Some things to note:

1) The odometers have ALL been clocked back TRUE

2) Insurance is a dog Insurance is the same price as other cars. My Mazda 6 (non-turbo, no mods) is more expensive in insure.

3) Car thieves LOVE these cars I'm not sure on that.

4) They've all been thrashed hard Most have had a moderately hard life. But how much can you thrash a car in daily driving ? 5 or 10% of the time?

5) They're old and hard to re-sell They're old? Genius. Yes, they are hard to re-sell, but not if you drop the price a grand or two. This person has a poor understand of how markets work. If they are hard to sell, then obviously the price is too high and you get it cheap, then you sell it cheap. IF you bought a $10k R33 in today's market and drove it for 2 years I reckon you'd get $8k back in 2014. Any other 300+ hp RWD, well handling car with climate control, ABS, power windows/mirror, you know of that will depreciate less than $1k per year? Please name it and I will buy one this weekend.

6) Cops will pull you over to try and give you a yellow sticker everywhere you go. I've owned my R33 for 6 years, it's been obviously modified the entire time (exhaust, lowered, wheels, etc). I've driven 130,000km in that time in Brisbane and Sydney. I've been pulled over once for random crap like that - I gave him a lesson in how to measure the height of cars, he said I had a bad attitude, I said maybe that's because my job is to measure stuff to 5 decimal places.....he let me go.

Here's some REAL world adivce. I drive 3 different cars on occasion. A Holden Viva, a Mazda 6, and the R33. Plus lots of kms in hire cars around Australia.

Here is some benefits:

1. The R33 is definitely the best one to drive in traffic because people let you in, they don't tail-gate, you get to reverse out of carparks without idiots walking behind you. You don't come around a corner and some idiot is standing on the road acting like you have to stop for them.

2. You can have some fun driving at normal speeds. I recommend good suspesion, not Teins or any lame superlow and super hard type.

3. Relative to other performance cars you are spending much much less money.

4. You can work on the car yourself and parts are quite easily available and reasonably priced.

IF you want a performance car then your choices are slim. You can go S-chassis, or R-chassis. Or RX-7, Supra, etc. If you want Euro then you'll have to pay more. I wouldn't rate any FWD hot hatch as being in the same league.

Right now, in 2012 we are in a golden age. Owning a performance car like a Skyline has NEVER been cheaper, and after all these S13, S14 and R32, R33, R34 get worn out, crashed, crushed and written off then the cheap performance car world will probably be over. The replacements will be the Z33, FT86 and euro-trash like the E90, GTi, Megane RS. Perhaps the Gti in manual might be fairly cheap to own if people buy their own parts from the UK, but it's nowhere near the performance of a decent Skyline.

im picking my r33 up next week,and i must say its proble the most excited ive been in a long time ,especially after driving it...............cant wait to start pouring some money into it........... :woot: any recomendations on the best tune shops in perth or around,heard alot of good about allstar garage................

Why Buy a skyline?

The joy of owning one, each time you see it parked in the drive you smile. wash it and still smile. Then you drive it and you will never wonder why you asked.

With any car you have to service it and if you modify find yourself a good tuner that can take care of the lot.

I have found plenty of help on the forums by reading and reading. I have had more trouble with the wifes focus than the skyline, if you love the car kms dont mean much its about condition so get it checked before purchase then change the belts.

"You can't rationalize cars like these. They're not something you buy with your head" -Jeremy Clarkson.

Every piece of logic and pragmatism dictates that you should not buy these cars, as Mad082 has, and will tell you and everyone (just a quiet observation :D).

But once you're set on a Skyline, it takes a lot to change your mind.

There are shiploads of reasons to not buy a skyline but they vanish like smoke compared to the one reason why you should,

Your heart tells you to.

To the realists, pragmatists, economists, gof**kyaselves.

The very name SKYLINE evokes images of the winfield car decimating all on the mountain, hakosuka's screaming like banshees, Well modded gtst's boosting through the tunnels, Roundabouts that look like straights. boys dragging their butts to school having their day lifted by the sight of a well modded car cruisin by. The condescending look from the square generation As a 1/4 throttle take off leaves the commo floundering. The pride when you cruise with your clubmates and people break their necks to look.

As an older car a skyline can still hold its head high in terms of bang for buck, A good one can do anything most of the newer offerings can and then some. Fuel economy is irelevant, who buys a high performance car and crys about the bowser, You're doing it wrong if you do.

Cost of ownership is largely dependant on you. A basicly stock skyline is a very reliable car, A modded version is as reliable as you make it. You skimp you pay. Do it right its fine. Parts cost is more than reasonable and with the network around the country there is a plethora of good used parts on hand at stupidly low prices making owning and maintaining a skyline even easier.

The real question to my mind is not wether you should buy a skyline or not but which model should you buy.

Noel and I are old enough to remember the awesome motoring performances of...

* Prince

* Hakosuka

* Fairlady

* 1600

* 240Z

* R32 GTR

...that shook the earth in rallying, tracks, slaloms and targas.

Euro cars tried to ignore them, condescend them and spurn them. In the end, they were forced to admire them. Why? Well for starters, Nissan Motor Co. car design and quality control was second to none. Did you know that the 1600 has a reinforced firewall; that in a front end collision, the engine will be pushed below the car? That its rallying prowess can be credited in part to its rear independent suspension with semi-trailing arms?

So ultimately, as you consider buying a GTR as many of us aspire to, remember that there is pedigree there which most car companies around the globe are envious of.

+1 to all these statements. Always loving the skyline it was inevitable that I would finally own one. Like others have said, besides the history of this iconic car, they are a buzz to own and drive. And also the good definitely out weighs the bad. I love these cars.

I must tender a huge rap here to SAU as a remarkable spinoff from these iconic cars. That's because without this great car club I'd never have been privileged to procure specifically, my 3rd and 4th GTRs :)

I hope some of you have experienced the same?

  • 2 weeks later...

Simple answer, would you rather buy Hyundai or Kia? Nay.. I will stick to my 1989 skyline... :rolleyes:

lol, actually i would, i wouldn't mind a i45 tourer personally, or perhaps an i30 diesel, however, in saying that, i've got an r32 gtr that i'd like to preserve lol

    • Update 3: Hi all It's been a while. Quite a lot of things happened in the meantime, among other things the car is (almost) back together and ready to be started again. Things that I fixed or changed: Full turbo removal, fitting back the OEM turbo oil hardlines. Had to do quite a bit of research and parts shopping to get every last piece that I need and make it work with the GT2860 turbos, but it does work and is not hard to do. Proves that the previous owner(s) just did not want to. While I was there I set the preload for the wastegates to 0,9bar to hopefully make it easier for the tuner to hit the 370hp I need for the legal inspections that will follow later on. Boost can always go up if necessary. Fitted a AN10 line from the catch can to the intake hose to make the catchcan and hopefully the cam covers a slight vacuum to have less restrictive oil returns from the head and not have mud build up as harshly in the lines and catch can. Removed the entire front interior just shy of the dashboard itself to clean up some of the absolutely horrendous wiring, (hopefully) fix the bumpy tacho and put in LED bulbs while I was there. Also put in bulbs where there was none before, like the airbag one. I also used that chance to remove the LED rpm gauge on the steering column, which was also wired in absolute horror show fashion. Moved the 4in1 Prosport gauge from sitting in front of the OEM oil pressure gauge to the center console vents, I used a 3D printed vent piece to hold that gauge there. The HKB steering wheel boss was likely on incorrectly as I sometimes noticed the indicator reset being uneven for left vs. right. In the meantime also installed an airbag delete resistor, as one should. Installed Cube Speed premium short shifter. Feels pretty nice, hope it'll work great too when I actually get to drive. Also put on a fancy Dragon Ball shift knob, cause why not. My buddy was kind enough to weld the rust hole in the back, it was basically rusted through in the lowermost corner of the passenger side trunk area where the wheel arch, trunk panel and rear quarter all meet. Obviously there is still a lot of crustiness in various areas but as long as it's not rusted out I'll just treat and isolate the corrosion and pretend it's not there. Also had to put down a new ground wire for the rear subframe as the original one was BARELY there. Probably a bit controversial depending on who you ask about this... but I ended up just covering the crack in the side of the engine block, the one above the oil feed, with JB Weld. I used a generous amount and roughed up the whole area with a Dremel before, so I hope this will hold the coolant where it should be for the foreseeable future. Did a cam cover gasket job as the half moons were a bit leaky, and there too one could see the people who worked on this car before me were absolute tools. The same half moons were probably used like 3 times without even cleaning the old RTV off. Dremeled out the inside of the flange where the turbine housing mates onto the exhaust manifolds so the diameter matches, as the OEM exhaust manifolds are even narrower than the turbine housings as we all know. Even if this doesn't do much, I had them out anyways, so can't harm. Ideally one would port-match both the turbo and the manifold to the gasket size but I really didn't feel up to disassembling the turbine housings. Wrapped turbo outlet dumps in heat wrap band. Will do the frontpipe again as well as now the oil leak which promted me to tear apart half the engine in the first place is hopefully fixed. Fitted an ATI super damper to get rid of the worn old harmonic balancer. Surely one of the easiest and most worth to do mods. But torquing that ARP bolt to spec was a bitch without being able to lock the flywheel. Did some minor adjustments in the ECU tables to change some things I didn't like, like the launch control that was ALWAYS active. Treated rusty spots and surface corrosion on places I could get to and on many spots under the car, not pretty or ideal but good enough for now. Removed the N1 rear spats and the carbon surrounding for the tailpipe to put them back on with new adhesive as the old one was lifting in many spots, not pretty. Took out the passenger rear lamp housing... what do you know. Amateur work screwed me again here as they were glued in hard and removing it took a lot of force, so I broke one of the housing bolts off. And when removing the adhesive from the chassis the paint came right off too. Thankfully all the damaged area won't be visible later, but whoever did the very limited bodywork on this car needs to have their limbs chopped off piece by piece.   Quite a list if I do say so myself, but a lot of time was spent just discovering new shit that is wrong with the car and finding a solution or parts to fix it. My last problem that I now have the headache of dealing with is that the exhaust studs on the turbo outlets are M10x1.25 threaded, but the previous owner already put on regular M10 nuts so the threads are... weird. I only found this out the hard way. So now I will just try if I can in any way fit the front pipe regardless, if not I'll have to redo the studs with the turbos installed. Lesson learned for the future: Redo ALL studs you put your hands on, especially if they are old and the previous owners were inept maniacs. Thanks for reading if you did, will update when the engine runs again. Hope nothing breaks or leaks and I can do a test drive.
    • No those pads are DBA too  but they have colors too. I look at the and imo the green "street" are the best.
    • I’m not sure what happened I told them about sonic tunes free OTS tune and the next the I know .. I was booted..   To funny
    • Yea - I mean I've seen my fuel pump which is decades old and uh, while I'm not saying this with real knowledge... but I sure get the ick at using anything in the fuel system that produced the state of that pump. Many years ago I went through multiple pumps (and strainers) before I dropped the tank to clean it out with extreme violence. I'm talking the car would do maybe 50km before coming to a halt, which resulted in me cleaning out the filter with some brake cleaner and going on my way. None of my stuff ever looked like what came out of your fuel tank. I don't think I'd be happy with it unless every single component was replaced (or at least checked/cleaned/confirmed to be clean here).
