The most frustrating thing on this planet is to have your customs agent ring you and say your new shiney GTR is at the docks but you can't have it because he doesn't have a B/L.  Anyone else using Prestige having this problem at the moment?

Yep....I'm not impressed to put it mildly.

I'm thinking there is something going on with the shipping companies coming in to Sydney because I have heard nothing from Geoff in almost two weeks regarding actually getting my car shipped (except, as I said earlier, he mentioned there were delays at the moment).

LW.

If that's the case, have you thought about shipping it to another Aus port and road freighting the rest of the way? or just pick it up and drive it back?

Richard

Actually, considering others are in Melbourne and having probs, perhaps its just a case of all the shipping lines being overloaded? Who knows.. Geoff hasn't been all that forthcoming except to say things are busy, to expect delays, but that things should get moving shortly. All very hazy.

My customs agent told me today that there are a lot of car carriers coming from Japan at the moment and that is causing delays at this end. AQIS in Melbourne is booked out this week and I can't get my inspection until next Monday, which means I get the car probably Tuesday at the earliest. Is it possible the typhoons around Japan in recent weeks have caused a backlog of shipping (??)

Anyway I finally got the B/L this morning so my CA is on the case and I feel a bit better about the situation - but not entirely happy because the delay should never have happened in the first place.

For those that may not be aware I'll explain and give a bit of advice about how to try to overcome any problems like I had:

When a car is put on the boat the shipping agent creates a 'Bill of Lading' (B/L), which is the official document containing your details (address, etc) and the car details (weight, etc). In effect it's an agreement or contract that the shipper will transport the car between specified ports. Since we/you have an FOB (Free on Board) agreement with the cars supplier, the B/L is marked 'freight collect' meaning that we/you will pay the shipping fees. To ensure that the 'correct' person collects the car at the receiving end, the shipping company mandates that the original Bill of Lading must be provided at collection - a copy is not sufficient, and there are NO exceptions to that rule....but continue reading.

In theory the supplier should send the receiver (me/you) the original B/L to allow collection of the car - and things can still happen that way. However, to speed things up and to overcome the potential for loosing the original in the mail, it's possible for the supplier to 'surrender' the original B/L at the point of origin - this means that the supplier declares you/me as the owner of the vehicle and fully responsible for all charges, etc. The 'surrender' is recorded electronically in the shipping companies system and the original B/L is stamped accordingly. A faxed copy of the 'surrendered' B/L is then sufficient to allow collection of the car (because of the concurrent electronic recording which appears at the shipping company offices at the port of receipt virtually instantly).

In my case the original B/L had not been mailed or 'surrendered' in Japan until yesterday. A ludicrous situation considering it is such a simple thing to do and it should have been done within days of the original B/L being created (in my case on the 18/9...and the car arrived Monday morning). Since my car was not released by the shipping company until today, I am now having to wait until next week to collect it (see above). Of course this is not a lot of time considering I've been waiting since April, but it didn't need to happen.

My advice to those of you still waiting for cars ??....in the week before the ship docks you will get an 'Arrival Notice' from the shipping company. This a courtesy notice and gives the ETA of the and the details of your cargo (the car). On the notice will be the B/L number and you should ring the shipping company to determine whether the B/L has been 'surrendered in Japan or not. If it has, your home and hosed although you should ask your broker for a copy if you don't have one already. Otherwise I'd advise getting in touch with your broker ASAP to find out what the situation is.

Thanks SteveL for that post. It sums up exactly what happened to me as well. Keep in mind all that it is NOT Geoff's fault and the B/L has nothing to do with Geoff it is the supplier's responsibility.

If you need to point the blame at someone, it is the supplier in Japan.

I'll have to disagree with you about Geoff in this case. While it's true that the supplier is ultimately responsible for taking care of the matter in Japan, AFAIC the broker (Geoff in this case) must take some responsibility for ensuring it actually happens - in fact in the broker supplied documentation I got it specifically states that: "we (ie broker/supplier) will take care of the B/L for you" - pretty clear cut in terms of responsibilities AFAIC. After all, isn't this part of the service we are paying a fee for ??

At the end of the day this is not rocket science, and the procedure concerning the B/L could (and should) have been taken care of within a few days of the ship leaving Japan. It's also a simple matter to check wether it has been actually done (it took me one phone call to the shipping company) - I would have thought the fact that a faxed copy of the surrendered B/L hadn't arrived on Geoff's desk well before the ship docked would have been raising alarm bells.....but apparently not.

Because of this unnecessary delay I am now looking at next Tuesday to get my car at the earliest (that's more than a week after the car arrived on the dock). I'm up for storage charges and there's the worry about potential damage and theft from the car.

I agree with you actually. I mean the B/L is one of the most important documents and sending it so late is unfathomably frustrating. I've been there.

I must say that I had to pay storage fees at the dock because of the same issue you are going through.

The reason why im not jumping up and down fuming about it now is that the storage fees turn out to be one of the cheapest parts of the whole excercise ($20 + GST per day after the first 3 days which are free for me).

Also, I have now taken delivery of the car, and the day you do that is the day all of the F'ing B.S red-tape that has lead up to it seems worth it somehow.

Steve and sewid, may I ask who your respective suppliers are? pm me if you consider it innapropriate to post it here.

Thanks,

Richard

I told you the other night at Il Bolognase - must be a case of bad food amnesia - you probably forgot the whole night

I agree, Geoff can not even tell me if my car has made it onto a ship or not. Wouldnt it just be 1 phone call to the supplier or shipping company? These late B/L's im hearing about from everyone is not too good either, i think Geoff could ensure that it was sped up by talking to the suppliers etc?

i just think for the premium service fee we have paid (i know of a couple much cheaper services) that it should be a bit more organised re shipping if possible.

I would not be so quick to judge Geoff. I have found him very helpful all the way, and while something is obviously amiss at the moment, that doesn't mean he isn't doing his best. Remember, he is just a small fish in a huge pond, and if you know anything about dealing with suppliers you know how frustrating and slow progress can be regardless of how many calls you make.

That's not to say Geoff couldn't be more communicative about the problems -- for me, this is always the issue; I am not much fussed about problems and delays as long as I am informed about them rather than kept in the dark -- but lets not judge until things become clearer.

LW.

You did too. :slap:

my only defence is that not having my GTR is making me stupid...

honest.

Richard

Right. Well, I emailed Geoff today to check on the status of my car:

Hi Geoff,

I appreciate you are probably quite busy, and there is obviously a bit of a squeeze getting cars on ships, but I am just wondering if there has been any update in the last two weeks from the supplier regarding actually shipping my car?

And got this reply:

Your vehicle is on it's way.  BL copy this afternoon, original being posted.

.... which is a bit of a suprise. Will be interesting to see if the B/L makes a prompt appearance.

Lucien.

lwells - stay on Geoff's back for the B/L - I must have emailed him 5 times in a week trying to get mine and finally got it yesterday, 5 days after the boat docked.

SteveL - sounds like you and I are in exactly the same situation - I purchased my 'R in April and it has taken 'till now to get it here with the same issues with B/L.

Incidentally, I found Prestige a bit dissapointing. As mentioned in previous messages we pay a premium for their service and I expect a little feedback as the process goes along.

I was particularly upset when I originally sent off my Import appplication to DOTARS . I meticulously following the detailed advice given by Geoff when I bought the car so that I wouldn't have any problems. After I had sent the application I rang the customs agent (recommended by Prestige) to notify them that I wanted them to handle paperwork but the line was cut off. When I contacted Geoff he said that they had gone out of business and suggested I use a different agent - no problem I can do that.

What really concerned me was a note on the bottom of the email (as an afterthought) which said "by the way I am waiting for a Deregistration document to come from the supplier to include with your application". A bit late Geoff I sent it 3 days ago!! When I again contacted Geoff and explained that my application had been sent he told me all I needed to do was ring them up and fax them a copy - no problem. After waiting another 3 days (and another 2 emails to Prestige) I finally received the deregistration document (remember I bought the car in April and it is now mid August!) it was for the wrong car!. Bugger-me how hard is all this!.

I actually received my approved Import Application before I got the correct De-registration document.

All of this would have been avoided by a simple e-mail from Prestige to all clients waiting for cars that; 1. The Melbourne customs agent was out of business, 2. DOTARS now wants deregistration documents included with applications.

Couldn't be that hard could it.

Sorry guys - just needed to brain-dump all of that - I feel better now.

SteveL - might see you at the wharf on Tuesday!

    • See if you can thermal epoxy a heatsink or two onto it?
    • The other problem was one of those "oh shit we are going to die moments". Basically the high spec Q50s have a full electric steering rack, and the povo ones had a regular hydraulic rack with an electric pump.  So couple of laps into session 5 as I came into turn 2 (big run off now, happily), the dash turned into a christmas tree and the steering became super heavy and I went well off. I assumed it was a tyre failure so limped to the pits, but everything was OK. But....the master warning light was still on so I checked the DTCs and saw – C13E6 “Heat Protection”. Yes, that bloody steering rack computer sitting where the oil cooler should be has its own sensors and error logic, and decided I was using the steering wheel too much. I really appreciated the helpful information in the manual (my bold) POSSIBLE CAUSE • Continuing the overloading steering (Sports driving in the circuit etc,) “DATA MONITOR” >> “C/M TEMPERATURE”. The rise of steering force motor internal temperature caused the protection function to operate. This is not a system malfunction. INSPECTION END So, basically the electric motor in the steering rack got to 150c, and it decided to shut down without warning for my safety. Didn't feel safe. Short term I'll see if I can duct some air to that motor (the engine bay is sealed pretty tight). Long term, depending on how often this happens, I'll look into swapping the povo spec electric/hydraulic rack in. While the rack should be fine the power supply to the pump will be a pain and might be best to deal with it when I add a PDM.
    • And finally, 2 problems I really need to sort.  Firstly as Matt said the auto trans is not happy as it gets hot - I couldn't log the temps but the gauge showed 90o. On the first day I took it out back in Feb, because the coolant was getting hot I never got to any auto trans issues; but on this day by late session 3 and then really clearly in 4 and 5 as it got hotter it just would not shift up. You can hear the issue really clearly at 12:55 and 16:20 on the vid. So the good news is, literally this week Ecutek finally released tuning for the jatco 7 speed. I'll have a chat to Racebox and see what they can do electrically to keep it cooler and to get the gears, if anything. That will likely take some R&D and can only really happen on track as it never gets even warm with road use. I've also picked up some eye wateringly expensive Redline D6 ATF to try, it had the highest viscosity I could find at 100o so we will see if that helps (just waiting for some oil pan gaskets so I can change it properly). If neither of those work I need to remove the coolant/trans interwarmer and the radiator cooler and go to an external cooler....somewhere.....(goodbye washer reservoir?), and if that fails give up on this mad idea and wait for Nissan to release the manual 400R
    • So, what else.... Power. I don't know what it is making because I haven't done a post tune dyno run yet; I will when I get a chance. It was 240rwkw dead stock. Conclusion from the day....it does not need a single kw more until I sort some other stuff. It comes on so hard that I could hear the twin N1 turbos on the R32 crying, and I just can't use what it has around a tight track with the current setup. Brakes. They are perfect. Hit them hard all day and they never felt like having an issue; you can see in the video we were making ground on much lighter cars on better tyres under brakes. They are standard (red sport) calipers, standard size discs in DBA5000 2 piece, Winmax pads and Motul RBF600 fluid, all from Matty at Racebrakes Sydney. Keeping in mind the car is more powerful than my R32 and weighs 1780, he clearly knows his shit. Suspension. This is one of the first areas I need to change. It has electronically controlled dampers from factory, but everything is just way too soft for track work even on the hardest setting (it is nice when hustling on country roads though). In particular it rolls into oversteer mid corner and pitches too much under hard braking so it becomes unstable eg in the turn 1 kink I need to brake early, turn through the kink then brake again so I don't pirouette like an AE86. I need to get some decent shocks with matched springs and sway bars ASAP, even if it is just a v1 setup until I work out a proper race/rally setup later. Tyres. I am running Yoko A052 in 235/45/18 all round, because that was what I could get in approximately the right height on wheels I had in the shed (Rays/Nismo 18x8 off the old Leaf actually!). As track tyres they are pretty poor; I note GTSBoy recently posted a porker comparo video including them where they were about the same as AD09.....that is nothing like a top line track tyre. I'll start getting that sorted but realistically I should get proper sized wheels first (likely 9.5 +38 front and 11 +55 at the rear, so a custom order, and I can't rotate them like the R32), then work out what the best tyre option is. BTW on that, Targa Tas had gone to road tyres instead of semi slicks now so that is a whole other world of choices to sort. Diff. This is the other thing that urgently needs to be addressed. It left massive 1s out of the fish hook all day, even when I was trying not too (you can also hear it reving on the video, and see the RPM rising too fast compared to speed in the data). It has an open diff that Infiniti optimistically called a B-LSD for "Brake Limited Slip Diff". It does good straight line standing start 11s but it is woeful on the track. Nismo seem to make a 2 way for it.
    • Also, I logged some data from the ECU for each session (mostly oil pressures and various temps, but also speed, revs etc, can't believe I forgot accelerator position). The Ecutek data loads nicely to datazap, I got good data from sessions 2, 3 and 4: https://datazap.me/u/duncanhandleyhgeconsultingcomau/250813-wakefield-session-2?log=0&data=7 https://datazap.me/u/duncanhandleyhgeconsultingcomau/250813-wakefield-session-3?log=0&data=6 https://datazap.me/u/duncanhandleyhgeconsultingcomau/250813-wakefield-session-4?log=0&data=6 Each session is cut into 3 files but loaded together, you can change between them in the top left. As the test sessions are mostly about the car, not me, I basically start by checking the oil pressure (good, or at least consistent all day). These have an electrically controlled oil pump which targets 25psi(!) at low load and 50 at high. I'm running a much thicker oil than recommended by nissan (they said 0w20, I'm running 10w40) so its a little higher. The main thing is that it doesn't drop too far, eg in the long left hand fish hook, or under brakes so I know I'm not getting oil surge. Good start. Then Oil and Coolant temp, plus intercooler and intake temps, like this: Keeping in mind ambient was about 5o at session 2, I'd say the oil temp is good. The coolant temp as OK but a big worry for hot days (it was getting to 110 back in Feb when it was 35o) so I need to keep addressing that. The water to air intercooler is working totally backwards where we get 5o air in the intake, squish/warm it in the turbos (unknown temp) then run it through the intercoolers which are say 65o max in this case, then the result is 20o air into the engine......the day was too atypical to draw a conclusion on that I think, in the united states of freedom they do a lot of upsizing the intercooler and heat exchanger cores to get those temps down but they were OK this time. The other interesting (but not concerning) part for me was the turbo speed vs boost graph: I circled an example from the main straight. With the tune boost peaks at around 18psi but it deliberately drops to about 14psi at redline because the turbos are tiny - they choke at high revs and just create more heat than power if you run them hard all the way. But you can also see the turbo speed at the same time; it raises from about 180,000rpm to 210,000rpm which the boost falls....imagine the turbine speed if they held 18psi to redline. The wastegates are electrically controlled so there is a heap of logic about boost target, actual boost, delta etc etc but it all seems to work well
