now that you mention it, i can't seem to remember a beeping with lights on + keys out. I know if i have door open + keys in, car will beep.

It should be the same beep... I'll double check later haha

The beep is faster when you have your headlights on, beep is slower when you have the lights off with the key in. Same tone as reversing but at different intervals. Shotty one for myself!

And yes, I assume it is for the lights to turn on automatically when it gets dark, as there are no other options that would make the lights work auto besides a feature where an oncoming vehicle, it will dip the HIDs a bit, but there are no sensors in the lights for this feature.

Will buy one and post results

^ That's what I'd want.. Instead of turning your lights off for you lol..

Can anyone else confirm that it turns lights on when it gets dark?

I have the auto light stalk on mine, ill check tomorrow night... I remember when i first bought the car i noticed the lights came on around dusk, about an hour before you wanted them on. Also i imagine they would turn on and off when ever you go under shade...

I just drove it out of the garage and back in.

-Turn off when you open the door

-Turn on when it's dark/shady/still bright enough not to need them

edit. my handbook says you shouldn't leave them on or the battery will go flat, this was in the auto headlight section.

Hmmmmm... So you are saying that you can't just leave the stalk on Auto when the car is off??

So basically I'd need to start the car, put it on Auto and when I get out or finish driving, turn it off?

HAHAHAHHA if that's what you need to do then that makes it a redundant feature.

But the question is: for those of us whose cars didn't come with this stalk, will our car have the light sensor?

I think all R34 has the light sensor? Its located on the front left of your dash.

But can one of you guys please receive the stalk and test it quickly? So I can get one? There's only one left lol

Well I know stagea's also have an Auto mirrors option too. Where if you leave the switch in auto, it will automatically close your mirrors when you turn your car off and open them when you turn your car on.

Maybe on the 35's but the c34's don't.

I'd like the auto folding mirrors when powered down, until they start to fail and only close half way and don't open again :P 5am and in winter and you have to manually push it out haha.

Mine has the auto folding mirrors via the switch.

The 35's also dip automatically when reversing from what i've read on here.

It seems like a fun mod to have auto lights, but honestly guys, they aren't that great. They turn on in dusk and probable turn on and off when going through shady areas with trees. I personally used them once and never again until this afternoon.

Also charles, there are always people wrecking stageas on gumtree and on these forums.

I think it's more of an option for people who drives to places that has plenty of tunnels or underground or where light doesn't usually go. I see a logic in having them set to auto when driving in sunlight, then tunel, sunlight again and tunel again so saves you the hassle of having to turn them off and on all the time, though I drive with my headlights on anyway regardless of the sunlight :)

But yes I'd assume if you leave it on auto, as you have no need to turn on the car to have the headlights work, of course it will drain the battery when it gets dark. Just as bad as leaving your headlights on when parking.

I received mine today, and tested it with no results.

The connectors to the switch is different to the non auto light stalks. I will be making mods to my plug to fit it, there are two extra "rail" tabs sticking out the side in which the non-auto one has the groove for it to slide into. I'll update this weekend.

Oh damn.... I hope you can get it to work, should be pretty cool feature to have :D

I have been following this topic for a while now so I decided to create an account and post my findings. I bought one of the auto sticks and as preciously said, it's not plug and play. First, I trimmed the plug to fit the auto stick, but the problem doesn't end there, not only do I think the wiring for the plug is different to the wiring of the plug for the stalks without the auto switch (explains the notch to prevent people from doing it XD), but the cars manufactured without the auto stalk are missing the auto headlight control unit, it's supposed to be located behind the combination meter, the plug is there (right up the back, it was taped to a black cylindrical bar, it's a gray plug), but alas, you need to find the unit at the wreckers and plug it in. If I get my hands on this part I'll gladly update you guys, as even though some people have said its not worth it, it's still an interesting thing to do and you learn a bit about the wiring of the car.

Are you able to remove the combination meter to show us what the auto headlight control unit looks like? it should be located right at the back (a largish module), it would be a great help for us to find one

P.S sorry for the double post, there was no option to add a quote to my post

Was fortunate enough to find it at a wrecking yard, it's an L shaped black thing with a light sensor on top, it is also accompanied by a bit of trip that has a clear plastic circle piece in it, it's available only in sedan models, but fits coupe models, to get this to work, either a new loom is required for the headlights, etc, or running new cables and chopping the old ones, I may end up doing the latter, however there are two relays that I can't find, the tail lamp relay, and the headlight relay, I'm not sure if they are in the fuse box in the engine bay, or under the dash, the headlight relay in the worship manual for the auto headlight has 7 pins, maybe somebody can solve this mystery until I next get a chance to see a sedan r34

  • 4 weeks later...

Well, for anybody who is still interested in having the auto headlight feature, here's a simple guide. This feature was only available on sedan models or as an optional extra as I have gathered.

Things required:

R34 sedan fuse box (as we need the exclusive 7 pin relays (6 pin really) that the sedan has) ~ $50

Auto headlight stalk ~ $15-20

Auto headlight control unit with trim with a clear plastic circle (black L shaped box posted above, trim is located directly above the unit, the bit with the grill) ~ $20-30

Soldering iron

Wire (coloured is preferable, red and black coloured wires was what I used)

Electrical tape (I don't specifically tell you to use it, but whenever you have finished soldering a joint etc, wrap it up)

Total cost of car parts $85-100

Difficulty - Hard (not for the faint of heart, as we will be ripping the car to pieces xD you have been warned!)

1. This is the easiest part, acquire all the bits and find the connected for the auto headlight control unit (behind the cluster) it should be a light grey plug and is taped to the loom running across the back.

2. Go open the bonnet and unbolt the fuse box, note to do this you will need to take off the funnel for the window washing liquid (just give it a small pull after undoing the bolt holding it in) and take the battery out (probably a good thing for what we are going to do next)

3. This is a little tricky, we need to get access to the underneath of the fuse and relay panel, to do this, there are 4 tabs located on the top and bottom of the brown panel holding the fuses and relays in, once all four are pushed in, you can proceed with lifting it up. It doesn't budge you say? Oh right.. you need to undo the Japanese bondage tape (MCM reference xD) where the loom enters from the drivers side side panel to the fuse box (it covers a plastic tab on the fuse box), this frees the fuse box and allows you to push the loom into the fuse box so that the brown piece can lift out with a bit more ease. Next, have a look at the bottom of the sedan box and coupe box, you will notice on the coupe that the relay holder down the bottom is missing 3 pins, grab the wires with the sockets on them from the sedan version by using a small flat head to bend the plastic bits and slide the connectors out then insert them into the coupe fuse box, they should click in and not come back out. That's the easy part..

4. If you made it this far you are determined, it's not so bad, now, undo the connectors to the head light stalk, next you need to take the drivers side side panel off (mind the paint, it's too easy for the clips on the inside of the drivers side door to scratch the door when taking it off the car >.>) now, look at the r34 workshop manual and scroll down to the auto headlight section, have a look at the headlight stalk connector pins, we will be referring to this layout (for reference, you are looking at the back of the plug, not the front, stupid I know as its more annoying to test). For this part, we need to run 3 new wires from the headlight stalk to the fuse box (run them along the loom as it helps). Next go to the fuse box side and solder one of the wires you just ran to the fuse box to the thinner wire we inserted into the fuse box earlier, next, push out the 2 relays for the head light left and right and cut the wires leading to them, now this is just a guessing game, if you don't care about the fuses being misleading, just solder the 2 xenon wires to the other 2 wires we placed in the fuse box, and you are done, if you care about the order of the fuses, unsolder then switch them around, that's the low beams done. To tidy up, there is a holder for 2 15A fuses on the bottom right of the fuse box, cut the fat red wire going to it and pull, if you cut the relays before, the 2 wires should do a loop the loop around the fuse box and come out cleanly, as for the fat red wire, it's connected on the top of the fuse box, just cut it off, as it's not needed anymore, and put the 2 15A fuses in the bottom two empty slots of the fuse box, cut the wires back from the relays cut earlier and tape them at the ends, connect the battery and test to see if the low beams work after you touch the wire going to the head light stalk to ground if so, we shall move on.

    • Update 3: Hi all It's been a while. Quite a lot of things happened in the meantime, among other things the car is (almost) back together and ready to be started again. Things that I fixed or changed: Full turbo removal, fitting back the OEM turbo oil hardlines. Had to do quite a bit of research and parts shopping to get every last piece that I need and make it work with the GT2860 turbos, but it does work and is not hard to do. Proves that the previous owner(s) just did not want to. While I was there I set the preload for the wastegates to 0,9bar to hopefully make it easier for the tuner to hit the 370hp I need for the legal inspections that will follow later on. Boost can always go up if necessary. Fitted a AN10 line from the catch can to the intake hose to make the catchcan and hopefully the cam covers a slight vacuum to have less restrictive oil returns from the head and not have mud build up as harshly in the lines and catch can. Removed the entire front interior just shy of the dashboard itself to clean up some of the absolutely horrendous wiring, (hopefully) fix the bumpy tacho and put in LED bulbs while I was there. Also put in bulbs where there was none before, like the airbag one. I also used that chance to remove the LED rpm gauge on the steering column, which was also wired in absolute horror show fashion. Moved the 4in1 Prosport gauge from sitting in front of the OEM oil pressure gauge to the center console vents, I used a 3D printed vent piece to hold that gauge there. The HKB steering wheel boss was likely on incorrectly as I sometimes noticed the indicator reset being uneven for left vs. right. In the meantime also installed an airbag delete resistor, as one should. Installed Cube Speed premium short shifter. Feels pretty nice, hope it'll work great too when I actually get to drive. Also put on a fancy Dragon Ball shift knob, cause why not. My buddy was kind enough to weld the rust hole in the back, it was basically rusted through in the lowermost corner of the passenger side trunk area where the wheel arch, trunk panel and rear quarter all meet. Obviously there is still a lot of crustiness in various areas but as long as it's not rusted out I'll just treat and isolate the corrosion and pretend it's not there. Also had to put down a new ground wire for the rear subframe as the original one was BARELY there. Probably a bit controversial depending on who you ask about this... but I ended up just covering the crack in the side of the engine block, the one above the oil feed, with JB Weld. I used a generous amount and roughed up the whole area with a Dremel before, so I hope this will hold the coolant where it should be for the foreseeable future. Did a cam cover gasket job as the half moons were a bit leaky, and there too one could see the people who worked on this car before me were absolute tools. The same half moons were probably used like 3 times without even cleaning the old RTV off. Dremeled out the inside of the flange where the turbine housing mates onto the exhaust manifolds so the diameter matches, as the OEM exhaust manifolds are even narrower than the turbine housings as we all know. Even if this doesn't do much, I had them out anyways, so can't harm. Ideally one would port-match both the turbo and the manifold to the gasket size but I really didn't feel up to disassembling the turbine housings. Wrapped turbo outlet dumps in heat wrap band. Will do the frontpipe again as well as now the oil leak which promted me to tear apart half the engine in the first place is hopefully fixed. Fitted an ATI super damper to get rid of the worn old harmonic balancer. Surely one of the easiest and most worth to do mods. But torquing that ARP bolt to spec was a bitch without being able to lock the flywheel. Did some minor adjustments in the ECU tables to change some things I didn't like, like the launch control that was ALWAYS active. Treated rusty spots and surface corrosion on places I could get to and on many spots under the car, not pretty or ideal but good enough for now. Removed the N1 rear spats and the carbon surrounding for the tailpipe to put them back on with new adhesive as the old one was lifting in many spots, not pretty. Took out the passenger rear lamp housing... what do you know. Amateur work screwed me again here as they were glued in hard and removing it took a lot of force, so I broke one of the housing bolts off. And when removing the adhesive from the chassis the paint came right off too. Thankfully all the damaged area won't be visible later, but whoever did the very limited bodywork on this car needs to have their limbs chopped off piece by piece. Quite a list if I do say so myself, but a lot of time was spent just discovering new shit that is wrong with the car and finding a solution or parts to fix it. My last problem that I now have the headache of dealing with is that the exhaust studs on the turbo outlets are M10x1.25 threaded, but the previous owner already put on regular M10 nuts so the threads are... weird. I only found this out the hard way. So now I will just try if I can in any way fit the front pipe regardless, if not I'll have to redo the studs with the turbos installed. Lesson learned for the future: Redo ALL studs you put your hands on, especially if they are old and the previous owners were inept maniacs. Thanks for reading if you did, will update when the engine runs again. Hope nothing breaks or leaks and I can do a test drive.
    • No those pads are DBA too but they have colors too. I look at the and imo the green "street" are the best.
    • I’m not sure what happened I told them about sonic tunes free OTS tune and the next the I know .. I was booted.. To funny
    • Yea - I mean I've seen my fuel pump which is decades old and uh, while I'm not saying this with real knowledge... but I sure get the ick at using anything in the fuel system that produced the state of that pump. Many years ago I went through multiple pumps (and strainers) before I dropped the tank to clean it out with extreme violence. I'm talking the car would do maybe 50km before coming to a halt, which resulted in me cleaning out the filter with some brake cleaner and going on my way. None of my stuff ever looked like what came out of your fuel tank. I don't think I'd be happy with it unless every single component was replaced (or at least checked/cleaned/confirmed to be clean here).
    • I'm not going to recommend an EBC pad. I don't like them. Just about anything else would suit me better. I've been using Intima pads for a while now.
