gts-wpn
My car produces a clicking or clunking noise whenever i change gears or take off from idle, if you take off very slowly you can't hear it but if you take off quicker you can hear it. Its coming from the rear end of the car, and its R33 series 1. Any help or advice appreciated. What could be the problem, has anyone else experienced this? Thanks. wrxhoon
hard to say without hearing but it maybe a uni joint on the tailshaft Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/42898-clunking-noise-from-rear-end-of-carhelp-needed/#findComment-875295 Share on other sites
Revhead
Yep - More than likely it's the uni. They're cheap to fix though, so it's all good Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/42898-clunking-noise-from-rear-end-of-carhelp-needed/#findComment-875335 Share on other sites
red17
My brothers 180SX did something similar, turned out it was actually the differential itself. Bax
My guess is uni, or at least one of the joints in the shaft, get it looked at now before your driving along and it fails completely. gts-wpn
The thing is it isn't affecting the performance of the car at all, it just seems to be there. And its been like that for a while i just never really cared if it was major or not but just thought i might need to get it checked out. knore
forgive my stupidness but where is the uni joint and what directly does it do ? Revhead
Universal joint - it's a join that will move in "any" direction, and still maintain a solid connection. On a tailshaft, it's the bit that connects the shaft to the diff. As the diff can move (well, in non-IRS cars anyway) and so can the gearbox etc, the join must be flexible. No doubt someone will have a pic floating around. gts-wpn
So if its the supspension, is it a serious problem at all? And how much did it cost you to get it fixed? GR33DY
guys i had the same problem too.. when to two suspension specialists and still couldnt find anything wrong.. so i did a bit of investigating my self and found it to be my wires in the boot coming out of my subs and knocking against the body of my car.. i also found a pen in there as well as some screws lol... probably isnt the problem but worth having a look..?!?! Roy
I have been to two different places to try and find the source of the clicking noise coming from the right rear of my car. Noone has been able to find it. To a certain extent the car has always made the noise, and i have had the car for 4 years. Its nto the diff, fluids have been changed many times with no change, its not the uni joint as they have been inspected and found to be in better condition then aother cars in the workshop, and not susp as all my susp has been changed at on etime or another.... so i am at a loss to find the source of the clicking noise....oh and not lieky to be tools etc, as the time when it is easiest to hear is when pulling out of the pits with the concrete wall on the outside and the clicking noise reverberates off the pit wall, plus all the boot trim, spare wheel, jack etc is removed. It could be anything, including the things i have listed as not being the source of the problem, only i couldnt be bothered throwing money at it when noone knows what it is....if you know the answer you could be the only one in the counthry that has fixed the prob. Its one of those probs that haunts me Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/42898-clunking-noise-from-rear-end-of-carhelp-needed/#findComment-886669 Share on other sites
Craved
does it do it everytime you take off? could be just the brake pads moving on the pins, have similar click when i suddenly jump on the breaks... or the handbrake pads moving off... just a thought Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/42898-clunking-noise-from-rear-end-of-carhelp-needed/#findComment-887222 Share on other sites
skypilot
My car also has the click when i reverse. Its actualy at its loudest when i reverse. i thought it could be my cat sensor wire knocking on the exhaust but i tied it up and the noise is still there. Revhead
That noise will more than likely be driveline backlash. Not a major problem, just annoying. You can usually avoid making the noise with practice, and by being a bit smoother. And yes, you can do it with a button clutch Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/42898-clunking-noise-from-rear-end-of-carhelp-needed/#findComment-888645 Share on other sites
Greg
I suffer "driveline backlash" - when I push the clutch in suddenly - eg i was reversing out of a carpark and someone ran behind me - i get a loud clunking sort of noise. It feels painful for the driveline, what is suffering? Uni joints, diff?
