Cable Ties, anything they can't do???

Recommended Posts

What can i say?

P.I will always stand out for a different reason than just my first SAU cruise. Had a great drive down, but then god spoke to me, he said, "Chris, you need a decent kit", and sure enough, right then and there an angelic messenger was sent in the form of a vn station wagon (with a trailer full of dirt), gracefully parting me from the heathen stock front bar.

Divine intervention maybe, but he did also sent a miracle worker, a true Macguyver-esque saint, known only as 'AL'.

I have to send out a massive thanks to everyone that helped out yesterday, as you saw from the mess, there was no way i'd make it back to melbourne, and I really appreciate all of your efforts. The bar held true on the trip back and while it may take a few weeks to get it all replaced, the car is perfectly drivable and is a great weight off my mind.

Saff Cossie, I wasn't sure what I do if the bar didn't fit in your car, I was about 10 seconds off snapping it in half and throwing it in the back and also for running and getting the gaffa tape from the hardware store, you're a top bloke.

_________, for the miracle cable ties. I'll have a replacement pack for you at the meeting. Hopefully you didn't need any yesterday arvo, but they did save my neck. (sorry, i missed your name, could someone please edit for me?)

Lukas & Scott (Let me drive), thanks for the comic relief and the escort back to melb. I should have bought a better quality cb!

To the boys in the Subaru Forester (i think), that's for the offer to take the bar back to melbourne for me, would have been great if not for our great Vice-Prez

Al, I can't thank you enough mate, the detail that you went into yesterday was amazing, i wasn't too concerned about the indicators working, but now i don't have to worry about being defected (well, for that at least) You went above and beyond and it really shows. (Although it does look funny having 4000 cable ties under the bonnet.

For anyone that i missed, (cus there was a lot of you) and to the club as a whole, thanks again, for the help, use of your tools or even a "man that sucks", eased my pain... :D

I was incredibly lucky in that the other guy was a good bloke. He admitted fault straight away, helped get the bar reinforcement off the car and processed the claim within 2 hours.

Now, to find a few decent panel beaters in the area that will be able to get these parts in the not too near distant future.... i'll keep you posted.

I've got some 'good' pics, but can't upload them at the moment, I'll do it at work on tuesday.

Thanks again :D

Chris, no worries at all. Glad to be able to help and was just gutted that it had happened. And after all what are we in a club for, if not to help each other out. Keep us posted with the repair and looking forward to seeing the car with the new kit.

No worries Chris. We were discussing what a good sport you are. I f it had happened to my car, I don't think I would have taken it as well as you did! LOL!

Your intro to this thread is funny too! So true... everytime we catch up you are always saying to me "I love your front bar, I've gotta get a kit"

Make sure you get a couple of qoutes like we discussed, 'coz you will be able to get a really nice front bar as cheap or cheaper than a stock one (if you get a qoute fron Nissan etc.)

Take it easy mate... :D

Considering how upset i was to find ants on the car, i think i composed my self quite well.

I was pretty pissed at first, then realised that getting annoyed isn't going to do any good. I was actually taken aback by the help offered yesterday from the club. It's the first time i've been in a prang, and must say, it went "well", cept for the whole 'smashed car element'. If it'd happened while i was by myself, it would have been a much different story.

Having the front bar back on helps my pride a lot. The looks people gave me driving to the track (sans front) were a bit painful, but now i just look like a clumsy driver with a few nasty scrapes and dints. :)

It does help that i had already factored in getting a new front bar, its just annoying to drive around a banged up car for a few weeks when i take a lot of pride in it. Ah well, the greater good will prevail, nobody got hurt, and fingers crossed, i get a decent assessor and a nice new front bar :)

*aparently the pics are too big to upload, so just have a look in my gallery.

Good to hear all is reasonable well ;), considering the situation.

Was really hoping that the wind drag wouldn't pull your bar off at 100km, hence the ample amount of cable ties :).

Just remember you have no reo behind that cosmetic front bar, so be a little more careful and keep your distance from the car in front.

- You need a new indicator assy, as the plug is damaged

- Front bar reo.

- Front bar

- The reo mounts/chassis need to be repaired as I noticed the mounting nut has been ripped off the chassis.

- Passenger headlight. If you get a new pair, I will be very interested in buying your old driver's side headlight ;).

- Guard needs to be repainted, as headlight has chipped the paint.

These are just the things I noticed while cable tying the bar to the car

If you need to source parts try Nissan dealerships first (Furntree Gully is good with our cars), also can try UPI: (03)9555 3611, for second hand parts.

Sad to see your first cruise, with us, started with your car being damaged ;), but such things are unavoidable and I was happy to help my fellow skyline enthusiast.

C YA SOON :)

Alan

Sorry to hear about the prang.

Speaking of cable ties, i woke up Saturday morning down at the island, cleaning out my car, when i noticed that the screws holding the fire extinguisher had sheered through the mounting plate. Too many people adjusting the seat, and the weight of the thing had forced a screw to strip the alluminum strip i had between the seat rails =(

Thought my day was going to be short lived at that point. Decided to head down to the track anyway. Managed to scab some cable ties, and clamped the bracket and the strip together. The scrutineer gave me more grief about the 2nd screw, which he thought was a rivot from a distance.

Didnt mind the cable ties so much. Told me No rivots in motorsport; nuts and bolts only, and failing that would seem cable ties.

...

back to the accident, you shouldnt have too much trouble with series 1 r33 parts. They are lot more parts around than series 2. There is a list of parts shops here somewhere. New bar should be easy to find advertised. Let your fingers do the walking, as prices vary on the other parts.

    • @Haggerty this is your red flag. In MAP based ECU's the Manifold pressure X RPM calculation is how the engine knows it is actually...running/going through ANY load. You are confusing the term 'base map' with your base VE/Fuel table. When most people say 'base map' they mean the stock entire tune shipped with the ECU, hopefully aimed at a specific car/setup to use as a base for beginning to tune your specific car. Haltech has a lot of documentation (or at least they used to, I expect it to be better now). Read it voraciously.
    • I saw you mention this earlier and it raised a red flag, but I couldn't believe it was real. Yes, the vacuum signal should vary. It is the one and only load signal from the engine to the ECU, and it MUST vary. It is either not connected or is badly f**ked up in some way.
    • @Haggerty you still haven't answered my question.  Many things you are saying do not make sense for someone who can tune, yet I would not expect someone who cannot tune to be playing with the things in the ECU that you are.  This process would be a lot quicker to figure out if we can remove user error from the equation.
    • If as it's stalling, the fuel pressure rises, it's saying there's less vacuum in the intake manifold. This is pretty typical of an engine that is slowing down.   While typically is agree it sounds fuel related, it really sounds fuel/air mixture related. Since the whole system has been refurbished, including injectors, pump, etc, it's likely we've altered how well the system is delivering fuel. If someone before you has messed with the IACV because it needed fiddling with as the fuel system was dieing out, we need to readjust it back. Getting things back to factory spec everywhere, is what's going to help the entire system. So if it idles at 400rpm with no IACV, that needs raising. Getting factory air flow back to normal will help us get everything back in spec, and likely help chase down any other issues. Back on IACV, if the base idle (no IACV plugged in) is too far out, it's a lot harder for the ECU to control idle. The IACV duty cycle causes non linear variations in reality. When I've tuned the idle valves in the past, you need to keep it in a relatively narrow window on aftermarket ecus to stop them doing wild dances. It also means if your base idle is too low, the valve needs to open too much, and then the smallest % change ends up being a huge variation.
    • I guess one thing that might be wrong is the manifold pressure.  It is a constant -5.9 and never moves even under 100% throttle and load.  I would expect it to atleast go to 0 correct?  It's doing this with the OEM MAP as well as the ECU vacuum sensor. When trying to tune the base map under load the crosshairs only climb vertically with RPM, but always in the -5.9 column.
