deleting the vct oil feed passage on the bottom of the head to build a 25/30 without running an external feed to the vct starves the front journal of oil, might work ok for a while as the heads get a stupid amount of oil up there, yet its not good for the cam, the way to fit this is to take out the brass plug from behind the cam gear, and cut it off at the part where it things out before getting larger again, and then reinstall it, this allows the oil galery to goto the front of the head, if you dont do this the oil galary is blocked before the front journal.

Back on this discussion, I forgot to post my findings... I attempted to remove that brass fitting and the prick wouldn't come out.

As a move of desperation, I bought an oil squirting bottle thingy and pumped oil down those two holes on the front journal and it pushed oil into the main oil gallery along the side of the head. Not sure why it worked but as I was able to prove to myself that oil traveled straight through, I decided not to modify that brass fitting!

It's a very strange and debatable issue and I believe the best way to overcome it is to confirm using an oil can whether or not oil travels to that front cam journal.

When you say the main gallery you mean it was comming out the other cam journals and such? If not then where. As I've had one home built rb30 come into my shop with the front cam journal completely stuffed and he hadn't done that mod when building it, and on the 3 I've done I've cut it down and havnt had any issue. I'll need to look into it more on the next one I build

I pumped oil into the front feed and oil went though into the oil gallery. Refer to the photo, if you look closely you'll notice the oil.

I was so confused because Ben managed to convince me that I needed to do that mod...

Guys also forgot to mention, that my mechanic who also builds engine had a spare rb25det head in his workshop and that head wouldn't allow oil to go through that passage when I attempted the same test! It is such a confusing, yet concerning matter!

So there are differmves with the heads!

As Scott said he has seen, my engine builder has seen it yet people say its no worries, and now you have proven in your case your head is fine......

Good on you for checking as it could have ended badly, now it has let others know that the heads are different somehow!

My head definitely a series 1 rb25det head... The engine builder had no idea what type of head he had, said it was a drop off from a few years ago.

It's such a weird topic because sometimes it works out for people and sometimes it doesn't. I believe ultimately all people should check with an oil can. According to my engine builder guy, if the mod isn't needed then it shouldn't be done as the last thing an rb head needs is more oil to it!

I attempted this for hours man and the piece of shit wouldn't come out... Snapped a bolt in there and then tried using a tap bit and even snapped that in there. That was the point I raged and decided to test it for myself...

    • Which solenoid? Why was it changed? Again, why was this done? ...well, these wear..but ultimately, why was it changed? Did you reset the idle voltage level after fitment? I'm just a tad confused ~ the flash code doesn't allude to these items being faulty, so in my mind the only reason to change these things, would be some drive-ability issue....and if that's the case, what was the problem? Those questions aside, check if the dropping resistor is OK ...should be 11~14 ohms (TCU doesn't throw a flash code for this) ~ also, these TCU designs have full time power (to keep fault code RAM alive), and I think that'll throw a logic code (as opposed to the 10 hardware codes), if that power is missing (or the ram has gone bad in the TCU, which you can check..but that's another story here perhaps).
    • Question for people who "know stuff" I am looking at doing the new intake like the one in the picture (the pictured is designed for the OEM TB and intake plenum), this design has the filter behind the front bar, but, the filter sits where the OEM duct heads into the front bar, and the standard aperture when the OEM ducting is removed allows the filter to pulled back out of the front bar into the engine bay for servicing, a simple blanking plate is used to seal the aperture behind the filter This will require a 45° silicone hose from the TB, like the alloy pipe that is currently there, to another 45° silicone hose to get a straight run to the aperture in the front bar Question: how will it effect the tune if I move the MAF about 100-150mm forward, the red is around where my MAF is currently, and the green would be where it would end up Like this This is the hole the filter goes through  Ends up like this LOL..Cheers    
    • Despite the level up question, actually I do know what that is....it is a pressure sender wire.  So check out around the oil filter for an oil pressure sender, or maybe fuel pressure near the filter or on the engine. Possibly but less likely coolant pressure sensor because they tend to be combined temp/pressure senders if you have one. Could also be brake pressure (in a brake line somewhere pre ABS) but maybe I'm the only one that has that on a skyline.
    • Pull codes via the self-diagnosis procedure. As far as I can tell this is just a sign of transmission issues but not a code unto itself.
    • Hi All, putting the engine back together and everything is perfect except have this plug left over.. any ideas what it is for and where it goes? Is on cold side under the intake plenum *note not a stock plug, as everything has been modified Cheers
