Hi,

I have a '96 R33 Skyline Series II and when I change gears from 3rd to 4th and from 4th to 5th, it crunches... even when I drive it nicely. It used to only do it when going from 3rd to 4th... Would a gearbox oil change be the first thing to perform (can you do a oil change in the gearbox?)?

Also, I supposedly have a Patrol clutch in my car (thats what the import car yard I bought it from told me). Also, this crunching came was evident from the dealer.

any suggestions would be great.

Thanks

Steve

ok, firstly find where the fill bolt and the drain bolt is and try and undo them alittle just to make sure you can get them off.

then get yourself 5L of gearbox oil ( depends on howmuch you want to spend )

you could try that nulon gearbox treatment stuff, its meant to help with gear changes.

drop the oil and fil it back up with the new stuff and the treatment and see how you go.

When i had a crunching noise when changing from 3rd to 4th i tried changing the oil but it didn't help, It ended up being a stuffed 4th gear syncro which was easy enough to change when i had the box rebuilt :)

Its probably not want you want to hear but this is the only way to completely fix the problem...

Just out of interest if you consciously press the clutch in, wait half a second to a second then change gears does it go ok then?

If so climb under the car and get someone to hit the clutch for your a few times to see if the slave is moving. It might not be engaging/disengaging properly.

That what was grinding gears for me chronically - turned out the slave was never screwed in properly and it had 1 half undone bolt holding it in.

Otherwise drive nicely and rev match to change gears like I do (till i get my box rebuilt).

Hi

thanks for the repsonses guys.. much appreciated.

When i press the clutch and let it sit for 1/2 a second, the gear change will happen with very little noise. it's only when I change normally (not letting the clutch sit in) that it crunches.

sounds to me like your clutch isn't dissengaging fully, or 'dragging'. This is causing your crunching when changing gears because the clutch is sticking and not fully lifting off. Get your clutch point taken up (fairly simple you can do this yourself). If you are due for a gbox oil change throw in some castrol vmx80 + nulon g70 treatment. Whats the condition of your clutch like? do you think it might be due for a replacement/worn out? Same thing happened to my clutch, changed gearbox oil etc but turned out to be a wasted clutch even thought it wasn't slipping, just dragging.

After how many km's do u have to drop the gearbox oil ?

What brand is vmx80?

The last time time i changed my fuel filter was at 60,000km i just changed it now at 100,000km goes much harder now. i cut open the old one...it was dirty as hell..all brown shit in it and build up of particles.

I recently changed my fuel filter i used coopers brand ...$6.00

and oil filter.........................................coopers brand......$9.00

and dropped the engine oil.......Fuchs (german oil )10w 30......$49.00 5 litres

-Synthetic oil-

I thought I give the Fuchs oil a go. The last 5,000km oil changed i used Valvoline 10w 30 not synthetic,

which i bought at $28.00 and i noticed the oil was very black.

I usually use the Conoco Philips oil which i noticed gives me a good repsonse in power after an oil change, it becomes more responsive i found .

So far the Fuchs oil hasnt really done much at the moment power wise.

i got the same problem when shifting in the higher rev range change oil to redline shock proof syn didn't make much of a difference but ive been told clutch adjustment could get rid of the problem

sounds easier than getting the box rebuilt any one know of a gear box place thats good just in case

I had my box rebuilt by Simon at CGB (Competition GearBoxes), great guy and a good price so far after 10months I've had no problems

Give him a call on 03 97536906 or 0408 650 060 he's in ferntree gully

    • Check the injectors flow evenly, and are actually flowing what you and the ECU think they should be flowing. If it's starting up on starter fluid, you have a fuel issue. Is it possible under cranking your fuel pump is turning off?   The harness you replaced, is that the whole engine harness? Do yourself a test, and drop the old harness on and plug it into the Z32 ECU. It's possible they've wired things different. From memory S1 to S2 is different in RB25 and you may have a wrong loom
    • I haven’t pulled the injectors to watch them spray yet but they are clicking from the cas and all of the spark plugs are wet with fuel. I’ve thought the cylinders were being flooded from the beginning and was hoping fuel pressure would fix it. Tonight I am going to pull the rail and watch the injectors spray. Don’t know how to test/diagnose if the plugs are firing in correct sequence but that should be a timing thing and as far as timing goes my car still has the half moon for the cas can only install it 1 way. And my mechanical timing is 100% correct I posted photos above. Confirmed with the balancer on and off.
    • I checked spark on all cylinders and they all visually have spark with the plug pulled and grounded, but plug 1 is the only one that fouled. This was a running swap that blew up and was rebuilt by a machine shop, put a new wiring specialties harness and did all gaskets, studs, and bolts while it was out.  compression is 135-150 across all cylinders. Aside from that from my understanding with the z32 ecu and maf the car should start regardless. The wiring for TPS and the dual 02 sensor/ dual knock sensor stuff shouldn’t actually stop the car from starting or even running well, (just slightly rich)  they just give fault codes. Car supposedly is supposed to start as long as you have z32 afm and ecu with the nistune base map and that’s info coming from a well known and trusted tuner who does a lot with SR/RB (Rsenthalpy). After more trouble shooting today where I’m at right now is that the cas is sending signal to the injectors they click while spinning the rotor, Fuel pressure is now set at 43psi, all cylinders have good compression and all of the plugs looked great (just wet with fuel) except for cylinder 1 which was very black (cylinder 1 has 150psi compression). all of the coils generate spark if pulled out and grounded out on the head. On the fuel pump car just pops into the exhaust. On starting fluid car will fire off. Hard to tell if all cylinders are firing off but definitley a couple. sounds like all of them but it’s only for 3-5 seconds hard to tell.
    • Final update!!! Got the front bar fitted and sprayed and all sorted now. My cutouts worked great and the indicators aren’t just falling off. 😂
    • Is this a brand new LSD? if so, have you followed any break/bed in procedure for it? Usually involves heaps of figure 8 patterns, a fluid flush.
