I'm sending in my application this week to import a 1990 GTR under the 15 year rule. I will keep this post up to date with my progress either way it goes but I'm confident it will be accepted and my car will join the rest of you on the wharves of Japan.

very interesting!

have you already bought the car???

im sure many people will keep a close eye on this thread..

I wonder if buying a 1990 gtr in 2005 will fall under the same category as buying a 1990 gtr in 2004?

GOOD LUCK!

MAY THE FORCE BE WITH YOU!

what month 2005? I reckon they will have no problem allowing you a Jan 05 car. Anything else may be a different story. Best of luck though.

Richard

It's a January 1990 build. I bought the car before any public announcement by DOTARS was made regarding the changes to the 15year rule. I believe that gives me some leverage should they change it in the next 15 days (6 of which are either weekends and public hols). I also contacted them (DOTARS) about the pending changes and basically all they could elaborate on is if I bought and transfered the money before the changes were announced publicly (not via heresay from other sources) then the current arrangement is I will be granted approval on those grounds.

Hey, you can only try and if I get it through I save myself sh*tloads than putting through SEVS.

I was told yesterday that the current 15 year old system is being scrapped. However 15y/o will be allowed if the compliance people are a RAW(registered automotive workshop). This info came from my brother who works at a RAW. this should greatly reduce the amount of people who can do the compliance work, hence they will be increasing the charges for their 15 y/o compliance work.

Yeah? I heard that rumour on here a couple of months back. Something similar along the lines that your brother told you. The public were going to be told officially next month, that was back in October, now it's December and guess what? No changes announced.

Until it's announced publicly it's a rumour as far as I'm concerned.

Ok. 1st update. DoTars have received my application and I'm $50 lighter. I realise they take the money no matter what the decision but something's happening at least. Will have to wait until mid January I suspect for any kind of paperwork etc.

You'll get it a few days after the $50 is debited.

When did you send it off by the way? I thought you had to wait until the 1st of that month? That's what I did anyway... express post.

I've also got another Feb model to process, may do that earlier too like you did. I don't think 1st of Jan will be the end of the 15yr rule anyway. I'm thinking a couple/few months into 2005 most likely! Not long til we know for sure anyway :(

Does anyone know when (the date) the last 15yr import rule came into effect? The one that stated it had to come in on its month of build?

Nah, you don't HAVE to wait until the build month is up, the VIA for my december build GTR was sent, approved and back into my hands in November.

Well after Jan 1990 they may also go "let the cars in no problem but it has to go through a RAW" to the people who have been sitting on them for a while or for cars that might not be eligable it is one of the options we are worried about.

I know of one importer who has 60 cars sitting and waiting.

Spagman - I sent it off on the 16th December. I was kind of counting on DoTars receiving it and processing it before NY to clear backlogs. Only time will tell if this will be the case.

mmmgtir - Hopefully mine is the same as yours.

RiverSide - You're correct on that, I've been following this closely since August '03.

DRIFTT - I've been told that the depending on when the IA is given as to what law / rule is applied to the vehicle. Sort of like moving the goal posts after you've taken the mark but I'm quite sure you have more of an insight than I do into these things being in the business and all.

Merry Christmas to you folks. I'll keep you posted on what happens next.

The biggest thing I worry about with sending a car with out an approval is the storage fee's as they put them up because so many people were sending cars with out approvals,

I did one up on Monday arvo for a Dealer and he got it on Friday, that is quick so they must of cleared the back log.

Yea if they pull that "go through raws" crap then I'd still be screwed, as it's a locally delivered model.

There would be A LOT of angry people if they make anyone that has payed before 1st of Jan 2005 go through the new impending laws.

Is it even legal for them to apply these rules to people that have purchased these 90 models before 2005? Sure they can use scare tactics and ask ppl not to buy them, but how can a new law apply to people that went about their purchases through the old law?

If they're worried about their workload now, imagine when they're fighting legal battles/complaints/counter-complaints with hundreds of buyers. :D;);)

Subject:15 Year Rule Update -- 26th December 2004

[/color]

dot.gifDOTARS have not made any announcements before the end of 2004, therefore it can be assumed that any January 1990 models purchased between now and early January will be eligible for import from 1st January 2005.

The wording on the DOTARS website relating to a possible change in the 15 year rule warns not to pre-buy 1990 models before the end of the 2004. Given the fact that no change has eventuated before the end of 2004, in our opinion this warning now becomes defunct and pre-buying 1990 models of any month for import in 2005 again becomes a viable and fairly low risk option.

Should the rules change at some time in 2005, there is a very good case for obtaining an import approval for a 1990 model of any month, providing of course that the Japanese yen cost of the vehicle (FOB amount) is paid for prior to DOTARS announcing any changes to the 15 year rule.

For more detail or specific questions, please contact DOTARS directly.

    • Hi from Canada, Both of my calipers are starting to fail. My car is a 2005 M35 Stagea ARX and I can't seem to find any parts or any cross reference caliper that would fit my car. Is there a company or a similar caliper that would fit and I could replace the OEM one. Or if anyone knows where I can find a new OEM. Any help is very appreciated. Let me know!
    • Maf is a question mark but TPS  I have set at 0.47, the fact that I’m getting proper voltage range out of it with the key on leads me to believe it’s functioning properly. I’m getting proper voltages on basically everything. I still need to look up voltage ranges for z32 maf and test that
    • Honestly no not at all, but it’s a very basic tune, it’s stock injectors q45 tps and z32 maf. Other than that it’s a completely stock base map. The file is from nistune and from my understanding if it was tune related I would be able to unplug maf and tps and it would still start even if it was a really shitty start. I have tried starting it with coolant temp, maf, and tps unplugged none of those 3 togethor or individually changes anything

    • What does it look like with highway driving? And yes, I had a similar thought as Duncan. It looks quite similar in my Stagea and I have made myself accept it as normal. Might have to look into it some day   Highway gets as low as 10l/100km on my end so I'm not as worried about it being a mechanical issue. More likely just the tune on the haltech.
