Where to Live...

Hey guys and gals,

there is a very very high possiblity i will be moving to Sydney for work in the very near future. Just wanting to get some info from you locals and find out where everyone lives and if its not to personal, roughly what sort of rent id be looking at for that area. Will be working in the city and dont mind commuting but at the same time dont want to be on a bus/train for an hour there and back.

Only really need a 1 maybe 2 bedroom as its just me and my girlfriend. Would like a decent area but am not overlly fussy.

Im sorry this may be a really broad question but i cant really be anymore specific. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

well I live on the lower north shore and like it there. about 25mins to the city by public transport or 20 by car. rent for a nice 2 bedroom place would be around 350 upwards. If something a little more trendy and closer to the city is more your thing you should look at the inner west:

stanmore

enmore

newtown

leichardt

etc

are all good. I've just bought an appartment in stanmore that will be up for rent soon. looking for around 380 for it. 2 bedroom plus lock up garage etc.

best you start looking at real estate sites to get a feel for things.

Goon i realise that but i just want to get an idea of where some people live an roughly what it would cost to live there.

I only moved to oz 18 months ago, and about 12 months ago bought a place down in sutherland shire, just outside of sutherland, 3 bed, double garage, 650 Sqm corner block, pool, nice cathedral type cedar celings, paid 580k, then spent another $30k on rennovations ... worth in excess of 650 now aparently ....

sister in law is also looking to purchase a flat closer to the city, ashfield type area, shes looking about $300k for a nice 1 - 2 bed apartment with parking space ... seem to be a lot of them around for that sort of $

places in Manly/Harboard/Dee Why on the northern beaches are going for 350 upwards for a nice 2 bedroom apartment.

The Northern Beaches are a fantastic place to live. fairly laid back lifestyle, beaches close by and a generally safe area.

Bus to the city would be around 45 mins I would think or if you live in Manly you can get the ferry across to the city. wouldn't be a bad way to get to work each day

Teh inner west rules!

I've lived eastern subs, western subs, lower north shore & now the inner west since I moved to Sydney at the end of '96. I'd say that the west subs have the lowest living expenses, the lower north shore was the most green (established parks & trees everywhere), the eastern subs are close to beach without being far from the city & the inner west is the most fun & conveniently close to the city.

300 - 400 for a newish 2 bedder & security car space. I share a 3br, 1y.o. apt in Leichhardt that costs 440 between the three of us but I want to move further in (Newtown, Camperdown)
