Hi Guys,

I have just purchased a set of Tomei camshaft from Greenline for my R33 96 series 2 Skyline. The problem that I have is the Tomei exhaust cam crank angle sensor connection is different to the factory ex cam. I tried contacting Greenline to say that maybe they have send me the wrong ex cam but they said that's the exhaust cam for the series 2. As stated in the Tomei web Catalog for the R33, the series 2 model have a different crank angle sensor to a series 1. Is this right? The Ex cam part no. i have now is "EX 1426256085" stated for a series 2 but I think that one i need for my car is "EX 1412256085" for the series 1. Maybe, some of you are saying my skyline might of have a series 1 engine. But I just checked with a mate's series 2 skyline and the crank angle senor is the same as my ( fitting to the front of the ex cam). I am a bit lost, so can any you help me out here? below is the link for the camshaft.

It says on the Tomei web catalog:

ECR33: 1st;1993.8 - 2nd;1997.9 - (changed crank angle sensor)

So it seems that the crank angle sensor wasn't changed with the introduction of the Series 2 (1996), it was changed in September of 1997 onwards.

There were very few R33 GTS-ts produced from 1997.9 onwards, so chances are that your Series 2 was produced before that date. In which case, you probably should have gotten exhaust camshaft with part number "1412256085", and not "1426256085" which you currently have in your possession.

Is the drive in the new cam an offset slot?And your original cam is toothed drive?If it is then you can modify the crank sensor.....i done it on my RB26(i put 33 cams in with a 34 sensor)...its a bit tricky tho....

Thanks for the reply guys. Merli you are 100% right and they have send me the wrong ex cam. I tried telling Greenline (Jason Lee) that they have done a mistake but the only reply I had was " you specificed the car to a be series 2 and that's what we send you." Anyway, there's only two solution to this now; 1. send the ex cam back the Greenline for exchange to the right one. or 2. try getting my hand on a late series 2 crank angle senor. Ylwgtr2 you are right; the new cam do have a offset slot and the original is toothed drive.

well heres what you do......if the cam is non returnable and you cant get a 34 sensor(and you will need the loom section coz its a diffrent plug connector) ,you put your engine at TDC(with the old cam and sensor in)Mark the disc on the sensor and the housing with a permanant marker take it off and knock the pin out off the locator and remove the end peice....then machine up a collar that fits in the new cam and file the slots in it...then fit the new cam in put it back to TDC and align the marks on the Sensor and disc.Fit the machined up collar in the cam and put a touch of super glue on the shaft of the sensor put it in and align the marks you put on the disc and the housing and wait for the glue to take affect.....then carefully remove the sensor and put a sribe on the shaft and machined up collar.....knock off the collar and drill your dowl pin hole in the machined up collar to match up the one on the shaft and your away!Its a bit elaborate and i have to do it a number of times.....takes about 30 mins or so...

do you or any others know if the Power FC for the R33 will run an R34 CAS? I think I can get one.

I already told Jason that all 96 series 2 to pre 97/9 series 2 dont have the different CAS. I think he knows that but they dont want to admit it. Anyway, I told him, i am happen to pay for the shipping cost for sending the new to me and the wrong cam back. And still waiting for his reply. At the end of the day either way (buy a new CAS, modding or exchanging the cam, it's going to cost me money but i want to do it the easiest and cheapest option).

i feel for you as i just been through the same problem with my r33 gtr i bought tomei 260deg 9,15mm lift and got r34 cams ,lucky for me brent at nengun had no problem doing the right thing and spent me a replacement ex cam no charge to me just had to wait awhile for it. Its worth getting the adjustable cam wheels and taking the time to set them up as i got hugh gains from doing so check thread on tuning for mid range torque.

    • HFM BM57 has a "bad" knee point, IIRC. It's not the same thing as the later R chassis MC.
    • The ATTESSA is functionally identical to R34; there were a bunch of JDM models that continued ATTESSA including Fuga/Q70, Skyline/Q50, Cima etc as an option. All with Auto only and I think mostly for snow regions. AFAIK there were no AWD VR30DDTT sold in Australia - it is on my to do list to check regs for racing a LHD car in Targa/ATR/AASA/CAMS events because if I can get the auto to work it would be interesting to run a 4wd car The Ecuteck TCM tuning is the same model as their ECU tuning, they already have it for R35 and Dose's favourite, BMW. You buy "points" to allow your computer to be tuned, buy either a bluetooth (phone app) or bluetooth+USB+Key (phone and PC) dongle, and pay for a tune that will be locked to your tuner ( ). You can also access the tuning software yourself but 1. it is mega expensive and 2. these computers have a billion parameters that intersect, so how could you ever spend enough time on it to get a decent result.

Ha ha ha After reading through this thread, I went on a bit of a research about the Q50/Q60. Now I'm quite intrigued by them! Is the AWD in them more like a WRX where it's always AWD, or is it more like the ATTESSA in the GTRs? By the sound of this TCU tuning, this sounds like a case of someone has made some real software for it, and you just need the right piece of hardware, and then you license that specific vehicle/TCU. Or is this a case of the software will be really expensive so only a few tuners have it, and you still have to pay a license per vehicle?
    • By popular demand.. it was a coil. Got my hands on 1 new OEM coil, replaced with the one that made the less noise difference when I unplugged it while the car was running and started the car up. No stutter and the engine light was gone. I guess I’ll buy the other 5 they have lol
    • No, code 21 is very straightforward. It can only be the things described in that diagnostic flow. In fact it has no way of knowing that the spark plug resistance is out of spec.
