i think the best idea is to talk to the people who have the right answers.

for insurance : ring an insurance company - as a general note, your in the worst possible case

for legalities: contact the RTA (for NSW) and ask them - i dont beleive there is any laws (yet) about not having a r32gts when your on your p's

If it's illegal then insurance wouldn't cover it no matter who's name it was under since it's duty of disclosure in good faith. Which means you have to tell them anything you know that you can reasonably think might affect their insurance of you < quite a simple concept really.

Insurance at 17 = doubt it. JustCars (for people I know who are older than you and been driving longer with the same car) seem to offer around the $5000-5500 mark with about a $4000 excess (or thereabouts - for me it was about $6000).

I doubt anyone else would insure you.

Also you can't put it under your mums name cos then you're not covered. You need to be a nominated driver to be covered. When you're nominated they quite simply give you the same price as if it was in your name (as it always goes by the youngest/highest risk driver).

My mate is 21 and he doesn't insure his cos he can't.

He's never had a speeding ticket.

Never crashed.

Totally stock car.

Good luck.

Assuming you are in NSW as per your profile yes as the power to weight restrictions such as those in vic dont apply here.

You cant put it in your mums name and have your name as a listed driver, this used to work but insurance companies arent stupid and have clamped down hard on this.

Getting a GTS would be a smart move until you have more experience under your belt, then make the move to a turbocharged import

if your parents are with NRMA then they will insure you. that is how i got mine insured. also under my dads name it is $2000 a yr to insure a r33 gtr which by far is the cheapest i have seen it. i know because i am a listed driver that if i am in an accident i need to pay an excess of $1500 but in my dads name it is $600.

Why cant your mate get insurance ?? is it cause no one WILL insure him or he just doesnt wanna pay ridiculous amounts ???

cause im pretty much the opposite of your mate (except in age)

im 22 now but i was 21 when i first insured my car (R34 gtt), I had numerous speeding fines, wrote off my last car and basically lost my liscence (except i didnt cause of some legal handywork..long story), with bodykit, rims, lowered and exhuast....all listed and the insurance came out to be just over 2.5k

which just goes to show the inconsistencies (spelling?) in the insurance process.

i have a 93 r32 gtst im 21 no accidents few traffic fines in nsw and through just cars my 3rd party is 550 and full comprehensive is 3200 with 1350 excess on both but i have not had insurance on my previous cars.

most are also offering 3rd party fire and theft now for 150 on your normal premium

8ball - yeah mate you're right to own one, just save PLENTY of cash for insurance...as most ppl have said above. JustCar would be about the only company who would even insure you - i'm 24 and have a full no claim bonus and i still paid $1800...good luck dude

    • looking for some help and maybe some insight on others experience with a new LSD. R34 GT ran and drove beautifully, but always alot of grip loss due to the open R200 rear end, so I just installed a new 1.5 LSD way into the stock open R200 for a ER34. Simple. Everything seemed right. I test drove for the first time this weekend. as I started to back out the garage the first time slowly with tires straight it sounded and felt like I had a loose or half disconnected drive shaft...that was clucking around loose and shaking entire vehicle, and making it feel like the trans clutch was spontaneously slipping then grabbing very roughly while just letting out pedal slowly. I backed it out went to pull forward with the same noise, shake and slip grab feeling with hesitation, I turned the tires to back out more and then pulled ahead some same thing but worst because of added wheel resistance (which that I expected) puzzled … pulling it back in checking everything over and finding nothing wrong, I tried it the next day. same thing, couldn’t believe how it shook everything again making a terrible noise and making it feel like the trans clutch was slipping and grabbing, but I got it out of garage into the driveway, got it straight, drove forward and then reveres a few times in a straight line everything shaking , causing what felt like clutch slip and grab every time, sounded like right behind front driver tire and I could feel it in the floor board with my feet,... worst right when beginning to let clutch pedal out to engage slightly, shuttering and sounding terrible along the way…I managed to slowly get down the road, babying it the whole way, once I was rolling (out of 1st) seemed to be better and between shifts, then clutch felt closer to normal…not slip/ grab etc., but back down to any stop, straight road or turning, same thing. Made no difference if all tires were straight or if I was turning. All other gauge read out correct. with in 2 miles as planned I reached the empty parking lot and performed the break in procedure that came with lsd, essentially to drive in a figure 8 a bunch.  Did this, binding chattering, and shaking the car the whole way. I drove it back home seemed somewhat normal once I was in straight line and past 10 mph or so, and I know it will “bind” on corners and cause some tires squeal when turning especially from a stop, but when I begin to move it still causes what feels like the trans clutch to slip and jerk badly as well as shaking the entire car, and sounds terrible, that I didn’t expect. I used the fluid they supplied with LSD kit and did the breaking, planning to change fluid as they suggest after breaking, but wondering will it get smoother or less aggressive with use? maybe a 1.5 is just too aggressive for normal road driving?   I have a LSD that I put in my 71 cuda when I restored it, with amazing smooth , quite yet effective results. Different style LSD but that ones a joy to drive. maybe expecting too much from this R200?

    • Hello!  i just finished manual swaping my r34 skyline with a r33 rb20de box(RB71C)box  When the car is running it squeaks crazy loud and it was smoking from the gearbox area. The gearbox is fine it was tested. The clutch slave cylinder seems like it doesn't fully releases the clutch. I want to ask if this noise is from the throw out bearing or could it be the clutch assembly or disk att.xFliq87Gzw6kImKBVqDebXkj0fBqymk0JaYeP3_3SlM.mp4
