Hello Everyone,

Figured id introduce myself and make a thread of my car and progress while in ownership. I have always wanted to have a BNR34 but never thought it would my achievable due to living in the states and knowing prices would be sky high. I ended you moving to Japan due to work for a 5year term/tour and a year later after being in Japan I drove up to Chiba Prefecture from Yamaguchi Prefecture (14hr drive) to TopRank to look and decided to make the purchase. I am glad that i did because it felt like overnight the prices shot up to 100k+. Before delivery i had TopRank perform timing belt, water pump, and pulley job since it was due so that was a little bonus before getting the vehicle.

I come from Subies when i was in the States so im used to everything you do to a car needs a tune haha. Im new to the platform of Skyline Gtrs but i have been learning along the way. The R34 GTR is pretty much stock besides a trust catback exhaust and some no name coilovers that were on the car ( these were very harsh ). It is also on the higher KM end (216,000 KM) but it overall in decent condition with minimal rust but some is expected being a 20yr car. Since ownership I have replaced a number of maintenance items and the coilovers to HKS Hypermax GT IV 20specs and right after the ride was a lot better.

Car finally arrives from TopRank in Chiba Prefecture around October 2020 (Purchased the car around Aug/Sep2020) and overcome by happiness haha. One of the 1st things that I did was fix the MFD screen, there is a thread here on SAU that walks you through and it was a challenge specially getting the film to lay down correctly. Overall i was happy since it only costed like $20-30 and couple hours of my time but i still want to buy one from one of the guys that sells them for like $250 for a spare. You can see its not 100% perfect but it is better than it was before.

Soon after the small MFD fix i installed the HKS Hypermax GT IV 20specs at the hobby shop on base and soon after i took a nice evening shot in front of the house im living in during my stay in Japan. I also changed out the amber lights for the clear Nismo option and I believe it makes the car look better. Also got a quick photo with the Kentai Bridge in the background.

One of the last things i did with the car before being station in the middle of the ocean for 6months was go to Takata Circuit in Hiroshima Prefecture and while doing so i accidently crashed a shops reserved day but they were cool with it and let me continue on around the track. They had one of their members take photos and he was kind enough to snap a few of my car and send them to me which surprised me. I have ordered a few things while i have been in the middle of the ocean so the car is going get few upgrades/changes when i get back. I have also done a few interior changes but didnt think i would post those photos. Hope this isnt to much for a 1st thread haha.

Thank you. I try to enjoy the car when im able to, I'm usually gone 6months since moving to japan for work so it usually doesnt seem like im there very long to do anything lol. But i ordered few goodies for the car thats waiting for me at a co-workers house and will be swapping to the car once im home but a couple i will be waiting on since they are back-ordered.

Yeah its in good condition even tho it has higher Kms but they need love to right? haha.

Congrats! Very nice!

To get the car reliable and fun in the long run I always recommend my friends to get these items:

  1. a proper standalone ECU, ditch the external boost controller, then a proper tune
  2. Bosch EV14 Injectors
  3. aftermarket crank pulley

Completely agree with the first two but No. 3 is a strange one to say is a must have? At those km's I'd think about getting a brand new OEM crank pulley on there, but probably only if the motor was coming out for any reason. It would be a long list before crank pulley came up for me!

Im already putting parts together for a motor rebuild hopefully by this time next year or not far from it. Since the car will be coming back with me to the States I plan on changing the fuel injectors, coil packs, and AFM to R35s for ease of maintenance instead of chasing down Oem parts if they were to go bad (mainly for the coil packs and AFM's). Thought that since Nismo has them in the RTune package that it should be okay. Dont plan on going big with the build I would be happy in the realm of 400-500hp.

The ECU i gotta figure out depending on the tuner in Japan and whos close to me in Yamaguchi. There is a few shops nearby but hoping to get an ECU thats good for Japan and US tuners since i will be going from 98 to 93 in gas and would rather not have to purchase 2 different ECU's haha.

For the Crank pulley i would probably stick to OEM or one of the ATI ones that i seen HKS add to their catalog for the RB26s. For my application I think the OEM would probably suit my needs better not 100% sure. Being new to the platform im still learning bits here and there.

    • The fab work can be as simple as a couple of silicon hoses and clamps to the factory piping.
    • Just sounds like either way you need to do some fab work to get everything to fit, so why limit yourself at that point? If the GCG high flow option is zero effort in and out swap though I'd probably do that. It's almost certainly lowest risk, lowest cost, etc. The HKS GTIII-RS option that Kapr mentioned is laughably expensive for what it is, they charge the exact same for two turbos on the RB26 so their margins are off the charts on that thing.
    • Intake manifold is not a part of the issue. The turbo bolts to the exhaust manifold. That is easy. But close your eyes and picture the physical situation. That is a T3 flange on the manifold and a T3 flange on the turbo. As long as any new turbo has a T3 flange on the exhaust housing, that exhaust housing will bolt to the exhaust manifold. This places the exhaust housing in the same place as the stock one. But now move your mental attention a little further forward. The location of the compressor housing is set by the length of the turbo's core. The stock turbo had a long core. Let's say that it is..... 100mm long. So that would place the compressor housing 100mm forward of the exhaust housing. But a highflow, might well have a centre core that is shorter. Let's say that it is only 70mm long. Now the compressor housing will be 30mm further back in the engine bay than the stock one. This DOES move the turbo's compressor outlet backwards. It also moves the compressor's inlet backwards. You will very likely have to do some work to both the inlet and outlet piping to make everything connect again. I am not say this to make it out to be a bigger deal than it is. I am just pointing out that "bolt on" is sometimes not quite bolt on. The highflow from GCG that Murray linked above (https://gcg.com.au/turbo-charger-upgrade-skyline-gtst-2iu-xtrgts-s1.html ) uses a core that is the same length as the stock core, and so does not require this extra work. It will look very much like the stock turbo. No-one uses GTR turbos of any flavour (stock, or aftermarket) in a single turbo application on RB20/25. It's not a thing. Yes, people have been putting on GT3076, GTX3076 (and bigger and smaller versions of those) and G30s (of various sizes) onto RB20/25 since forever. But these are not "bolt on". Everything except the 4 bolts to the exhaust manifold change with these. And genuine Garretts are expensive. Non-gen, like Pulsar, etc, are cheaper, variously as good or nearly as good. But still not bolt on. No-one in the right mind would pay for an HKS turbo. Not in this modern day and age. Well, yes, the GCG highflow. You could ask HG what he can do to make the compressor housing sit in the original location. There are surely others doing highflows around the world. And some of the eBay/Temu ones (as reported by Dose) work and don't die. Bit of a lottery though. I would send your turbo to GCG (here in Oz) to be highflowed if you want a trivial no-extra-work option. But seriously, the work required to change inlet and outlet piping is not that hard. That's a boost control problem, not a turbo problem.
    • Thank you all for the replys 🙂 I know that intake would be different but that is one pipe at it is not that hard to get(custom one). I meant mainly bolt to the stock manifold and the turbo elbow. I looked and many sites/forums but they are just "old" with some old HKS turbos from GT-R i guess? What about some Garrets?  Or any other turbo? Is there even a turbo which i can just bolt on? 😄 And yeah i know about that new HKS but that is like 2000k USD without taxes/shipping in here   Iam getting a touch up tune but my "problem" is that on the "not" hot day iam getting peaks around 0,9 bar...and when it was around 15 Celsious i saw peak around 1 bar which is just too much for stock turbo. And of course turbo is old and i like to get some new one for a piece of mind 🙂
    • I'm working on the assumption that our friend Jasmine here is a Russian (or, possibly Ukrainian) spammer/spambot, based purely on the number of such that I have been having to neuter in the last few weeks. IP address for the OP above was in WA. But that could have been via VPN. Posting at quarter to 4 in the morning is a good sign of being from somewhere in Europe. The last Jasmine that I kicked in the cooch was IP addressed in Ukraine. Even that could have been via VPN, and the bitchbot could have been from Russia, Serbia, China or anywhere. Regardless, was a spambot, so I killed it with fire. The fact that our new friend Jasmine here did not respond in any way to my tart query strongly suggests to me that this OP was just the establishment phase of a user able to be activated for spamming in a week, or 3 or 10.
