Gday,

I know this has been done before (I"ve searched and read). But I'm after recommendations of either people from these forums who work in a shop, or have got this done by one.

I'm looking into getting a r32 auto and swapping with rb25det and manual conversion with the rb25det matched gearbox. Either that or buying a manual rb20det and then doing engine conversion.

Anyone have any recommendations? And also price estimates?

Would I be looking at $5000 ish or $10,000ish ?

This is not including computer or tuning. Just engine and gearbox swap. Also this does not include diff (I'm assuming you need a stronger one if you wanna do bulletproof driveline).

I've also heard of autostyle and unique auto sports but i prefer to give my business to some nice guys who CARE and are enthusiasts.. HOT4s garages (in my mind) seem a bit more into the money side of cars :(

I have had a number of cars done with Fred and Brett and honestly, you'll not find a pair of fairer or more honest people.

Autostyle - I will not comment, just that people here have some strong feelings about them.

UAS are fine but they are not in the conversion field.

For this kind of work, it's best to talk to people who know how to do conversions.

Either way unless you are very careful you may get taken for a ride..

To be honest trying to tackle it yourself is an option compared to some stories and prices I have seen from workshops.. You can fug up a hell of a lot of things, but at least its in your own time and not your money. Many times a workshop will make much the same mistakes as you might, but they'd be charging you for *their* mistakes and research time. Some places would charge you $10,000 for that sort of conversion.

Unless the workshop has definitely done a couple of the exact conversions, can quote you a fairly firm price (based on the other conversions) and you can see the results for yourself.. I'd be just doing it yourself.

As you can tell I don't have much faith in mechanics these days :P

The tricky part is getting the RB25 ECU to work with the R32 instruments and aircon etc.

Not rocket science but you definitely want someone who has done it before and isn't 'experimenting' with your car and money.

That's why I recommend someone who's done it to his own car.

my mechanic can and has done it before we were going to do it to my car but we found an RB26 for a good price.

he does jobs like that in a weekend, drop it off friday night pick up sunday arvo, so its not as hard as it sounds.

PFC wont make it easier weith the wiring because it still has to be the standard loom.

You're best off dropping the engine in if at all possible yourself.. getting everything hooked up.. then calling up an auto-elec familiar with RB's to sort the wiring.

The wiring is the messy part, but any workshop will probably just call in an auto-elec at the end anyhow.

I just got my RB25DET (series 2) and I was hoping you could help me with some questions.

My Skyline is non turbo so it will be a big step with the RB25.

Now then, my first question is about the gearbox mounts, I hear they aren't the same and I will also have problems with the speedo meter. What do you know about this? Can I use the Xmember of the R33 ??

The second is about the harness, everyone that has ever swapped an engine told me that the harness is the most difficult part of the swap. Do you have the diagram of the R32 and the R33 (still can't find it for the R32) and some pointers on how this is done??

    • I certainly fall into the annoyed camp, but glad to hear that if it's happening at low boost then I'm not likely going to blow a turbo and end up with metal shards in my oil. Just feels like it prevents me from really driving it without hesitation and "peak" performance. Wonder if it's the VCAM, it did an impressive job of shifting the torque curve and faster spool, but maybe now it's "too fast" and there's too much air for how open the throttle is.  Based on some other threads, will also do some reading on synchronizing the actuators. They are the default actuators that come on the Garrett's and I would think they would be set the same coming from the factory, but if the turbos don't actually work exactly the same way at the same time as previously mentioned, it would be worth making sure the actuators are actuating together properly
    • I went down this rabbit hole before, ended up sourcing a motor from the UK (I'm in Japan) which also didn't function correctly. With the original motor, I disassembled it and reassembled it and it works somewhat, sometimes. What I could deduce from all my screwing around is that there is calibration of the gears on the inside of the motor and two ramps on the main gear which activate switches that operate the motor and move the sunroof either to retract into the roof or tilt. Where I got stuck was that, it seemed in my case that one or both of the switches that are activated by the ramp on the gear did not always activate and thus the motor did not move, causing it to sometimes not retract or tilt (apologies, I've forgotten which way it didn't work.).  Of course this part is discontinued at Nissan now, it's the same part in the S15 but no other models. I also contacted the manufacturer of the component for schematics - forgot the name, they're based in Gifu - but they declined to share the information due to being bound by an NDA, sadly. Looking through my pictures now, it seems I last had a crack at this in 2022. See, I so kindly wrote "open" and "close" next to the switches. If you figure it out, please do tell me. Those little switches, with the red buttons may need to be replaced.
    • It says 300ZX, does that make it an Aus delivered car? Funny how back in the day I just couldn't care less about Z32's and these days I am just in love with them. Back when Nissan was into pushing the envelope. 🤣
    • Hi guys, just after some guidance with an R34 sunroof that has stopped working correctly. It still opens and closes perfectly fine, but it no longer tilts/vents up or down. As a result, the rear of the glass now sags a bit as it drops down slightly in order to retract into the roof, but now it can't pop upwards into a flush position. I’ve probed the pins on the back of the switch connector with a multimeter and it seems like both switches (for open/close and tilt/vent) still work correctly. Any ideas on what it could be, or where I should even start in terms of diagnosing? I'm sure someone's had this issue before but I haven't been able to find anything online relating to this specific issue, most of the issues are with the seals leaking or the motor failing entirely. Thanks in advance!
