Hello

I have a r32 gts-t with pod, fmic return flow, full 3 inch turbo back exhaust with a split turbo down pipe, sports cat, after market blow off valve, coil packs moved to the outside of the engine next to the wind shield wiper motor with some kind of aftermarket ignition wires connecting them and the spark plugs( this was done by the previous owner), Nismo 2 Way LSD and now a electronic boost controller.

Besides getting a bigger turbo, metal head gasket, bigger injectors and higher flowing fuel pump, adjustable cam gears, after market cams, and a tune, what else can I do to increase the performance of this car? Engine wise or otherwise?

I want to keep up with Toyota MK IIs, Toyota Crowns, WRX STI, EVOs, Cameros, Chargers, Challangers and 370 Zs.

8" wide wheels, sticky tyres, teflon brake lines, BMC stopper, better pads, new brake fluid, full set of new suspension bushes, adjustable caster rods, HICAS delete.

I have the hiscas delete, I am looking into Federals for the sticky tyres, I am looking into the steel brake lines, had to change the front upper arms to Nismo, my car failed inspection because a stock arm was bad. Nissan Japan wide was out of stock upper arms and they said that the Nismo bushing would not fit stock arms. So I ordered the Nismo upper arms. I am going to put Nismo suspension on. I have the rear upper arms also. So buying all of the arms slowly.

My shocks are HKS Hypermax IIIs. Are adjustable caster rods the same as tie rod ends(pillow ball ends)? If so I dont want to put aftermarket on again. My first r32 gts-t I put aftermarket adjustable ones on and it was great for cornering but the ride sucked. Its was too hard.

I am looking into the BMC stopper also.

I put the metal subframe bushing spacers on the whole rear subframe to help until I get the new bushings from Nismo.

8" tires would be 225's? I have 214 17 45 on the front and 225( or 235) 17 45 on the back. I think I have AA rated tires on front and back. They are good brands. But I am going for the Federals.

Caster rods are the rods that run forward from the (front) lower control arms to the front ends of the chassis rails. They control the fore-aft motion of the front suspension (ie there should be none!). When they are not adjustable (stock) they do not allow you to adjust caster - they just set it at whatever the factory decided was good +/- the huge amount of slop provided by the OEM hydrolastic bushes. Adjustable caster rods (which would have rose joints on the front end, yes) are much much better. They allow you to add a little extra caster (always desirable) and they replace the sloppy bush with a nice hard metal joint. Because of where they are they don't actually take a lot of the ride load, so they don't contribute to vibration and harshness. I use them. I would not put rose jointed suspension arms anywhere else on a road car though.

8" wide wheels means 8" wide wheels. Not tyres. The tyres you then put on thos wheels are somewhat up to you, especially depending on whether you choose 16", 17" or 18" wheels. 16x8 is same size as R32 GTR and works well with the standard GTR tyre size of 225/50-16. 17x8 is same as R32 GTR Vspec and works well with 235/45-17. These are both alomst exactly the same rolling diameter as the original GTSt size (205/55-16).

Yes the RSR, the sticky ones.

Oh ok I understand now. How about the Nismo caster arms? If I do put adjusting I can only go with IKEYA formula, because they are the only aftermarket suspension parts company that is legal for road use besides Nismo.

So for the 17x8 the 235/45-17 can fit on the front or is this the back?

Ikeya Formula caster rods will be perfect. I wouldn't use the Nismo ones. They're just a version of the OEM one effectively.

17x8 and 235/45-17 will fit all the way around the car. You do not want smaller tyres at the front of an R32 anyway. R32s tend to like to understeer. You need all the tyre you can get at both ends.

I think you will find that the main issue that people are having with your many threads is that, whilst they are questions that YOU have never asked here before, they are in fact questions that have been asked on here MANY times before. As such, the answers already exist in written form that you can read if you'd just search.

In addition, you keep coming back talking about cams and cam gears and so on in the new threads, despite having been told in previous threads that cams will not help you.

Where are you? Canada?

It would not be hard to keep up with Chargers and Challengers, lol. Most are V6s, most of the V8 ones are R/Ts which are 4000lb cars with 375 crank hp and 5 speed auto trans. Modded STIs or stock?

If you want to keep up with those cars you might be able to do it with your mods now + powerfc and boost controller. However you probably will be needing a turbo upgrade like you said you are going to get. I don't see what you need to ask here, everything is obvious. Brakes, tires, suspension, etc you have everything else. IDK what laws are in Japan but on my car in the US I have 235/45/17 f and 255/40/17 r setup on Kumho Ecsta XS tires which most local autocross people use and they are exellent and inexpensive. Only needed to roll the rear.

But too expensive for the conversion here in Japan. Plus the yearly taxes involved the registration fee. Better to put a 26 if going to pay the money.

You live in Japan as a citizen or english teacher or are you like some American in the military or something? I wouldn't own this car if I lived in Japan and wasn't in the US military, the amount you have to pay isn't worth what you get in a RB20 car as there are many many many better options. Unless you are american and want to bring it back with you you have picked the wrong car to make massive power and drag race new Camaros and Mustangs.

    • My first car was a HG. I'm very familiar with them. A mild cam upgrade is a good idea. The 186 is a very flexible engine - meaning it has good torque from down low. You can give up a little torque down low for quite a lot more excitement in the mid range, and a bit more up top - but they are not exactly a rev monster. You need to upgrade valve springs at the minimum. For a bigger cam, you'd want to make sure it wasn't still running the original fibre cam gear. That would be unlikely, given that most of them shat themselves in the 70s and 80s, but still within the realms of possibility. Metal cam gear required. Carbies are a huge issue. The classic upgrade was always a Holley 350, which works, but is usually pretty bad for fuel consumption. The 186S had a 2 barrel Stromberg on it that was very similar to the one on the 253, and is a reasonable thing if you can find one, and find someone to help you get it set up (which is the same issue with setting up a 350 to work nice). The more classic upgrade was twin sidedraught CD type carbs, or triples of same, or triple Webers. The XU-1 triple Webers being the best example. You can still buy all this stuff new, I think, but it's a lot of coin to drop. And then the people able to set them up are getting fewer and further in between. There's still some, but it used to be everyone's** dad and uncle could do it. **Not everyone's! But a lot. All in all, I wouldn't get too carried away with the engine. Anything you do to it without a full rebuild for power and revs will only make it slightly faster. I am all in favour of a complete teardown rebuild, with nice rods and pistons, 10 or 1.5:1 compression, and a clean port job with at least a big enough cam to run 98 with that compression, if not bigger. And if I did that to a dirty old red motor, I'd want to inject it too, which I'd struggle to fight against the devil on my shoulder that would argue for ITBs and trumpets. But the bills would start to mount up, and it will still never make stupid power. OK, a few people still know how to build absolutely mental red motors, courtesy of the work that went into HQ racing and modern knowledge being applied. But even a 300HP red motor is no match for an RB20 with a TD06. So you have to decide what it's worth to you. I'd just put a set of 6>2>1 extractors, a 2.5" exhaust and an electronic ignition conversion/dizzy on it and just run the old girl like the fairly slow old girl that she really is.
    • Thank you so much for the comments.  This is very interesting and gives me some great ideas to think about. Keen to keep it simple and relatively classic looking. That said, i am not too worried about staying 100% period correct.  A little extra performance and relatively good (or improved) economy is just what i am looking for. Ill be keeping any parts i swap out so if i get nostalgic i can always swap it all back in.  Right now just trying to get some good ideas from people in the know (I still have a lot to learn in this space).     • Wrt the engine, you're very much limited by 'production quality' as to how much extra power you can extract from them (I'm talking i6 red-motor) -- a lot here depends on how 'authentic' or 'period correct' you want the modifications to be... ...I'm too old... <grin>...the first true performance engine Holden made, was in the HD/HR models ~ this was the 'X2' performance pack...it came with twin downdraft strombergs on an otherwise unimproved intake manifold, with a two piece exhaust manifold (reckoned to be as good as extractors)... ....these engines were built upon the '179HP' cylinder block, which included extra webbing in the casting to make it stronger and less susceptible to block distortion... The next performance i6 came out with the HK Monaro (also found it's way into the LJ GTR Torana ... the car I wish I hadn't sold)...it had pretty much the same manifold setup, but was built against the '186S' block...this block retained all the extra webbing of the 179HP block, but added a forged steel crankshaft (instead of the stock cast crankshaft), because it was possible to snap the crank... ...apart from the inherent weaknesses in the stock (cast crank) blocks, the next limiting factor is the cylinder head porting & combustion chamber design, and the actual valve sizes. Back in the day, you could buy a 'yella terra' cylinder head (from stage 1 to stage 5 gradients), and this was the way to get serious power out of them -- with the extra breathing of these heads, you could fit a triple SU or DCOE Weber setup... ...obviously, these mods were a waste of time on a stock cylinder head/camshaft grind. My housemate rebuilt the i6 in his VH dunnydore about 6 months back -- this is a 186S block with the 12port 2850 blue motor head and intake/exhaust manifolds, with a dual throat Weber off an XF Falcon mounted on an adapter plate ; it's not a bad makeup...got more torque & fuel economy just light-footing it about on the first throat, but stand on it and it makes more giddy-up than the standard 2850 blue motor that it replaced. Personal note: I'd just fit an RB30 and be done it it 😃  
    • Thanks for sharing. That's a great video! My buddy is doing the same thing on his build (S chassis struts and towers). He's building an S14 with billet RB30 shooting for 2000whp... a race car with a TH400 just like this video. For a road car I just couldn't go this route as the strut has to be almost vertical and the caster is not going to pivot correctly (let alone camber gain). You think the R32 frontend is bad, wait till you put a MacPherson strut on without modeling it all in Solidworks to check geometry. I'm not saying it's a bad way to do it but I'd be really curious to see how it affects the geometry.
