If its for an RB or most other vehicles, remove the enginetrans braces and bellhousing dust cover, then lay large flatblade screw driver along the pan rail engaging the ring gear teeth.

Use the best fitting screw driver to prevent damage to the ring gear. Passenger side to undo, drivers side to tighten. Much easier than removing starter and fitting ring gear lock, IF you can find one to fit.

if ur feeling game then u can use a long breaker bar and the appropriate socket rest it on the chassis and tap the starter it should b enough 2 crack the bolt enough 2 undo it. I have done this a few times being an apprentice mechinac when in tight spots 2 get a rattle gun in there.

are you sure you are trying to undo it in the right direction? How can that not work?

I have done that on a few motors (but I used a loooong breaker bar and rested it on the ground) including a high comp 308 and it worked :P

some of those flywheel bolts are on there mentally tight and usually are loctited in there

thats lock tight .. not loc tit.

you can get breaker bars in a variety of lengths for around $40 all up

like the ones here

http://www.justtools.com.au/prod1027.htm

but yeah as the others have said maybe try a longer breaker bar?

It doesn`t work because the bolt is done up to 450nm , the starter motor is only designed to turn over the motor

The problem is that the clutch starts to slip it not that i cant get enough torque on the bolt

The right direction ???? if i didn`t know what direction was undo do u think i would try to change the timing belt

The starter will work but you have to give it some slack, no point leaning it againiest the rail and then hit it ..

Give it a fair bit of slack say 400 mm put a block of wood on the rail where you expect it to hit , then hit the starter, it should work, make sure you use a solid bar not one with a ratchet and make sure you have a fully charged battery.

^^^^^

it didn`t work , i dont want this turning into another how to undo the crank bolt thread there is like 50 of them already i was just seeing if i could get a ring gear stopper so i didn`t have to re-gas the air con.

I tried one of them "power drive" things no good , with a breaker bar i pulled the car over a wheel chock with the handbrake on , i then chocked all the wheels and the clutch would then slip

Time for a new clutch ???? If you can't get it undone with the starter trick ( provided you don't lean it on the rail and expect the starter to undo it) you better have a huge rattle gun . I have a ring gear stopper but I don't think it would help you . I only ever used it when the motor is out of the car and only when my 3/4" rattle gun wouldn't undo it . Then I used the stopper and a huge 3/4" drive breaker bar with a pipe at the end .

The trick with the starter is to have a long bar and make sure you have some slack and make it so the end of the bar hits, don't expect to have much grunt near the socket..

    • Sorry to hear your HFM BM57 was faulty,  did you contact HFM I would hope they would be at least grateful for the information if there was some sort of manufacturing fault, you would hope they would be sympathetic even if your item was 2 years old if it had never been fitted. May I ask where it leaked from ?
    • Cats are called Bella, and Donna...  Like that poisonous plant And I remember your 2 monsters, I remember making a little bit of wee when you let them out... LOL I have already installed cat doors into the laundry where their kitty litter is, and the sun room, apart from the cat doors there's not going to be any permanent mounted stuff on the interior walls (interior doors are cheap and easy to replace) I will get a outdoor cat cage thingie once I finish the landscaping out back... https://catnip.com.au/ The only off limit areas are the main bedroom and the gym room....but, currently the cats are curled up in bed, in the main bedroom with the Mrs.....LOL, the off limits for the kittens to the main bedroom lasted about 5 minutes with Jackie I currently only have 1 free standing huge cat tree multiple level scratching post thingie in the lounge room, but, I will be getting another one soon now that I'm happy with the furniture layout in the back room and have a perfect spot for it
    • All of this is making it seem clear that running the Coppermix twin was definitely the way to go, especially in hindsight with how insane tariffs have gotten and the strength of the USD vs yen at the time.
    • That sounds like no chance of even importing one for road registering then Now I see why Duncan wants to check LHD rules for Targa...   I wonder how "bolt in" the AWD would be if you got one imported from the US and swapped it to an AUD one
    • Not to mention they drive like a bucket of bolts! yuck!
