i 'm looking at importing a silvia S13 k 1988 or 1989 with the 15 year + law before it runs out

Everyone says importing is the best way to go i been looking around it seem all good

I live in NSW australia

J-Spec is ok but they hit you 2 times with Agent fee

Agent's fee in Japan (FOB charges) 90000 Yen

Our agency fee $1000

Hi Scott,

an 89 silvia k's is a great first car. :) Just try and get one in as decent condition as possible so that you can get the most out of the car. The CA18DET responds very well to mods and you can safely do a lot of work on an older car like this without worrying too much about breaking stuff. A good first DIY mod might be an air pod or something.

Whats the price difference between an 89 silvia k's and an r32 gtst?

silvia=8k, r32gtst=12k ?

silvia is about 6000 to 7000 and skyline is like 9000 to 11000 but no one will touch me with a skyline i am lucky if i can get insurance with the Silvia i'll ring J-Spec up and talk to them about it going to wait like a Month want a little more Cash there is some things i want to do to it when i get it

i went for a loan yesterday of $4500 and i have $3000 =$7500

my friends dad is selling his i going to buy it if it is all good when i get it looked over it is a 1991 2L non turbo S13 Q SR20 $7000 on it hear he will take $6500

i was thinking $6300 or $6400

how much will it cost to get it into my name with the RTA it has 12 months rego

not bad for someone that just turned 16 one month ago

no turbo cause i am 16 i get one later want to get on with insurances first

Only one place wound insure me cause i am 16 and that was Just Cars and it was $535 for 3rd PP

the 1991 sr20 sounds like a much better idea. I'm not exactly sure of the stamp duty but its around 5% of purchase value so if you pay 6500, rego will cost about $300.

Also I'm not sure what type of insurance you are looking for but you should consider thrid party, fire and theft if you can get it instead of full comprehensive. It covers pretty much everything except your damage to your car if you are at fault

Check up on the www.nissansilvia.com website.. but as it may be possible to buy one for that price in Japan, then you have to pay all the on road costs etc, and will end up costing you a bit more. If i were you, i would save and buy a silvia in aust for about 7-10 which is already complianced etc.

yeah there are so many Silvias around, I'd try finding one already here so you can check it out before you buy..

try the trading post online, and your Sat paper each weekend....something will come up!

the insurance in your name will be a good thing...you can build up a nice NCB and then insurance will be heaps cheaper if you want to get a turbo line later! :)

I would highly recommend buying in Australia if you are counting every dollar. So often cars arrive with some minor probs that all add to the cost (castor rods leaking fluid for example) which need to be fixed for the RWC. Plus if you import a 15 Year Old car at present, you will need to get the AC regassed, whereas one already here wont have to have had it drained. So if you buy one here which already has RWC, rego etc you can be more confident at what the total amount you will need to budget for. Plus the wait for the car once its paid for is a killer. Although that first trip to the docks is a very special moment between man and machine : )

Have you thought about getting a turbo auto, you can save alot of money this way, and in an NA Silvs you will be begging for more power. At least that way you could always do a manual conversion down the track, whereas if you had a NA its not worth a turbo conversion in most cases. Buying a 1.8 will also save you money, and they are cheaper to modify due to the ECU being tuneable.

As mentioned, www.nissansilvia.com would answer your questions about S13s better than SAU.

Skylines, Silvs (and prob alot of other Nissans I assume) have a jelly, goey liquid inside the factory castor rods rubber bush. From what I have heard this is to aid vibration/sound or something along those lines. The downside is that they inevitably leak when the rubber cracks, often at an early age.

Of course, if the car has adjustable castor/tension rods then this would not be a concern : )

    • Drain it. I got official Matic D but you can get whatever is listed as Matic D compatible.
    • Thanks guys,  Yeah I should at least have them dynoed, at least then I know what I've got as a starting point.  The springs on these are hard as rocks. I vaguely remember Russman saying he was going to sell the shocks to me with the rocks fitted, as he was keeping the softer springs for his new setup.  I didn't click at the time but of course that was to let me know the shock/spring wouldn't be matched.  I also remember pricing up new springs around 2014-15, but, house, money etc. it never happened. So that was another reason to have them rebuilt. I have rebuilt the forks on many motorcycles so I think I could handle the seals on these easily enough, but getting the valving right would be a rabbit hole I cbf exploring.  Duncan, interesting to hear RP was tuning these back then. I might give them a call.  In the mean time I have been busy fitting sway bars. The Whiteline rear sway bar I purchased 15 years ago finally got fitted, along with the Whiteline front bar that showed up last week. Just waiting on new links for the front sway bar to finish that off.  And my spare set of advan AVS VS5's should be back from the powder coaters in a Pearl White finish sometime this week, with a set of Hankook RS4's lined up for fitting.  And then I just have all the suspension bushes to do. A comprehensive kit is on the way... Lots to do before the Ararat hill climb. Cheers guys 🍻

I’m glad folks in the US have gotten past the FnF and are buying real cool cars like the 260RS I was with a bunch of mates in Portland about a year ago and spotted a green Stagea (just a regular 2.5T AWD) parked about 2 blocks away and they were like “a what?” So I made a bet with them for a round of beers and said “ok one of you run down there and tell me if the steering wheel is on the correct side” 5 mins later the American comes trudging back up the hill and goes “he’s right guys. Ok what beer do you want?”
