I noticed UAS have some 'budget' coil-overs for sale now which I am considering buying (for R32 GTST):

These seem to be a good price for what you get... what do people think of these?? My car is basically a daily driver so i don't need anything fancy... I know they are a similar price to bilsteins/kings, but the coilovers have the advantage of being adjustable (height/damper).

Apparently they come with something like 500/400 pound springs which is too hard for everyday road use. Reading other post it seems like 300/190 pounds would be acceptible for Adelaide roads...??

Any comments/recommendations appreciated...

I have sold my Tein HR in my zed speed boat. I will know for sure re track times and feel often car after fitting them. I can say that the spring rates are MUCH more sensible than most other Jap coil overs other than Tein Flex but well over twice the price. Both for road and track and you can have TOO hard a spring rate and car will lock up brakes too easy and skip and bounce car all over the road and track and can even be worse than stock suspension.

The other big benfit is you can adjust the overall height not just the spring platform height.

John, when you say you can adjust the overall height... is that what the extra ring near the bottom of the shaft is for? I noticed the HR have this but not the HS.

Also, R32GTST is 440/330 (8/6) which still seems too hard for the road... you'd probably want to swap the 330s to the front and get 200s for the rear (going by the recommendations in various other threads)

be careful spending your money. the only way you'll know the baseline performance of any shock/spring is to put it on a shock dyno and run the thing up to check high/low damping speed (that's shock speed not car speed) to see how it performs so you can compare it to others and in particular see if it has any nasty habits. Feel means diddly unless you are setting up suspensions for a living and even then it's not straightforward.

Yes boosted32 you can adjust the over height and hence the extra locking ring. This stops squashing the spring if you want your car to sit a bit higher than the normal very low.

Re the shock dyno I plan on doing this and I have had the Tein dyno tested to compare with and they were nothing flash. The spring rates are not too hard. Most of the other Jap brands are way harder than this which are too hard but those rates soudn about right for performance road come track.

My Tein are 670 front and were 570 rear which was way too hard. Yes I know it is a heavy boat compared to a R32 but not that much prob 250 or 300kg heavier. But if you want you can ask for what ever spring rate you want within reason which is also a added feature.

Yah, I’ve emailed them and they're getting back with standard spring rates, plus if they are serviceable or not.

The $1700 deal on the HR's is until the end of Jan, so hopefully ma GTR gets off Brisbane docks in time.

My only prolly, is I wanna invest in shocks, not to have to worry about em for a while, meaning they need to be of quality / serviceable / easily changeable spring, have the pillow ball rubber mounted etc, and I’m not sure if these are them. I mean HKS or others are a little bit more pricey, I juz gota figure out if these are worth the risk, given there’s NO information on the web about em.

I have a set of HR's on the way from UAS so I'll let you all know how they rate. Gotta say John was helpful, but unfortunately the HS are out of stock so I've gone for the more trackworthy package.

...Oh sh1t, so now not only do i have to worry about those GTRs at track days, now you have suspension i have to worry about pesky R33 GTSTs as well? As long as you dont run stickies i may still have your measure:)

Actually, i still have that 2nd set of stickies...its safer if we hunt in packs:)

By the way their is another option for R32 GTR being a top shelf model HR model with remote cannister so has bump and rebound adjustment and all alloy so light weight. Price is $2395 a set. This is VERY cheap for this style of suspension. Proflex top shelf stuff like this is more like $6k and more. Not saying same quality but may not be much in it. I checked and they don't make for any other cars yet including for my zed slot car. I think R32 GTR and 300ZX ssuspension is same or very similar so might be able to use them. I am checking on this. They require 10 sets ordered and they will make for other cars.

Really keen to see some shock dyno comparisons John so we can assess the quality for ourselves. Say against Bilsteins, Konis, Tein and Whiteline? Like you I've seen Tein and they were awful but to be fair I don't know what type/condition.

I reckon you wouldn't be able to keep up with demand if they did well at least under road conditions, given the price.

That's a damn fine price, and an option for a future upgrade if I get too over the top.

As for the car, gonna put the RB25 cams back in today so I can drive it. Too doughy with the GTR cams and no hand controller to compensate, but I will regrind the GTR cams for an amazing $300/pr at Crow to suit the Hydraulic lifters. Nissan wanted about $130 ea for solids and shims which x 24 = lots'o'money.

All things considered, if JP wants to run these in the slotcar then they have to be worth a try. I can't afford to wait otherwise I'd get my mate at the Koni distributor to run them up, but I intend to roll past Pedders and show them as their product is about $3K non-adjustable damping with a stated 400kg/mm springs -> wankers. They need to adjust pricing and maybe determine the spring rate.

I did look at some JIC recently but every piston was rusted and flaking off the chrome and non rebuildable. They are cartridges so you replace the unit. Can be had for $830ish US for a set so the asking price was steep as they are only height adjustable and the cartridges are about 180US each. Very light but these HD's seem to be the best value for money about.

Quality is great, you can go very low and the highest setting is just a bit higher than legal.

The spring rate is pretty hard ut about right for track. Nowhere near as hard as the HKS crap in my GTR so that will be replaced soonish.

JP is there any new word on the HR model for GTR33 yet? I'll probably get slightly softer springs than standard this time if the ones I got before are anything to go by.

    • Maf is a question mark but TPS  I have set at 0.47, the fact that I’m getting proper voltage range out of it with the key on leads me to believe it’s functioning properly. I’m getting proper voltages on basically everything. I still need to look up voltage ranges for z32 maf and test that 
    • Honestly no not at all, but it’s a very basic tune, it’s stock injectors q45 tps and z32 maf. Other than that it’s a completely stock base map. The file is from nistune and from my understanding if it was tune related I would be able to unplug maf and tps and it would still start even if it was a really shitty start. I have tried starting it with coolant temp, maf, and tps unplugged none of those 3 togethor or individually changes anything

    • What does it look like with highway driving? And yes, I had a similar thought as Duncan. It looks quite similar in my Stagea and I have made myself accept it as normal. Might have to look into it some day   Highway gets as low as 10l/100km on my end so I'm not as worried about it being a mechanical issue. More likely just the tune on the haltech.
    • While I was waiting for the new parts to come in for the charge pipe and radiator I decided to do some turbo modification. The drive pressure (exhaust backpressure) was a lot higher that I thought it should be. For 32lbs of boost drive was 55lbs. The turbine housing is a 1.10AR and my turbo builder has suggested to go to a 1.25AR. To test if a larger AR would do anything to reduce drive pressure AND not spend any money I decided to hog out the divider in my current housing. I removed it from the inlet and the whole way through the housing.  After reassembly and testing it doesn't look like this modification did anything for reducing drive pressure or requiring more fuel (making more power). Oh well, it was worth a shot. We'll get some data at the track if it makes it past the 60ft. I also machined a $7 shift knob off Amazon to fit my Stillway shifter since I didn't like the Stillway shift knob. Next on the list was the radiator replacement and fabrication of a new intercooler tube that had no silicon coupler. No pictures of this - I was short on time each night after work to get this done and didn't stop to take pictures.  Next was to get the clutch disks out and replaced. Previously when installing the dogbox I had ordered a set of the same sintered iron disks I had been running because I switched to the 26-spline input shaft. I thought it was odd that they didn't have any markings or brand name on them like all my old disks had but installed them anyway. At the track I could not get the clutch to lock up using my normal strategies. After two track nights I reached out to the clutch manufacturer and ask their thoughts. They said they had to switch the material out because they were having trouble getting the original material and that this new material would not take to being slipped very well.  So out with the first set of 26-spline disks and in with the correct material 26-spline disks. While I had the trans out I added an inspection/service hole. I've wanted one of these for a while. Now I can have a look at things and change the front cover shimming when needed (clutch wear). I hustled and got the clutch change done in a few hours on a Saturday. Hopped in the car and drove home. On the way home I did a 1-3 pull. When shifting from 2nd to 3rd the core plug in the back of the cylinder head popped out and dumped all the coolant. Thankfully I was only 30 seconds from home and coasted it there. Datalog showed nothing unusual and 2.5psi of coolant pressure. That plug has been in there since 1992 but I guess it worked its way out. Pulled the trans AGAIN and replaced the plug, JB welded it in, and made a brace. Also deleted the head drain I had added in during the bearing issue fiasco.  I am currently changing my boost control plumbing to make it cleaner. After that is done I'll make another attempt at getting past the 60.
