Anyone up for doing a formal

What's involved with a formal drive?Do you just drop off your passenger then quietly go home?Or do you wait around some dark corner with all the other drivers for 4 or 5 hours,reading a mag' only to pick up your drunk passenger that you have to flog senseless after they vomit in your prized ride?Ah...sorry 'bout that:flashback to earlier days...

Still,I'm sorta curious to help out fellow 'Liners,but I don't need the Police attention or drunken idiots when I may arrive...how's it all work these days?

If you want a leather interior schmick looking Stagea i'm up for it, hehe... dunno if you want people thinking you got driven in a volvo though.

Well - the usual go is to arrive a little earlier than they want to leave home - gives parents, friends etc time to take photos and droool over car!!!

Then you drive passengers - take part in line-up - definitely the fun part. It is customary / polite to actually open door and let passenger/s out - 'specially if they are female!!. Then the departing bit is up to you. If there are stacks of people around (and there will be HUNDREDS at the big formals - SFX - Belco High etc etc - they will usually call for a little laying of rubber etc. Up to you (personally wouldn't) but be aware that people are usually in close. No-one will touch your car - they just want to look and ooh and aah.....

I did three formals last year and had HEAPS of fun. Even parked the car each time and watched rest of the hordes arrive.

It is definitely not usual to wait around and take them somewhere else. No-one wants spewey Year 10s / Year 12s in their car anyway.

Payment depends, not sure what going rate is. Sometimes just $20 or mostly (for me anyway) just did it for the fun and seeing the glazed look in their eyes.

BTW - My daughter's Year 10 formal is this year... Looking forward to that..

im doing one on the 1st of december, only asking $20 cause im just happy to help a young guy out who wants to arrive in a nice car. i know theo (owner of the blue R34vspec) doesnt charge, he said he's just happy to help out the people he's taken.

if you want a few lines to cruise in with you im sure some of us would be happy, i know i'd be more than happy to be part of an entourage for you.

Well,it's sounding better than the formals I used to do in my :Oops: Commodore...(yes,I've owned one or two:at least the last one had a forced Nissan heartbeat!).So,as long as someone gives me enough notice,I'll do a formal or two...or three or four,depending on timing.I know I've got AutoSalon Final Battle the first weekend of December :D ,but other than then,I believe I've not got much on...I'm not really in it for the dollars,so I'm happy to do it for the fun of it for the mo'.So,whoever PM me(Kwyjibo?) if there's something coming up,and we'll see what we can organise!I like the idea of a 32,33 and a 34 all rolling in at once :drooling:

All sounds good, wouldn't mind helping out too, and maybe get a car or two to help me with my sister's year 12.

As a side note, anyone doing this who has comp. insurance should be careful, my policy has some specifics about not being covered if being paid to drive someone.

THAT would be awesome!

I would do a formal if asked, but the asthetics(sp?) of my car arent up for it yet, should be ready by mid dec though

mine is up for offer nothing special though just a plain looking R32 GTR gunmetal with white wheels.

"Nothing special"?!Wash your mouth out!I have many friends that are willing to sacriface vital body parts just to sit in a GTR....And,if I'm not mistaken,aren't your "white wheels" Volks?

      Yeah, it's getting like that, my daughter is coming over on Thursday to help me remove the bonnet so I can install the Carbuilders underbonnet stuff,  I might get her to give me a hand and remove the hardtop, maybe, because on really hot days the detachable hardtop helps the aircon keep the interior cool, the heat just punches straight through to rag top I also don't have enough hair for the "wind in the hair" experience, so there is that....LOL

      Could be falling edge/rising edge is set wrong. Are you getting sync errors?

      On BMWs what I do because I'm more confident that I can't instantly crush the pinch welds and do thousands of USD in chassis damage is use a set of rubber jacking pads designed to protect the chassis/plastic adapter and raise a corner of the car, place the aforementioned 2x12 inch wooden planks under a tire, drop the car, then this normally gives me enough clearance to get to the front central jack point. If you don't need it to be a ramp it only needs to be 1-1.5 feet long. On my R33 I do not trust the pinch welds to tolerate any of this so I drive up on the ramps. Before then when I had to get a new floor jack that no longer cleared the front lip I removed it to get enough clearance to put the jack under it. Once you're on the ramps once you simply never let the car down to the ground. It lives on the ramps or on jack stands.

      Nah. You need 2x taps for anything that you cannot pass the tap all the way through. And even then, there's a point in response to the above which I will come back to. The 2x taps are 1x tapered for starting, and 1x plug tap for working to the bottom of blind holes. That block's port is effectively a blind hole from the perspective of the tap. The tapered tap/tapered thread response. You don't ever leave a female hole tapered. They are supposed to be parallel, hence the wide section of a tapered tap being parallel, the existince of plug taps, etc. The male is tapered so that it will eventually get too fat for the female thread, and yes, there is some risk if the tapped length of the female hole doesn't offer enough threads, that it will not lock up very nicely. But you can always buzz off the extra length on the male thread, and the tape is very good at adding bulk to the joint.
