Hi, recently there has been a spate of car thefts being highlighted in the forums. As such, someone here please give some valuable advice on alarms/immobilisers/club-locks?

For example, how many points of immobiliser do we need on our cars to make it really safe? I was told if I have a turbo timer on the car, I can only have a 1-pt immobiliser. Is that true?

As for steering wheel locks, are they of any use? I see the price range for these locks as low as $8 up to as high as $100. What's the difference?

hmmm...interesting. can someone shed light on this. lets say someone has one of those turbotimer harnesses and an alarm installed, how easy would it be for a thief to just unplug the harness and rewire??

milti kill switches seem to be quite effective, though i still have to figure out how to do one exactly..lol

and as for the club locks, you do actually get what you pay for. some snap lik twigs in the right spot with the right amount of leverage. i personally still use a club lock as a visual deterent ontop of my alarm so it makes them think twice so they find another car that will take less time to nick.

Well I have a turbo timer and a 3 pt immobiliser, and they work just fine together.

My alarm is designed for cars with turbo timers though.

In regards to hotwiring the car from harness, I don't know if you can. I don't know if there are any constant power wires down there.... but if there were, I'd assume it would be easier to figure out what each wire is for on the steering column.

I use a clublock ($70 i think) as a visual deterrant, as well as a remote alarm immobiliser. I also have a 1 point keypad immobiliser which i got from jaycar for $60 which adds to the visual deterrant factor a bit i think.

I have a turbo timer too but i dont see how hotwiring the turbo timer would help someone steal the car. If i leave my car somewhere im not really worried about it getting stolen, im more worried about it being keyed or someone breaking into it.

yeh true. but they do care about their heads and if someone gvies em a kickbox to the head then maybe they will learn their lesson? prolly not but its a nice thought none the less..

Some simple advice. Buy a heavy duty clublock and put it on backward so the lock is facing your instrument cluster. The most common way they are broken is with a screw welded onto the back of a hammer. They srew it into the lock and pull out the whole locking barrel. If you put the clublock on with the lock facing the instrument cluster this method of breaking them is impossible!

Not all steering wheels can accomodate reversing the lock... as the airbag/centre of the wheel is in the way.

prolly the same as ferni's BUT if you're 400m away, shitloads of damage could already be done by the time you respond to it and actually get to your car...

if you cant clearly read your plates, you're out of range :P

The number one security measure is not to leave your car somewhere where it is prone to vandalism or too much foot traffic.

You can have the fanciest alarm money can buy and it won't stop a tow truck.

Multi point immobilizers are good but make sure you have good back up service to go with it as once it is out of warranty and you have a problem who do you think will pay for that?

What is more important, A turbo timer or a fuel pump kill circuit?

A club Lock is a good visual deterrant, it is also amazing that you can cut through the steering wheel itself to remove a lock with zero effort.

I would guess from my experience that 95% of alarm installs are badly fitted and would take a matter of minutes to bypass regardless of being all black wiring as they mostly go to the standard wiring on the ignition loom.

And with all that said if they cant steal it they will most likely break it.

Can any of you sit through a movie in a cinema with your pride and joy sitting in a car park?? NO, that's what drive ins are for.

When I am out shopping I will return to the car to check its OK if i am gone for longer than 30 odd minutes. If im gonna be longer that's what someone elses car is for.

Personally i think you should have a good alarm to operate your door locks and kill the starter motor and a transponder immobilizer to kill other non mentionable circuits for real security. more than 3 points is asking for trouble. any visual deterrant is good.

Are wheel clamps expensive?!!!

Mabe a nice steel cable to the nearest lamp post!!

    • I checked the injectors again (1 and 2, since they’re easiest to access) to make sure they weren’t clogged. Even though the entire fuel system had been cleaned, I wanted to be certain. Everything looked clean, so I reinstalled and connected everything. When I started the car to confirm everything was okay, it immediately revved up high, so I shut it off straight away. I checked to see if I’d missed a vacuum hose or something, but everything was connected. On the second attempt, the car ran without the high idle, but I noticed a distinct “compressed air” sound coming from the engine bay. Tracing the sound, I pushed injector #6 forward slightly and the noise stopped — it turned out it wasn’t seated properly, despite the fuel rail being bolted down. While holding it in place, the car idled steadily without stalling and ran for over 5 minutes. At this point, I pulled all six injectors out just in case I hadn’t seated them correctly or dirt had gotten onto the O-rings. Unfortunately, I discovered that I had damaged 3 out of 6 injectors (the OEM 270cc ones) during installation. So yes, this was my fault. Since only the pintle caps were damaged, I’ve ordered a Fuel Injector Service Kit from NZEFI to refurbish them. In the meantime, I reinstalled my new injectors – the car now idles fine for over 15 minutes without stalling. I have not attempted to drive it so far. It’s not perfect yet, as it hesitates when the throttle is pressed, but it’s a big improvement. Unplugging the IACV with the new injectors idles at around 800rpm, even with the IACV screw tightened fully. But this is probably due to tune.
    • I wanted to try and preserve the front bumper as long as possible, they're not cheap and are made to order in Japan. Taking inspiration from my previous K11 Micra build where I made an undertray for the Impul bumper, I did the same for this BN Sports bumper but a little slimmed down.  This time round I only made a 'skid plate' (if that's the correct wording/term) for just the bumper surface area, the Micra version covered the gap like an undertray. Starting off with a sheet of mild steel approx. 0.9mm thick 4ft x 2ft in size. I traced around the bumper, cut it out and cleaned the edges. Luckily I was able to get two halves from one piece of metal In the video I installed it as is, but I've since then I've removed it to spray and add a rubber edging trim. The rubber trim is suitable for 1-2mm and it's a really nice tight fit. The bolts had to be loosened due to the plates being too tight against the bumper, the trim wouldn't push on I used some stainless M6 flat headed bolts for a flusher finish (rather than hex heads poking down), I believe this style fastener is used for furniture too incase you struggle to source some. The corner's are a little wider, but this may be an advantage incase I get close to bumping it  The front grill got some attention, finally getting round to repairing it. Upon removal one fixing pulled itself out of the plastic frame, one side is M8 that fixes inside of the frame, where as the other side is M5. Not knowing I could get replacements, I cut down an M8 bolt, threaded it inside the frame along with a decent amount of JB Weld.  The mesh was replaced to match the bumper. One hole on the bonnet/hood had to be drilled out to 8mm to accommodate the new stud, once the glue had set it could be refitted. I think the reason the grill was double meshed was to hide the horn/bonnet latch (which makes sense) but I much prefer it matching the bumper Bumper refitted and it's looking much better IMO The Youtube video can be seen here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bVZP35io9MA

There's nothing wrong with having coloured silicone hoses, but I realise as I'm getting older I prefer monotone engine bays with a splash of colour on the engine cover(s). I cover this in a lot more detail in the Youtube video, so unfortunately there's limited photos of the process. The intercooler, upper radiator, boost vacuum and upper breather hoses were all changed to black silicone with mikalor clamps. The only blue left is a blanking cap at the back of the inlet manifold and the GReddy pulleys (which will be replaced for stock when the cambelt gets replaced) While the intercooler pipes were off I gave them a quick clean/polish too A before photo I do have a replacement air filter on its way.
