Hi all.

I am fitting my high flowed turbo this weekend. I took it off myself with a couple of hassles.

One bolt holding the dump onto the exhaust housing broke off and one was a hex head (allen key) bolt which required an allen key fitting for the socket set as an allen key itself didn't have enough room to swing.

Anyway, should I, could I replace the allen key bolt with a normal one or is there some reason for it being there that I can't see?

The replacement bolt for the one I twisted off, is it special?

Do I use locktite or anything like that anywhere, like the turbo to manifold bolts or the dump pipe to turbo exhaust housing bolts?

I lost a couple of the copper washers from the oil lines and water lines. I've been told that these things compress and that I should get all new ones anyway. Should I?

There seems to be two on each bolt right?

Who sells these? I've tried Auto1, Bunnings and GCG with no luck so far.

Am I alright to reuse the gaskets? They look ok. The turbo to manifold one is fairly new anyway cos I spat it about 6 months ago.

Should I be cleaning any parts out in any particular way while things are apart? When the stock turbo blew plenty of oil got burnt. Does any part of the exhaust need cleaning? It's all sort of brown on the inside instead of black.

And finally, while I have your attention, I noticed how easy it was to get the exhaust off. If I got a side pipe to replace the cat and cat back sections of the exhaust for track days, would it effect the tune and cause me problems or do you think I would get a few extra kilowatts out of it?

it's most likely that someone has previously broken/rounded/lost one and replaced it with the hex bolt thinking it would be easier to get off. you can replace it with a normal one no worries.

just take one of the other good bolts in when you go to buy the new ones and have them match it up

the ones that i've seen come loose are the tubo to manifold ones, generally there should be a little plate with locking tabs that you fold up to stop them coming un done but sometimes this plate is gone, and even with it they can still come un-done. a little locktite here wouldn't go astray.

I would they don't cost fark all. especially for the oil and water lines.

Lee brothers in para' date=' or coventry fasteners or earls in silverwater (won't have the bolts but will have washers)

up to you. If they are not to expensive I would just get new ones. is the manifold still on the head? or did you take turbo and mani off together? the head to mani one is expensive the others are not too bad.

it shouldn't affect the tune to badly, but a run on the dyno with it on wouldn't be a bad idea. dunno if you would get any power but as you know I have had one planned for mine for a while. :P steal my plan you bastid.

GCG should be able so sell you all the bits - if not, try UAS they usually stock these.

Get new gaskets - you can damage them when removing them - do it once , do it right. I tried to re-use the oil return gasket and I got a leak and had to do it all over again.

Use copper grease - not locktite

Yes replace the copper washers

Re Cat - no won't affect the tune and will give you substantially more power - trust me on that, but don't ask me how I know.

Have you got better front and dump pipes ?? eg CES Racing systems - these will make a big difference too.

I have already tried coventry. No go. Repco says they have the washers so I'll go there. They should have the bolts too wouldn't you think?

I couldn't believe GCG didn't have the washers!

I didn't take the manifold off. Turbo came off it easily despite several people warning me I would have to take the manifold off to get the turbo off.

Oil return gasket? Is that the one on the bottom of the turbo?

I've got the locking plate for the turbo to manifold bolts so no worries there.

I will try to fit in a dyno run without the cat back to test this theory for sure.

Of course I'll post up results Ben :P I'll be like, "Look I got 5 rwkw from a turbo upgrade" ;) (Best to talk it down to avoid disapointment)

man pay someone to do it would be like 150 bux

Was quoted $600 remove and replace. Get more satisfaction out of doing myself anyway. Also, it's already in pieces in my garage which is down a very steep slope so no tow truck is getting in there.

yeah coventry don't really specialise in automotive stuff. Lee brothers (which I posted above) will be your best bet. they are in parra.

good man getting it off without removing the mani cause that gasket is another $50+ alone.

Though it seems a bit odd. If the motor works itself, other than being noisy, then wouldn't it be more likely that it's an electrical issue somewhere else?     • I know this thread is quite old, but I found it, it helped me, but I also wanted to add my experience and troubleshooting finds to the chat for others. I have not been able to open the rear hatch of my 97 Stagea for several months. Figured it had just really sealed itself up over the winter and I would just get to it eventually. Well that day was yesterday. Some time ago, I noticed my battery was going flat all the time. It was frustrating. Then one quiet night in the garage, I could hear and ever so slight humming / grinding noise coming from the back of the car. It was like a really quiet popping sound or something like sand in a very low speed blender. I took off the panels in the back and noticed the noise coming from the auto close motor, so I unplugged it and the noise stopped. And the auto close was disabled. Well, fast forward to yesterday, I tried all the tricks with power and fuse and lock and unlock and I still could open the damn hatch. So I took off the panels from the inside and found the auto lock had engaged and was stuck in close position. When plugging and unplugging the fuse, I could hear the relay clicking. So I plugged the autoclose motor back in, and the damn thing let go. And immediately started making that grinding sound again. This time, instead of just unplugging the motor, I pulled the fuse, thus depowering the relay entirely. I don't have the autoclose feature now, but at least I can open the boot and not have my battery being sucked dead all the time. Not sure what caused the motor to latch when it was unplugged from the system, but I am pretty sure it won't cause any more problems now.  If anyone has a lead on a new motor, please let me know. It's a cool feature that I would like to get back.  Hope this helps.
    • Lolololol maybe, man I hate this car. Lapsed judgement a respray and a new motor, when I should have just scrapped the lot when I had the chance. Farken.
