Hey all,

It's been some time now since I've been back on the forums. I've recently encountered an issue with my jzx100 I know this isn't the right place to be asking but thought I'd try my luck. Have posted on the jzx forums but nobody is providing me an accurate answer. Thought I'd swing past here and see maybe if someone with a bit more knowledge could point me in the right direction with somewhat of a more accurate response.

Here's a link to my thread on the jzx forums please let me know what you guys think it may be.

Best regards and looking forwards to your responses.

Could be just the camera amplifying the sound but that sounds bottom end noise to me rather than top end. It has the characteristic bottom end thump as opposed to top end rattle. Very unusual for it to be so intermittent thought.

Extremely hard to tell via a vid. Taken it to a workshop to get someone to check it?

It was definitely knocking coming from somewhere in the head. Got underneath the car to try and listen but couldn't hear a thing.. Ever since I've removed the cam covers and unplugged all the coilpacks and re plugged them back in the noise has stopped. If it was bottom end knocking it still doesn't explain the misfire and it just stopping all of a sudden.

The noise is very faint in the video you can barely hear it as opposed to listening to it in person, Haven't taken it to a workshop yet but leaning towards the ignition system or a crappy batch of 98 ron I purchased from woolworths service station.

The car also seems to idle hunt when holding the accelerator in a fixed position after 10 seconds or so and continues to idle hunt for a few seconds after releasing the accelerator.

Guys from the forums think it also may have something to do with a faulty vvt-i solenoid.

im interested to know whats happened, have you tried a piece of pipe to your ear and place it on the rockers and underneath on the sump, might get closer to the noise,

Id like to know what effect a few cylinders not firing would have on the crank and bearings, some late model cars can shut down individual cylinders but that would be a balanced arrangement.

Since the noise has gone there's been no need to listen with a hose... The car still makes the same power under load but the misfire only occurs under the conditions I've mentioned throughout both of these threads.

I have heard many a VQ make noise from the cam actuation, I wonder if they use the same design for the advance mechanism... They knock within a certain rev range and the noise disappears with the vct unplugged.

    • A few small updates since the previous post and lessons. I decided to do a little interior light upgrade on the 110. I quite like the iilumo items, even if they're a bit of a premium over other brands. You'll also note the Stedi Fogs, that will go into the S15 fog lights as I needed to match the bulbs since I got the new ones earlier. I hope they fit as the body is quite a bit longer than your normal bulb.  Annoyingly, I managed to trip the fuse, which normally wouldn't be an issue until I located the fuse. I can't say I've ever come across this. I had lucked out that someone nearby had a spare, but oddly enough Toyota dealerships seem to keep this in stock. I ordered some to keep in my stash and as luck would have it, someone else nearby tripped the same fuse so I passed on the favour.  I also did a little service on the 110 ahead of some additional work coming up. It's been annoying that Goleby's stopped carrying this particular HKS filter for the 110, so now I need to keep them on order from Japan. I also took the opportunity to install a bash plate and number plate riser. The plate riser is such a cheap but nice fix to help really tidy up the car. I'm tempted to now also replace my headlights, on this car. Both items were from Project Aero.    I also needed to replace the rear tyres on the 110, and after trying to get it aligned learnt that I need to replace some bushes in the front end, so that's next.  Closing out this update with a nicer picture as always!
    • Yeah mate, never miss it.
    • Any going to watch World Time Attack at SMSP this year?
    • Appreciate the correction on the "ground", that will make a huge difference to looking at this. That makes complete sense about AF70/AF71 which is what I had come down to being the issue, one of these. I'll have another look in the ignition wiring when I get a chance next week. I'll also make up a jumper wire for running that AF73 test.  ECU is fine, relay itself is fine, pump harness is fine and the pump itself is fine. I am going to upgrade the Walbro 255 anyway with a DW300 I have since I need to replace the fuel sender and I'm going to upgrade the FPR with my chasebays kit ready for new plenum/injectors/dbw, but I'll get this working first. That's why this is so frustrating.
