So i got another EPA notice in the mail, my second one in the last two months. My exhaust isn't even that loud :(

Question being, second time around, are they any more harsh when it comes to the test? I barely passed with an 88dB(out of 90dB) last time.

I don't think they're any more harsh.

Have you offended a neighbour (who might be in the motor trade)?

So in NSW, for example, if a neighbour believes you have a noisy car, they can go to the local authorities and dob you in. You then get an EPA notice in the mail and are required to pass a check/test?

Same in Vic. Guilty until proven innocent. I got a letter in the mail, didn't even get pulled over, had to go for full emissions and noise testing. Took two weeks to put the car back to stock - and another two to put it all back on muhahaha.

And to add to what Terry said - in NSW there is an actual EPA iPhone app. All you have to do is type in the rego of a smokey/noisey car and press 'send'.

Nek minut, letter in mail.

(As a side note, if you're a car enthusiast in NSW my suggestion would be to download that app, and report as many smokey rust buckets as you can - keep them busy with other things ;-))

God i hope not, i usually enter my court in the third or fourth gear, but in the letter it does say 'report lodged by an officer of the Victorian police'?

I'll go in for the test and let you guys know how i go with my little gasket mod.

We purchased a Diesel landcruiser with an EPA notice which we found out recently... I spoke to the EPA and they said you can get reported repeatedly BUT if you pass the test everytime with the same system (they take photos for proof) the situation is then reported as a nuisance report and I think future ones are investegated.

We failed with 103db lol

haha my sister got an EPA a few months back- Opened it up and someone had dobbed in for tossing and object out the window...

then it stated the offense could occur a fine if the police spotted it

i got pinched for exhaust note a few years ago - Was such a pain to get cleared - Days off work, sent me back as my silencer was not welled to the cannon? Never heard of that shit before....

$65 each time for the mechanic to do the testing...

then you were probably on boost going past a cop who was off duty.

It scares me how often this may happen for me either in the skyline or the GSXR here in perth with the hoon laws. Im very alert for cop cars and in 4 yrs have only ever been pulled over once (including the bike and the skyline) and it was for 12 over...

With this EPA thing you guys have over there it sounds like its worth having really quiet exhausts, n no induction, bov, or wastegate noise or you are going to get trouble coming at you...

I went close to WOT one time at the lights coming back from work (around ~10pm), while there was a cop on a bike a few cars back. They changed lanes & sped up & matched my speed for a bit (I wasn't really speeding anyway) & then turned off & didn't do anything.

Win Win situation.

Is there any way to check the EPA status of a car before purchase?

I understand the "buyer beware" mentality when it comes to things these days so you know who to blame.

However, in this case with the Landcruiser if there is no way to check can you "legally" put that back on the previous owner?

Turbo Diesel yes, NO black smoke at all and one of the cleanest 80 series on the road!

    • Hi all,   long time listener, first time caller   i was wondering if anyone can help me identify a transistor on the climate control unit board that decided to fry itself   I've circled it in the attached photo   any help would be appreciated
    • I mean, I got two VASS engineers to refuse to cert my own coilovers stating those very laws. Appendix B makes it pretty clear what it considers 'Variable Suspension' to be. In my lived experience they can't certify something that isn't actually in the list as something that requires certification. In the VASS engineering checklist they have to complete (LS3/NCOP11) and sign on there is nothing there. All the references inside NCOP11 state that if it's variable by the driver that height needs to maintain 100mm while the car is in motion. It states the car is lowered lowering blocks and other types of things are acceptable. Dialling out a shock is about as 'user adjustable' as changing any other suspension component lol. I wanted to have it signed off to dissuade HWP and RWC testers to state the suspension is legal to avoid having this discussion with them. The real problem is that Police and RWC/Pink/Blue slip people will say it needs engineering, and the engineers will state it doesn't need engineering. It is hugely irritating when aforementioned people get all "i know the rules mate feck off" when they don't, and the actual engineers are pleasant as all hell and do know the rules. Cars failing RWC for things that aren't listed in the RWC requirements is another thing here entirely!
    • I don't. I mean, mine's not a GTR, but it is a 32 with a lot of GTR stuff on it. But regardless, I typically buy from local suppliers. Getting stuff from Japan is seldom worth the pain. Buying from RHDJapan usually ends up in the final total of your basket being about double what you thought it would be, after all the bullshit fees and such are added on.
    • The hydrocarbon component of E10 can be shittier, and is in fact, shittier, than that used in normal 91RON fuel. That's because the octane boost provided by the ethanol allows them to use stuff that doesn't make the grade without the help. The 1c/L saving typically available on E10 is going to be massively overridden by the increased consumption caused by the ethanol and the crappier HC (ie the HCs will be less dense, meaning that there will definitely be less energy per unit volume than for more dense HCs). That is one of the reasons why P98 will return better fuel consumption than 91 does, even with the ignition timing completely fixed. There is more energy per unit volume because the HCs used in 98 are higher density than in the lawnmower fuel.
    • No, I'd suggest that that is the checklist for pneumatic/hydraulic adjustable systems. I would say, based on my years of reading and complying with Australian Standards and similar regulations, that the narrow interpretation of Clause 3.2 b would be the preferred/expected/intended one, by the author, and those using the standard. Wishful thinking need not apply.
