I just bought a 2006 V36 250GT here in Christchurch, NZ. It's actually a temporary car while I wait for an ideal Skyline Crossover (370GT) with allt he right specs to become available.

After only a couple of days however, I really like the 250GT. it's comfortable, quiet, looks great and decent on fuel.

I asked the dealer to make sure that it had two smartkeys, and he said it had one plus a remote starter. In an email confirming the sale I asked the following.

"Confirmation that remote starter works as second smart key (as a backup in case key is lost)"

And he replied

"Ricky is working on the spare key and it is work" (Sic)

When I picked up the car, he demonstrated the remote starter (pictured below), starting the car, but it was on the same keyring as the genuine Smartkey.

Only when I got home and took the remote starter off thte keyring to put in a safe did I test it while out of range of the smartkey, and sure enough, it didn't work. When I got in the car and tried to start it (with the pushbutton) the dash displayed the "no key" notification.

I've found that Nissan can supply a genuine additional Smartkey for $450 which all things considered, isn't too bad - however a couple of questions for the experts here...

Should the remote starter be able to function as a key for the vehicle all on it's own?

With the right consult cable and a smartkey from Ebay, should I be able to program the car to accept the new key myself? (I have the small metal tag with a 5 digit PIN on it "0xxxx"). I have read the long threads on here but I'm afraid I didn't see a clear conclusion apart from it was easier to find a dealer that knew what to do.

Hi Neil,

Welcome to the forum.. i also have a Nissan remote starter and it is, unfortuately, as it says, a remote starter. On mine it is also for the alarm, but it will not allow me to start the car as normal. Lives in the draw with the rest of the import car owner stuff that never gets used...

  • 3 weeks later...

That's pretty average. So one remote for starting the vehicle remotely and another for actually starting the vehicle whilst occupied? Seems a bit silly of them not to combine the functionality in the remote starter keyfob.

But then again, I have my smart key and Viper alarm remote on my keyring so I guess it's the same thing. :P

Thanks for the confirmation people... By way of followup I asked the dealer I bought the car form (politely) how to use the remote starter as a key (before I read the replies here) and he said he'd look into and call me back.

He did call me back the next day, apologised for putting me wrong initially and said he'd booked me in with a local Nissan dealer to get a new smartkey supplied and coded at his cost. Very impressed. Absolutely no BS from the seller at all.

Still liking the car but it's only a temporary one until I find the perfect Skyline Crossover (370GT)... There's not enough of them around and almost none have the technology pack (Cruise, LDW/LDP, IBA, Around view monitor etc)

Cheers - N

    • After using a protractor for an actually accurate assessment of what is required,  and by NOT using my uncalibrated eyeball I worked out I need a 25° silicone bend from the TB ro the MAF, but, my choice was either a 30° or a 23° (23° is a weird spec), so I grabbed the 23° one from Raceworks I also grabbed 1mtr of 3" straight from Just Jap, I needed 350mm, but they only had 300mm, or 1mtr lengths....meh Also ordered a 1/2" hose bulkhead fitting from fleabay, this has a smoothish mushroom looking head (they are designed for below the water line of boats) that will fit inside the bend, the hose bit and threaded bit looks to long, but nothing that a hacksaw cannot fix if required, the hose will then just get jamed on the threaded bit up to the retaining nut Fingers crossed and the unsightly amount of hose clamps will be reduced down to 4 once all the parts arrive
    • Oil change does not trigger code 21. Code 21 is for coilpacks primary side connection. You can try to clear the code with a battery disconnect, hold down the brake pedal to drain capacitors through the brake lights with the ignition on for 10-15 seconds before you reconnect the battery. I have seen R35 coil conversion permanently cause this code with no ill effects so it might be the resistance it wants to see isn't quite right on one or more coilpacks. Could be inside the ECU, could be the harness, could be a coil. You can test it all if you want or just ignore until the car actually starts misfiring.
    • I forgot you have a Nistune ECU. Use Nistune to do all the tests I mentioned instead of faffing with 30+ year old electrical connectors. You can read MAF volts off that too, there are reference values in the service manual to tell you roughly what it should be in different conditions.
    • No. I think it might be the AFM. Hence the use of the terms "swaptronics", which implies the use of swapping out electronics for the purpose of diagnosis. It's about the only way to prove that a small/niggling/whatever problem with an AFM or a CAS or similar is actually caused by that AFM/CAS/whatever. A known good item swapped in that still gives the same problem is likely to be caused somewhere else. They're all the same. Spraying AFMs with cleaner is an each way bet between cleaning it and f**king it.
    • Oh wow! This might actually work amazingly. Do you know the ratio of the diff? I was told the only thing you need to make sure of is if the front & rear diff ratios are the same. Ours is a 4.083 Thanks!
