hey guys i bought a built r33 a few months ago. The motor was forged in Feb and tuned in march but due to a misfire it wasn't tuned to its full potential. It was then defected in march and taken off the road till now.

I bought it with the misfire issue fixed and the gates timing belt was noisy. I took it to a repeatable workshop and they took the fan, belt and timing belt and all that off and adjusted the timing belt so wasn't noisy much anymore and they did say it was fairly tight.

After that i drove the car home very slowly as i didn't want to give it to it hard before the tune. It was at home for a month not moved much till yesterday i took it for the touch up tune and after 30mins on the dyno the freking waterpump broke, pushed the fan into the radiator made holes in it and smashed the shroud. Long story short shit hit the fan.. literally..

Anyways it was a 7000km old motor and water pump and it was a genuine nissan pump. tuner thinks the pulley belt was too tight and broke the pump. and who ever tighten it last

Now do you guys think when the shop did the timing belt adjustment he tighten the pulley too tight after it? (they are a very reputable shop), he said who ever did the belt before them made it too tight as the timing belt was tight aswell.

I called the shop and they said we are not stupid and we wouldnt do something like that stupid.

The reality is the pump was runing fine for 7000km on and off the dyno but after they did the timing belt it wasnt driven more than 30-40km till it broke.

what do you guys think i should do?

its a $1000 repair which im not sure who's liable for it. thanks for your time :)

Welcome to the world of Modified cars :P

Spending too much time trying to pin blame on a workshop for the many issues that pop up with a modded car, just leaves people with a bad opinion of you and your car.

The belt isn't on right now obviously, so you can't say for sure that it was too tight. I've seen 3-4 people have water pumps fail within the past year on the forums and facebook. A few of them being mechanics themselves, and know how to install belts properly... instead the casing of the pump broke apart for some reason...

Buy a new n1 pump from the states, buy an aftermarket alloy radiator, install it and check it was done right. Then you're done with it.

Well it's your car, so you'll be footing the bill. It's a 2nd hand car, there is no warranty on something someone else might or might not have done wrong.

there are many reasons for engine failures and i'm sure you will hear more and more as you continue to investigate.

ask yourself this: what answer will satisfy you and what are you going to do with that answer?

the two guys above have hit the nail on the head. read their posts a few times over. If your an enthusiast at the least then get in the know of your own machine and do all the work yourself or find a reputable shop to do all your work. I do all my own work from building it to driving it. The point being that half the fun is in doing it yourself, and what you cant do yourself, find someone to help or show you how to do it.

the forums have plenty of information for the basics.. though, the more difficult stuff has "experts attached"

    • Don't even try to run it on the stock ECU if you're going to have the boost controller bring boost above ~10 psi. I've already told you that. If you use the Nistune ECU, you will need to CAREFULLY read the available documentation for Neo tuning, and read some threads on the Nistune forums, to discover the various things you have to do to prevent the ECU from going bananas when the boost is too high. The is a table associated with th boost sensor that must be modified to prevent it from shitting the bed. This is just one of the things that you will need to do to the tune in Nistune, because the Neo turbo ECU will be expecting to see a number of things (such as the TCS) that are not there, and you have to block the DTCs on those. It is totally not surprising to me that you are having the problems that you are, but the solutions to these problems have been known for >15 years. So just get it done.
    • Hi. Sry iam not a mechanic and iam not at the car atm so i dont know 100% but they told they measure those and even try to change those. AFM they have two. Coils are new a they have my old one too. Plugs too. ECU...we have 25 NEO stock and Nistune 25 NEO.   But i dont know if any one those could be the problem and why/if/what can cause this, Only thing they did not check is fuel...but that walbro 255 is new(like 1,5 years)... That fuel pressure gauge idk...but i let them know Any suggestions?   EDIT: how can they know if it is like you say he ECU pull power when it reaches a specific boost level that is too high? Tha car has boost controler
    • Can you clarify what you mean by boost cut, do you mean it misfires both when under load (driving) and when stationary and out of gear? Or does the ECU pull power when it reaches a specific boost level that is too high (boost control issue)? Does it occur at idle with no throttle? When you say "the ECU is OK", what ECU is it and why do you think it is OK? Have you used the NEO ECU, and if so do you have a MAP sensor attached? Same for the AFM, why do you think it is OK? Do you have any way to put a fuel pressure gauge on it (even just a mechanical one between the fuel filter and fuel rail)?
