It will be easier to tune the PowerFC for a smooth respectible drive with good economy over a map based link with crappy interpolation and load points.

Finding people that can give a link a tune to its potential is real hard in oz and you are limited to who you can try.

A powerfc is the first logical choice for an RB motor, or autronic/motec if the budget is larger.

put it in a car for which plug and plays arent sold?

Let's see.....some examples that I have seen;

70 Series Supra using a 100 series Chaser PFC

An S1 RX7 using an S6 PFC

R31GTSR using an R32GTR PFC

EF Civic using a DC2 Integra PFC

It's all about the engine, the wiring harness and the sensors. :P

Western Australians are lucky, as we have an expert who tunes Link ECUs.

DCIEVE's car is testimate to this.

And who would that be..........

Lets see if its the same clown who tuned mine and just blew up my mates motor ....

Dan

SK, find me someone in WA who will put a pfc in my car and i will do it. I spent close to a year shopping for ecu's. Options came down to Wolf, Autronics or Link. I was wary of the lack of people willing to tune wolf, and i couldnt justify the autronics for the 50% extra cost over the Link, as i've said it does a respectable job in mine and countless other cars.

Imacl8, if you have a grudge take it up with the tuner this is not the place.

haha Douche,

Fcuk highway kilometres.  I was talking CITY driving, because thats where it fcuks you the hardest.

Highway my fuel consumption is no problems.

There is no need to get angry.

all thats being provded is a SLAB of useful info that would suggest there is better ECU's than a link for the price :P

imacul8, the link plus has all the features you claim it doesn't including temp correction.. does the power fc?  runs the std knock sensor also.  The ecu comparison link you posted up fails to list most of the links features...

you also fail to mention how many countless hours the holinger equipped car you mention spent on the dyno at west racing?

I agree its far from the best ecu on the market but it does a good job in mine and countless other cars and for the dollars you can't complain.

Nismoid your initial comment on the subject is laughable, shit if everyone on the forum isnt using it, it must be crap.. ? Well done

i can allay testiment to how well nicks car drives and performs.. all using a link ecu.

i couldnt fault driveability, but i dont live with it every day and therefore cant tell you about economy etc.

it took alot of balls for nick to go out and use a relatively unused and unproven ecu here in wa.. respect to him. his is an example of a successful link ecu installation.. granted there may be links which have not cut the mustard. personal experience counts for alot, and its obvious sk has had negative experiences

shame the controllers are dog ugly things :P

At the end of the day you have to settle for what you want...

My opinion about the Auto issue is:

1. Full manual set up for the transmission

2. Get a PFC if you know a good tuner

I have to agree that there are alot more people in the Eastern States willing to tune a PFC versus a Link. But I am sure someone in Perth is able to tune a PFC and you don't have to resort to a Link that was originally designed by Possum to run on offroad WRX's...

This system is not designed to run your daily driver to the drivability of the standard ECU, it won't it can't so build the bridge.

The PFC has greater background and research and is designed for driveability AND tuneability that the Link is not...end of story!!

"Put it in the car" is easy, unplug standard ECU and plug in PFC, all you need is a 10mm spanner and 5 minutes. I have yet to find a car that doesn't start and run first turn of the key.

As for tuning, with the PFC 90% of the work is done. It already has all of the tricky stuff loaded, cold start and run, hot start, over run, afm calibration, idle speeds, lambda calibration, air con, power steer and electrical load compensation etc . All the tuning that takes hours and sometimes days to get right is done out of the box.

So it is a simply a matter of tuning for power (fuel and ignition) and the PFC is no different to any other ECU in that regard, it has load points and settings. The first time our dyno guy tuned a car with a PFC he sat and read the Commander manual (yes the RX7 one and he was tuning a Skyline) for about 20 minutes. He then put the car on the dyno and started tuning with the Commander. Result, 45 minutes later a perfectly tuned car. In the last 12 months or so we have been using a Datalogit on the laptops and he can tune most Skylines in ~20 minutes.

I taught a guy in the US over the phone how to tune a PFC, he had the RX7 Commander Manual and we went through it. He picked it up without much help from me, 'cause I am not a good tuner. His comment to me was "you mean I don't have to set it it up?" Nope, just start tuning. "Shoot man, what a snap".

There are some great tuners in WA, I simply don't believe that they couldn't work with a PFC, because it isn't really any different to any other ECU. Just easier than most, as it is very well set up for the model of car it is designed for. Let's face it there are more and more PFC's arriving everyday, so the tuner that does the best job will get lots of work.

:P

PS; doesn't Lumpy do PFC's?

No grudge at all - I have no idea who tuned your car - thats why I asked .......... and I didn't bring shit up - I just mearly asked who tuned your car......

So who did it - cause it may be different to who did mine?

Dan

You can tune a PFC over there no worries.

many places can do em

My point was, there isnt a plugin for the hr31 skyline. There are plenty of people to tune the PFC but how do i install a plugin designed for a different car?? SK you seem to have thrown them in everything so let us know how if its so easy. Like I said i spent ALOT of time looking around, at the time there was NO plugins for a HR31. As far as i know there still isnt. However thats besides the point, the man asked for opinions on the Link and i gave mine as a person who lives with a link equipped car.

Imacl8, car was initially tuned by leigh at RMS and lately Hyperdrive have been looking after it while we try to iron out a few problems with the motor. I wont go into your grievances with Leigh but suffice to say he certainly isnt the clown;)

hhahahahhahahahahahahahaha

No worries champ - LINK power

TJ

Theres no problem at all ....... i hope people don't think that.

We were talking about ECU's - DECIEVE said he was happy with his I asked who tuned it.

I didn't air any grievances or name any workshops did I.

I think it's a excellent thread about ECU's.

Dont make something out of nothing TOM.

What engine are you runing in the HR31?

If it is an RB20DET then use an R32 GTST Power FC with an R32GTST engine harness

If it is an RB26DETT then use an R32 GTR Power FC with an R32GTR engine harness

If it is an RB25DET then use an R32 GTST Power FC with an R33GTST engine harness

That's the method that I have found to be the simplest. There are so many half cuts around, getting an engine harness hasn't proven to be a problem. The only other trick is making sure you use ALL of the right sensors for the Power FC model.

As for the Link question, I am not sure what else I should have done. If only people with Links respond to his question, he is only ever going to get half the story. And I don't think that is why he asked the question. The other problem is I might be very happy with my ECU, until I drive a a similar car with another brand ECU and find out that mine is not as good as I thought. Lastly, people are sometime reluctant to say that they made a mistake and bought the wrong thing. (Not in any way suggesting that this is the situation in your case.) After all they have to sell their car one day and it won't help if they rubbish it along the way.

My 20 cents worth :P

then its not truly a plug and play ecu is it? i think people expect plug and play to be just that.. pnp

wasnt tyring to mate, just sounded like we where about to go down a familiar road.. my apologies

have you actually bothered to read any of the thread, or just my post?

read some more before you go oh wow ill tell him what he already knows

im well aware that they are pnp for the car they are made for, sk was saying that to make it pnp on nicks car, he would have to change a few things... thats no longer pnp is it

    • This. As for your options - I suggest remote mounting the Nissan sensor further away on a length of steel tube. That tube to have a loop in it to handle vibration, etc etc. You will need to either put a tee and a bleed fitting near the sensor, or crack the fitting at the sensor to bleed it full of oil when you first set it up, otherwise you won't get the line filled. But this is a small problem. Just needs enough access to get it done.
    • The time is always correct. Only the date is wrong. It currently thinks it is January 19. Tomorrow it will say it is January 20. The date and time are ( should be ! ) retrieved from the GPS navigation system.
    • Buy yourself a set of easy outs. See if they will get a good bite in and unthread it.   Very very lucky the whole sender didn't let go while on the track and cost you a motor!
    • Well GTSBoy, prepare yourself further. I did a track day with 1/2 a day prep on Friday, inpromptu. The good news is that I got home, and didn't drive the car into a wall. Everything seemed mostly okay. The car was even a little faster than it was last time. I also got to get some good datalog data too. I also noticed a tiny bit of knock which was (luckily?) recorded. All I know is the knock sensors got recalibrated.... and are notorious for false knock. So I don't know if they are too sensitive, not sensitive enough... or some other third option. But I reduced timing anyway. It wasn't every pull through the session either. Think along the lines of -1 degree of timing for say, three instances while at the top of 4th in a 20 minute all-hot-lap session. Unfortunately at the end of session 2... I noticed a little oil. I borrowed some jack stands and a jack and took a look under there, but as is often the case, messing around with it kinda half cleaned it up, it was not conclusive where it was coming from. I decided to give it another go and see how it was. The amount of oil was maybe one/two small drops. I did another 20 minute session and car went well, and I was just starting to get into it and not be terrified of driving on track. I pulled over and checked in the pits and saw this: This is where I called it, packed up and went home as I live ~20 min from the track with a VERY VERY CLOSE EYE on Oil Pressure on the way home. The volume wasn't much but you never know. I checked it today when I had my own space/tools/time to find out what was going on, wanted to clean it up, run the car and see if any of the fittings from around the oil filter were causing it. I have like.. 5 fittings there, so I suspected one was (hopefully?) the culprit. It became immediately apparent as soon as I looked around more closely. 795d266d-a034-4b8c-89c9-d83860f5d00a.mp4       This is the R34 GTT oil sender connected via an adapter to an oil cooler block I have installed which runs AN lines to my cooler (and back). There's also an oil temp sensor on top.  Just after that video, I attempted to unthread the sensor to see if it's loose/worn and it disintegrated in my hand. So yes. I am glad I noticed that oil because it would appear that complete and utter catastrophic engine failure was about 1 second of engine runtime away. I did try to drill the fitting out, and only succeeded in drilling the middle hole much larger and now there's a... smooth hole in there with what looks like a damn sleeve still incredibly tight in there. Not really sure how to proceed from here. My options: 1) Find someone who can remove the stuck fitting, and use a steel adapter so it won't fatigue? (Female BSPT for the R34 sender to 1/8NPT male - HARD to find). IF it isn't possible to remove - Buy a new block ($320) and have someone tap a new 1/8NPT in the top of it ($????) and hope the steel adapter works better. 2) Buy a new block and give up on the OEM pressure sender for the dash entirely, and use the supplied 1/8 NPT for the oil temp sender. Having the oil pressure read 0 in the dash with the warning lamp will give me a lot of anxiety driving around. I do have the actual GM sensor/sender working, but it needs OBD2 as a gauge. If I'm datalogging I don't actually have a readout of what the gauge is currently displaying. 3) Other? Find a new location for the OEM sender? Though I don't know of anywhere that will work. I also don't know if a steel adapter is actually functionally smart here. It's clearly leveraged itself through vibration of the motor and snapped in half. This doesn't seem like a setup a smart person would replicate given the weight of the OEM sender. Still pretty happy being lucky for once and seeing this at the absolute last moment before bye bye motor in a big way, even if an adapter is apparently 6 weeks+ delivery and I have no way to free the current stuck/potentially destroyed threads in the current oil block.
