hi all,

i want to get my 17s restored and colored white... they've got some scrapes on the outer rim but no dents... i'll be grateful for recommendations of reasonably priced repairers here in syd... i want to get them powder coated white and i was quoted $300 just for that but the wheels will have to be repaired beforehand... many wheel repairers finish in 2pak but i'm not sure about powder coating... i've rung a couple of places up and they want charge $150 a corner repaired and sprayed...

cheers,

louis

alright, here's a lil update on the market research from this morning...

even though i was able to describe the extent of damage (and hence repair needed), many places were unwilling to give a quote and said i'll have to bring them in... hell, it's just kerb scruff on the outer rim from parking too close (these are 2nd hand b4 anyone starts about my ability to park properly :) )... of the places that were willing to quote for my case,

a. magman: between $120-$150 finished in 2pak

aluminium engineering $30-$40 repair w/o finish

circle track $85 avg w/o finish

virgin $180 finished in 2pak

as my intention was to get them repaired and then powdercoated, my choice is to send them to aluminium engineering for the repairs... drop em off in the morning they'll be ready in the arvo...

for the powdercoating bit, if anyone's interested, i plan to use precision coating, seven hills 96247788... they charge $77 a wheel... this was a recommendation from the wrx list, so at least someone's seen their work and is pleased with it...

ok, it's now time for me to go drop em wheels off at brookvale...

powder coating is not matt, it's glossy... if i'm not wrong, the metal is heated to a high temperature and the powder is applied... someone please correct me if i'm wrong... u know ur aluminium window frames? the white ones are powder coated... the bronze ones are anodized...

well yeah total repair bill is gonna be about $500... aluminium engineering is charging me $190 to fix em all up then i'll take them to precision for the powdercoating... but these are avs wheels i bought off dennis (he bought them f**ked) so they're worth repairing... stay away from the kerb and i reckon i'll still be able to sell them when i'm done with them...

picked the wheels up from aluminium engineering this afternoon and i'm happy with the repair job... dropped them off straight at precision coating for the blasting and coating in dulux pearl white and should be ready mid next week... will borrow a digicam when that's all done...

uhoh... ;) coating place rang to inform me that the blasting has taken a lump of filler out from one of the wheels... :eek1: can't coat over filler they say... may have to go with spray painting if the hole looks obvious... anyone know anywhere that'll spray wheels with good strong paint for reasonable $$$?

cheers,

louis

went ahead with powder coating despite the slight marking on one wheel (assigned to the front left position) the grooves are noticeable but not unsightly so that didn't bother me... i just have an unexplainable preference for powder coating over spray painting... that said, if anyone wants to powder coat stuff, these guys get my thumbs up :D

mag wheel repairs and refinishing saga *the end*

Hey lou15x, just wanted to ask you how many wheels did u actually get repaired, and also how damaged were they? That Aluminimum engineering place sounds good, i had a quote of $190 to repair one wheel! And that was without any painting/powdercoating. When they powerdercoat something, they electrically charge up the powder and spray it on the item (makes it stick), then they bake it. Very nice and hard wearing finish.

Thanks.
