Hi All,

Something my drunken friend said to me the other night got me thinking... I've never really been interested in the 300zx and was just wondering how they stacked up performance wise to an R33 GTS-t... He doesnt know alot about cars and thoguht cos it was twin-turbo he'd kill me... :Bang: I just smiled.

Anyway, how do they go, i'm curious now?

Cheers.

P.S. i did a quick search for similar topics, couldnt seem to find one (went back 4 pages).

stock for stock:

3.0L TT so yes its quick in a straight line...

its a boat though that drinks like a sponge, handles like you're riding a bull, and stops like the brakes are made of rubber (my bro has an 89 TT)

of course these things can be modded to counter that.

the R33GTSt handles better, looks better, is more economical, and stops better. Also has more tuning parts availability in oz.

check out www.aus300zx.com for info on 300zx times down the quarter etc. if you want.

cheers,

Waz.

No way the one i drove handled really well. It was stock as a rock and i took it the thru the National park up near Wollongong. The brakes seemed up to it as well. I think due to the age of the cars its very car dependant/condition etc.

If they werent so expensive back in 2000 when i bought my 32 they would have definitely got a look in.

I've driven 1/2 stuffed std Z32's that still out accelerate & have less body roll than any std GTS-t I've been in. The torque & suspension do a good job of hiding the 1500kgs+ from what I've seen.

They do drink fuel like its free though... & have a few maintainance issues

a FEW issues??

try a LOT of maintenance issues...

in the 4-5 months my brother has had his Z32 we have changed:

- wiring loom (broken wires due to engine bay heat - took 2 days of solid work!)

- about 10 water hoses (leaks everywhere. most hard to get to under plenum)

- fan (stocker had about 15 cracks in it! converted to thermo fan...)

and be prepared to have to remove the engine to change many seals that leak. they may go fast but they aren't freindly to you...

although with what bad luch you have been through, Roy, it doesn't sound all that different to your situation. maybe its just luck?

Warren.

I think the main reason there aren't as many of them that are getting modded is because it's such a bastard as there is crap all room to work with.

Yeah, this means that the engine has to be taken out to do any decent mods, such as changing turbos. Also apparently overheating is a big issue with the zeds, as this gets back to the cramped engine bay.

Handling shouldn't be too bad because the car is very low and the V6 is quite flat, therefore it has a much lower centre of gravity than a skyline.

But in the end the skyline does have one big advantage ITS A SKYLINE :headspin:

    • Thanks guys,  Yeah I should at least have them dynoed, at least then I know what I've got as a starting point.  The springs on these are hard as rocks. I vaguely remember Russman saying he was going to sell the shocks to me with the rocks fitted, as he was keeping the softer springs for his new setup.  I didn't click at the time but of course that was to let me know the shock/spring wouldn't be matched.  I also remember pricing up new springs around 2014-15, but, house, money etc. it never happened. So that was another reason to have them rebuilt. I have rebuilt the forks on many motorcycles so I think I could handle the seals on these easily enough, but getting the valving right would be a rabbit hole I cbf exploring.  Duncan, interesting to hear RP was tuning these back then. I might give them a call.  In the mean time I have been busy fitting sway bars. The Whiteline rear sway bar I purchased 15 years ago finally got fitted, along with the Whiteline front bar that showed up last week. Just waiting on new links for the front sway bar to finish that off.  And my spare set of advan AVS VS5's should be back from the powder coaters in a Pearl White finish sometime this week, with a set of Hankook RS4's lined up for fitting.  And then I just have all the suspension bushes to do. A comprehensive kit is on the way... Lots to do before the Ararat hill climb. Cheers guys 🍻
    • Nice car! I’m glad folks in the US have gotten past the FnF and are buying real cool cars like the 260RS I was with a bunch of mates in Portland about a year ago and spotted a green Stagea (just a regular 2.5T AWD) parked about 2 blocks away and they were like “a what?” So I made a bet with them for a round of beers and said “ok one of you run down there and tell me if the steering wheel is on the correct side” 5 mins later the American comes trudging back up the hill and goes “he’s right guys. Ok what beer do you want?”
    • Should replace OR drop the tank, give it's good clean. Might be worth replacing that entire fuel level/pump/cradle thing with this: https://frenchysperformancegarage.com/products/fpg-s13-180sx-r32gtst-single-pump-hanger-kit-billet-hat-6-v3-fpg-089?gQT=2
