A fella I work with has a 17yr old son who just got his license. P plates etc...

The son (who loves my car and also has a mate with a 200sx), asked me which I thought would be a better choice as a first car for himself.

a) R32 GTR

b) 200sx

c) Evo 8

I figured I'd put it to you guys and see what y'all reckon.

I personally thought if these are his only choices then probably the 200sx due to potentially being cheaper for repairs (No Allwheel drive issues etc...)

But I still think he should just get a reliable old N/A shitbox to learn in now he has been granted a license.

As my Dad has always said... "First you get your L's, then your license, then you learn to drive." ;)

Thoughts?

Perhaps an R33 GTS-T if looking for Turbo jobby for $6k

A $4k magna is ideal for a 17yo to start with - Cheap, reliable, 3.5 and better & quicker than your Commie or Ford.

Edit: Oh and for $4k you will get a great one owner with service records (these cars are underated).

2nd Edit. I chose other. The cars you mentioned are high maintenance and hard to find a good one.

  • R32 GTR - $20k+
  • Evo8 - $25k+
  • 200sx - $?

I would recommend something a bit cheaper like a R31 or R32 gtst and have some fun tinkering around.

But if he wants to spend the money then an ADM S15 would be great for a reliable, Fun and also easy to insure car, also since its ADM it won't need to go through Dickson,

Since i was 16-19 have owned a MX73 cressida 2x KE corollas 2x Datsun 1200s, SS commodore , 2x r32 gtst , Lancer , Mirage, S15 ,S13 and currently my R32 GTR.

I must say the most fun i have had was in the cheapest and simplest cars (datsun 1200, R32 Gtst, and the KE corolla)

Wowsers, if he can afford a GTR or Evo straight off the bat then good on him! I'd be checking the insurance costs first though!

I'd probably say the 200sx because it would be cheaper to buy and *possibly* cheaper to insure being Aus delivered. (I was thinking S14 when I said cheaper to buy - just realised you probably mean S15).

Apparently he is going Halvies with his Dad to cover the cost. (not sure on Dad's opinion)

Insurance would be a killer for a Turbo + 17yrs old but he wants what he wants...

My first car was a 1985 Bluebird and it was Awesome. Drove that old girl for 11yrs.

R31 or an older Datto etc with dents and scratches is all a youngen needs I think, or even, dare I say it... a Pulsar. LOL! (Excel, Mirage, etc...)

lol...and if he is inexperienced he is almost certain to destroy it because it practically drives itself to insane speeds...

at least the tail happiness of a 200sx could scare him a little and therefor might teach him how to drive properly....

I'm sorry but the thought of an inexperienced 17 yr old in any of the cars listed chills me to the bone.....

I mean most kids cant handle a stock falcodore, let alone an actual performance car..

If kid is a granny driver or has prior experience/driver training MAYBE then I would consider letting him have a wrx at best...

First car + turbo. I would like to advise against it. But everyone is as good as a race car driver apparently.

I would get him to get a AWD if he gets a turbo. A lot more grip. Given his mate has a 200sx you can be sure they'll be fooling around.

Its all been said! too much for a new driver. A performance turbo is not something you learn to drive in.

My first car was a 78 Mazda Capella. rwd 1800, still had some fun, and didn't kill myself in the process.

Sounds like he may have more money than sense, so maybe the world would be better off.. jks. =P

id go a r33 gtst... being on my ls and having one, I love it!

and it dosnt matter how much power you have its about how you drive it...

but mind you my r33 is tail happy in the wet :( would love something with a little more grip!

I think he needs to consider insurance, reliability and cost of fuel

If he is into cars maybe a cruiser. Something low slow with big rims. Still fun and can he tinker with it, atleast till he learns to drive.

Not a bad little car. I drove one of them for about 20kms back in 1995 when I was a Detailer.

      Hi, i’m making a rb25det coil loom for Vag short coil. Can anybody tell me which Ecu signal wire belong to coil number 1 and 2,3,4,5,6? The connecting switch in above pic is 8 wire i think white is for +12v and black for earth.

      Its a 2002 vr-x four VQ25DET, silver. Coil overs, lowered, polished alloys and sport exhaust. Bit of a project, was sitting in a shed for a while but runs and drives great.

      I wasn’t able to replicate the sound anymore. It was a one time sound so maybe it was just coincidence but it was like small pebbles being dropped in a coke can.   should I try cleaning the MAF? It could be it’s functioning but dirty? I don’t know.

      Update 4: Hi all. The car drives again! Haven't driven for long, only to store it in the garage again, but the test drive was successful. The coolant and oil leaks seem to be fixed for now. Temps on the engine were also very good, while moving I never even saw 80C water during the approx. 30 minute drive. Ate up all the coolant in the reservoir though so will have to fill that even more when I go to the car next time. One thing that pisses me off is that the RPM gauge is still f**ked, I even resoldered the board twice and used copper paste on the silly screws that are used as connections. Next time I take it out I'll take apart the board and fit new components, I'll see if I can get a replacement IC for it.  I have an appointment set for 22nd of September for the engine tune to 370hp. Alignment also still needs to be done. My hope is that I can get all the legal stuff over with by the end of this season. Anyone of you have advice regarding intercoolers? Currently there is an APEXI core fitted, one of those weird hybrid ones, 600x270x76. I don't think it's bad but it's not new and now I still have the chance to change it now to legally include it in the paperwork. Only issue is that the only options that would arrive in time are a HKS Type R intercooler or generic Ebay spec intercoolers comparable to a JustJap one. Ideally I'd order a Plazmaman but it takes over a month to receive which would mean making the car legal has to wait until next season. Would love to hear some input on this. Same story for my injectors, the previous owner was a nunce and put ID 1050x on the engine. They work but are obviously not ideal at "normal" power levels. But I don't see a reason to change them unless the tuner says it's necessary. I read online before buying a different exhaust that the top secret style rear diffusers won't fit due to the size of the rear resonators. My buddy and I made it work by slightly "adjusting the shape" of the mounting bracket and making some spacers out of 3d print for the mounting bolts. Fits like a charm. Just putting this here in case someone has this problem. Even the hefty HKS Silent Hi Power rear can fits without hitting anything.
