My renewal just came through for full comp on my car so I thought I'd just have a bit of a look around & compare the price (dropped $400!) with other insurers. I like my premium but not the excesses nor some of the policy wording (most policies are probably the same though).

Some have said go with Shannons but they said to me just then that they don't insure cars like mine for everyday use in Sydney....

Do they or don't they? Who else is there?

Get insured with Just Cars...then you know where you stand in the event of a claim, I've had nothing but excellent dealings with them.

Some clown drove into my car and damaged the front..it was repaired in less than 2 weeks, no problems and plenty of contact from JustCars end to make sure I knew where the claim was up to, and a follow up call to make sure I was happy with the repair.

Some companies would rather spit on you!

shannons is very good too.

when some tool in a BM rammed me off the road, and tried to pass it off as my fault (no witnesses at 11pm wed night), they immediately dismissed the idea it was my fault over the phone after I gave them the complete story and had an accessor come out in a few days to look at the damage and check out my quotes (choice of repairer).

They were always helpful over the phone...

Thay also have the cheapest excess i know of.... a flat rate of $600, no extra for theft, etc...

Just cars have cheap premiums, but their excess was double and tripple (depending on what type of claim).

what is it about the wording???

what is the excess they have given you? You are 25, so I thought you should be fine...

yep they said the same to me, they won't insure a skyline used daily in sydney, reglardless of driving history, car club membership etc.

If you already have something with them they seem to be OK with it though

So to recap...

Duncan got the same treatment as I did, where as a couple of you didn't. But... Zahos is in Melbourne & 4door is in Adelaide which could have quite a bit to do with things.

Either they have something against Sydney, in particular my suburb, or they just don't want NEW business with import drivers.

My basic excess is $1000 plus $1000 if stolen or $2000(!!!) for single car accident. Plus I'm not sure what my car's official 'market value' is atm.

sydney is sydney.. everything is a rip off :(

Shannons I remember didn't like my r33 because of the amount of modifications a couple of years ago.

justcars charges for nearly every single mod you put on there. Try uniquecar.com.au - i was insured through them for my r33 and had no problems. I'll admit I had no claims, but everything about the policies, and service seemed quite nice to me. Can pay by the month for a start, about the only one that i know of(?) that allows that.

been with Shannons for 2 years, have 2 r34's insured with them, they are great on the phone - never claimed though.

we have low km policies and multi discounts etc, also some relatives have a stock standard 2000 mdl pulsar SSS and 1996 model honda accord insured with them - once you are in you can pretty much insure what you like!

They definitely PREFER car enthusiasts and sports / classic cars.

I think excess is somewhere between $400 - $600, needed to have Aus Std Alarm fitted with 2-point immob. black wiring etc...maybe thats why your excess is high?

We did actually get a windscreen replacement on one of the 34's and their service was awesome - for an insurance company :(

Cost of rear w/screen was $700 secondhand, they said no worries + had it re-tinted after that!

No complaints - in melbourne though!

Shannon's have been great to us. Our premium has gone down every year (3)even with one claim. Agreed value on the car would now get me a GTR BUT I wouldn't part with her,,,,Monty would eat me alive.

Neil.

People seem to be reconfiming what I thought after talking to them. If you've been with them for a while they're great but you can't start a new policy as a new customer for a daily driver R32 in Sydney it seems. They guy on the phone refered me to Just Cars.

meh... I'll probably just renew my current insurance. From what I've seen they payout when necessary (seen theft & single vehicle accident on a mates car) just the excesses are a bit vicious.

When I had my Torana insurance companies wouldn't touch me with a 10ft barge pole so I guess it could be alot worse.

    • I'm back from the dyno - again! I went looking for someone who knew LS's and had a roller dyno, to see how it shaped up compared to everything else and confirm the powerband really is peaking where Mr Mamo says it should. TLDR: The dyno result I got this time definitely had the shape of how it feels on the road and finally 'makes sense'. Also we had a bit more time to play with timing on the dyno, it turns out the common practice in LS is to lower the timing around peak torque and restore it to max after. So given a car was on the dyno and mostly dialled in already, it was time for tweaking. Luis at APS is definitely knowledgable when it came to this and had overlays ready to go and was happy to share. If you map out your cylinder airmass you start seeing graphs that look a LOT like the engine's torque curve. The good thing also is if you map out your timing curve when you're avoiding knock... this curve very much looks like the inverse of the airmass curve. The result? Well it's another 10.7kw/14hp kw from where I drove it in at. Pretty much everywhere, too. As to how much this car actually makes in Hub Dyno numbers, American Dyno numbers, or Mainline dyno numbers, I say I don't know and it's gone up ~25kw since I started tinkering lol. It IS interesting how the shorter ratio gears I have aren't scaled right on this dyno - 6840RPM is 199KMH, not 175KMH. I have also seen other printouts here with cars with less mods at much higher "kmh" for their RPM due Commodores having 3.45's or longer (!) rear diff ratios maxing out 4th gear which is the 1:1 gear on the T56. Does this matter? No, not really. The real answer is go to the strip and see what it traps, but: I guess I should have gone last Sunday...
    • 310mm rotors will be avilable from Australia, Japan, and probably a few other places. Nothing for the front can be put on the back.
    • The filter only filters down to a specific size. Add to that, the filter is AFTER the pump. So it means everything starts breaking your pump even if its being filtered out.
    • Just like in being 14mm too small (296mm) makes it not fit, being 14mm too big (324mm) it also won't fit. You want to find the correct rotor.
    • @GTSBoy Ok so that was the shops problem...they showed R33 rotors on R34 page and i did not know 296 do not fit(and are for R33) Yes i bought "kit" with rotors and pads. Pads are ok(i have GTT calipers front and rear). They have some 324mm but no 310mm. So i dont know if they would fit. I have 17inch LMGT4s So another question. Can i fit those in the rear or they are just "too" big for that?
