippery for your tyres than that private road you tested on. So you might need to change things a little.

You can drop the pressure on the tyres to 20psi if you like, however do this after a few runs on the factory inflation if your having no joy. At factory inflation do not do a burnout (the heat increases the pressure in the tyre). After getting little joy on the factory inflation drop the pressure to 20psi and give it a small burnout (need to see some smoke off the tyres tho'. It means they are hot and as your a newbie you will probably take so long to stage they will cool down alot).

Try and get to the stage before the other guy if possible when your not doing burnouts at the factory inflation. This will give you more time to concentrate on what you want to do launch wise before the tree lights up.

Dropping the pressures in the rears does help with more grip during the launch and putting 40 to 45psi in the front will give less rolling resistance. I would have 16 or 17psi in the back.The 225 50's should bag up relatively well and it's not low enough to risk rolling the tyre on the rim. It's your first run..launch the same as you would if trying really hard at the traffic lights, then on subsequent runs you launch harder or softer depending on what kind of 60ft you got. Have a good time ....it's a blast

the lower tyre pressure means the sidewall can flex more and there is slightly more rubber contact on the road but, also it allows for heat to be put into the tyre without exceeding a good inflation pressure.

Makes sense, but if I am running nitrogen in my tyres, as far as I'm aware they keep the tyres cool, so I'm assuming that nitrogen is a no no if you want to run a qtr as they won't warm up the tyres??? It's a GTR I'm talking about.

    • What 1.5 way? There's no such thing really as a 1.5 way, just different ways of explaining 2 ways with different ramp rates. HOWEVER. In any driving in a straight line your 1.5 or 2 or 1.7 way should have no clunking at all. With the clutch fully depressed the diff should be silent (unless it's welded but I'm assuming it's not). Something aint right here.
    • Clutch is a spec brand, new clutch system,( PP, flywheel, friction disc, etc. pull type) installed 100 miles ago, with no problems.
    • looking for some help and maybe some insight on others experience with a new LSD. R34 GT ran and drove beautifully, but always alot of grip loss due to the open R200 rear end, so I just installed a new 1.5 LSD way into the stock open R200 for a ER34. Simple. Everything seemed right. I test drove for the first time this weekend. as I started to back out the garage the first time slowly with tires straight it sounded and felt like I had a loose or half disconnected drive shaft...that was clucking around loose and shaking entire vehicle, and making it feel like the trans clutch was spontaneously slipping then grabbing very roughly while just letting out pedal slowly. I backed it out went to pull forward with the same noise, shake and slip grab feeling with hesitation, I turned the tires to back out more and then pulled ahead some same thing but worst because of added wheel resistance (which that I expected) puzzled … pulling it back in checking everything over and finding nothing wrong, I tried it the next day. same thing, couldn’t believe how it shook everything again making a terrible noise and making it feel like the trans clutch was slipping and grabbing, but I got it out of garage into the driveway, got it straight, drove forward and then reveres a few times in a straight line everything shaking , causing what felt like clutch slip and grab every time, sounded like right behind front driver tire and I could feel it in the floor board with my feet,... worst right when beginning to let clutch pedal out to engage slightly, shuttering and sounding terrible along the way…I managed to slowly get down the road, babying it the whole way, once I was rolling (out of 1st) seemed to be better and between shifts, then clutch felt closer to normal…not slip/ grab etc., but back down to any stop, straight road or turning, same thing. Made no difference if all tires were straight or if I was turning. All other gauge read out correct. with in 2 miles as planned I reached the empty parking lot and performed the break in procedure that came with lsd, essentially to drive in a figure 8 a bunch.  Did this, binding chattering, and shaking the car the whole way. I drove it back home seemed somewhat normal once I was in straight line and past 10 mph or so, and I know it will “bind” on corners and cause some tires squeal when turning especially from a stop, but when I begin to move it still causes what feels like the trans clutch to slip and jerk badly as well as shaking the entire car, and sounds terrible, that I didn’t expect. I used the fluid they supplied with LSD kit and did the breaking, planning to change fluid as they suggest after breaking, but wondering will it get smoother or less aggressive with use? maybe a 1.5 is just too aggressive for normal road driving?   I have a LSD that I put in my 71 cuda when I restored it, with amazing smooth , quite yet effective results. Different style LSD but that ones a joy to drive. maybe expecting too much from this R200?
