Hey folks

Has anyone done a steering rack rebuild on R32 gtst or any of the skyline series themselves? From the steering rack diagram below it just looks like a couple of seals around the rack and maybe on or two around the pinion. Here is the diagram:

Can't seem to find tutorials anywhere but just want to know how difficult it is. So long as the rack itself isn't damaged, then my current options are:

A) Locally, the cheapest I can ask if I undo myself and take the rack in myself is $550-620 incl alignment. Testing and new rack ends, boots are included.

B) Send it to this guy: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/360505996690?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649 (get everything done, rack ends, boots, checked and sent back up) ~$400 including shipping. Then alignment later ($80). This way I can do other things to the car like changing some bushes, oil, get injectors checked out etc..while I'm waiting. Apparently has 2 day turnaround.

C) I can get a reseal kit for $110-130 from the guys from Option B and do it myself. New rack ends $70. New boots ~$30. Alignment = $80. = Roughly $310. Save about $170 compared to sending it down to option B.

Played with engines, brakes and whatnot but never power steering. Figured I would ask the community if it is worth it and if anyone out there has experience...at the moment option B seems the most reasonable since I can work on other aspects of the car whilst waiting since time = money. But always willing to take a bit of time to do things if it means saving and learning at the same time.

Check out suzukisuper I think it's called, in auburn nsw, they sell new(recoed) one for 32 gtr for 350$ exchanged I think, I'm currently looking for one for my gtr ,but leaning towards just getting from the wreckers or a part out. For around 100$

Yeah I've searched and one of the only places I could find, if you've got the cash then go for it, but I'm going to get one from the wreckers for less then half the price, and I get to keep my old one. So can buy a rebuild kit and play around with that, then if the used one f**ks up, you will have a rebuilt one ready to chuck in. And still costs the same if not less.

But agreed, not much info on the steering rack for them, I also need cv driveshafts, which this places sells for around 400 exchanged, n I think just jap is charging the same for 1 side exchanged, but probly using the same place to get supply from. Shit load of money for something that just gets a rebuild kit.

Hey guys, another much cheaper option (I found) was to fit in an r33 steering rack. Bolts straight Into the 32's mounts, power steering lines need very slight adjustment (bending) to fit. Also had to trim a little off the tierod and end, 10mm each per side

Cost me 30 bucks with a crossmember and lines off gumtree and has more steering lock

Tie rod ends are about 25dollars each, superpro bushes roughly 40 for the pair and still much cheaper

I was quoted 500 to have my 32 rack rebuilt or 250 for another from a wrecker

Thats sounds great, how hard is it to on jack stands?

    • After @Kinkstaah debacle, I'd never want to try and get it right 😛
    • The hood lines up with the fenders. The front bar doesn't perfectly line up with the fenders where the wheel arch is. You have to 'squeeze' the front bar 'in' as it wants to naturally flare out and be longer on the sides. There's a few threads where people notice this when they only swap a GTR style bumper and front bar. Unless you have genuine OEM items - you may be better served getting conversion kits. There are GTT bumpers to fit GTR hoods. There are GTR hoods (non genuine) to fit the GTT bracketry. MAY  
    • The real question is, on some of those wild roads they call highways, how many times did a farmer in an old ute from the early 2000s blaze past you over double lines?   Tassie is a wild and really cool place, and after doing a work related road trip there January of 24, I understand why Targa Tasmania is ran there, and is so tough to do well at! We had a brand new Camry Hybrid that handled quite nicely, and thankfully weren't in an old car, because cresting some of those hills in a 100kmh zone for it to suddenly be like "surprise f**kers, this is a recommended 30kmh hard right turn" wouldn't be pretty. We weren't racing the Camry around, but we weren't slouching in the bends either. But my lord those old farmers know their old clapped out utes, and those roads, as they were absolutely hammering it!   You're also super lucky to make it up to Mt Wellingtong this time of year. It's often road closed with snow/ice! Also, I hope you hit up Salamander Road in Hobart for some insanely good food (I highly recommend the dimly lit Irish pub for a Guiness Pie, or even the bangers and mash!!!)   How long did the Ferry take to get across? I want to do a road trip of Tas on my own time, but I get horrifically sea sick, and I don't want me on the Ferry, just the car 😛
