Hi Guys,

I'm in the market for a used GTR and just looking through the pros and cons of the year models. I would be looking to do some "light" mods such as exhaust and Cobb tune so just have a question I'm hoping you guys can help with...

The 2009/2010 model has 357kw compared to the 2011 model with 390kw. Would similar gains in power be achieved with the exhaust and Cobb tune (for both 2009/10 versus the 2011) meaning the 390kw factory power would be a better base to start with? Or would the 33kw difference be negated with the mods ie. both models would have similar power with the exhaust + Cobb tune? I'm just thinking that maybe the 33kw power rise might be attributed to a something simple like an increase in factory boost which would be irrelevant after a Cobb tune.

I hope what I'm asking makes sense?? I'm just looking for justification for spending the extra $$s on a 2011 or even a 2012 model :)

Best value for money is an 09 model. You can easily get the additional power with a Cobb/ecutek and exhaust update which are quite reasonably priced. I have ecutek remap and y pipe on mine with the updated lc5 software and it's got about 40 more hp than a 2012 model.

The new models do have some nice interior updates and revisions but you are paying a premium for this. There are also suspension updates etc on the newer models but unless you plan to track it regularly and are a very good driver ( which I am not) you probably won't notice the difference between the models.

There have been no internal engine or turbo changes

The gain in power has come mainly from oem ecu tuning (plus some minor exhaust changes and larger turbo inlet pipes - aftermarket versions of both will nett you more power anyway).

So basically same mods on any year will produce same power at end of the day

Alternatively, you could buy a 2009, keep it stock and purchase a Willall Renew package (includes Cobb + tunes) from Willall in SA. Martin has PM'd me a while back indicating this is good for 30+kw over current 2012 models, which in my mind would be more than enough power. I'll be getting this once I tie up a few other committments early next year :).

The launch control is updated in the newer model. I think the old LC1 chewed up a few gearboxes of the first cars so they updated he software in later models and are now on LC5. In the UK you can also get the latest gearbox software installed which makes the gear shifts much smother and less jerky around town.

Not sure if you can get this here in Australia.

    • Hi...so a "development" here aswell The swap is "done" and car went "test drive" BUT it seems the clutch(maybe gearbox?) is a little bit sad? I bought this clutch kit https://justjap.com/products/xtreme-heavy-duty-organic-clutch-flywheel-kit-nissan-skyline-r31-r32-r33-push-type "Problem" is that the first gear is hard to put into and it seems that the clutch is not disengaged. It was not the problem with the old clutch...(or like sometime the first gear would not get as easy specialy when the fluid was cold) So? Can it be like...bad "install" or is the clutch wrong ((it should not have been) i done research to get the right one) Or is this "normal" with new clutch and needs to be break in?
    • @Duncan I can try  and thanks i did not thought about VIN and part numbers for 33/34. @GTSBoy yeah it looks like iam gonna do that
    • Forgot to include this but this is the mid section of my steering rack that looks like it has a thread/can be turned with that notch mentioned in the post:
    • Hey everyone, Wanted to pick some brains about this issue I'm having with rebuilding my 33 rack (PN is 49001-19U05). All of the tutorials/videos I've seen online are either R34 or S Chassis racks which seem to be pretty straightforward to disassemble but this process doesnt carry over to my rack. Few of the key differences that I've noted The pinion shaft on the other racks bolt on with 3 torx bolts: Whereas my rack bolts on with 2 allen head bolts: These changes are pretty inconsequential but the main difference is how you pull the actual rack out of the housing. The other skyline/s chassis racks can be taken out by tapping the rack out of the body with a socket and it just slides right out. I'm unable to do that with my rack because there's a hard stop at the end that doesn't let the seal/shaft be tapped out. Can also see a difference in the other end of the rack where mine has a notch that looks like you're able to use a big wrench to unthread 2 halves of the rack whereas the other racks are just kinda set in with a punch. My rack: Other racks: TLDR; Wanted to know if anyone has rebuilt this specific model of steering rack for the R33 and if there were any steps to getting it done easier or if I should just give this to a professional to get done. Sorry if this post is a bit messy, first one I've done.
    • I would just put EBC back on the "I would not use their stuff" pile and move on.
