Anyone using Pfitzner dog box internals in an R33 GTR / GTS-t casing? Independent opinions as to fit, quality, torque handling capacity, car usage et cetera welcome :) My mails to Pfitzner have been replied to slightly ambiguously, I am FAIRLY sure they do dog as well as synchro straight cut internal gear sets...

Thanks.

Hi Chris, if I remember rightly Theo uses a PPG dog box in his GTR for drag racing, mid 9's on radials. We use PPG dog boxes in the ciruit race cars, no problems after 2 years. Usual dog maintenance only. We are at 420+rwkw (around 650 bhp) from a 3.1 litre RB30/26. So it has LOTS of torque, way over 700 ft lbs at the flywheel.;)

I doubt Keir has done 60+ passes on the PPG, iirc that's the one of the first outings with the new gearbox. Last year he was running an OS6, and the year before the Hollinger.

Until there are more PPG units out in circulation I think it's a bit soon to be coming to any conclusions, especially in street/drag cars.

SydneyKid - Do you guys use the PPG's in 4WD as well as your 2WD? What ratio's in the box and diff, and what tires? What clutch setup?

There is 1 X PPG 5 Speed dog box in the 2wd with 4.3 diff ratio. The clutch is an OS Giken twin plate. It runs on 245/45/17 Yokohama A032R's. This box is farely new, it has only done 2.5 hours, that's a bit over 6,000 gear changes. The ratios are 2.621 / 1.637 / 1.240 / 1.000 / 0.839.

There is 1 X PPG 5 Speed dog box in the 4wd with 4.1 diff ratios. The clutch is an OS Giken triple plate. The ATTESSA has extra clutches as well as electronic torque split and launch. It also runs on 245/45/17 Yokohama A032R's. We have used A048R's on it for testing as well. This one has done nearly a full year of racing, that's 160 starts, 10 hours of racing and 25,000 or so gearchanges. It was serviced last year, just the usual bearings, dog engagement and seals replaced. Same as we do with the Hollingers in the V8Supercars. Sorry but I can't tell you the ratios in this box, but they are different to the 2wd above.

We also have a PPG 5 Speed dog box in the RX7, it has a Tilton 7" triple plate and a 5.3 diff ratio. We alternate between the PPG and the Modena as the gearing suites different circuits. For example we use the PPG at Wakefield Park, and Sandown and the Modena at Philip Island. The ratios are 2.527 / 1.805 / 1.381 / 1.155 / 1.000

Hope that helps:cheers:

Thanks for the info. What sort of weights are you guys at, I'm assuming they are both R32s? Does the 2WD use an RB25 box?

Sorry I can't tell you the weight of the GTR, competitive advantage......you understand...

The R32GTST runs an R33 GTST RB25DET gearbox. It weighs 1195 kgs currently, but is getting a new chrome molly cage, so that will go up 30 or so kgs.

SK what sort of service work is required for the dog boxes and are the dog rings a press/spline fit on the side of the mainshaft gears ?

Cheers A .

Honestly I have no idea, we don't service the PPG or Modena gearboxes in house. They go back to them for their scheduled servicing. We haven't broken one, so I haven't had to pull it down at a race meeting to find out/fix it. We did break a shifter on the RX7 Modena at Philip Island and Rowan turned up with a replacement in a couple of hours. That's what I call service!

Sk is that your GTR in the photo?

If by "yours" you mean "drive", Phil Coles drives the Production R32GTR for the race team, and Dave Loftus drives the team Improved Production R32GTR.

is that a vn commodore behind ur car?

That is the Production R32GTR N1, there is also an Improved Production R32GTR painted very similarly (same sponsor and car owner). So yes, that is a VN Commondoor, behind where it belongs.

Pop out to a round of the NSW State Championships and say hello.

    • Nice car! I’m glad folks in the US have gotten past the FnF and are buying real cool cars like the 260RS I was with a bunch of mates in Portland about a year ago and spotted a green Stagea (just a regular 2.5T AWD) parked about 2 blocks away and they were like “a what?” So I made a bet with them for a round of beers and said “ok one of you run down there and tell me if the steering wheel is on the correct side” 5 mins later the American comes trudging back up the hill and goes “he’s right guys. Ok what beer do you want?”
    • Should replace OR drop the tank, give it's good clean. Might be worth replacing that entire fuel level/pump/cradle thing with this: https://frenchysperformancegarage.com/products/fpg-s13-180sx-r32gtst-single-pump-hanger-kit-billet-hat-6-v3-fpg-089?gQT=2
    • Thank you so much for the help
    • Yes it is ATF. I quote @Duncan "it takes a good synthentic auto trans fluid like Castrol Transmax Z" It's not a diff. It's a transfer case. Totally different thing. Yes, fluid will come out the sender hole. No you do not really need to drain it. Just pull the old, quickly poke the new, clean up and top up. But realistically, you should probably take the opportunity to change it anyway.
    • Hey all. I’m looking on replacing my speed sensor on my R33 GTR. Will the center differential need to be drained, and if so, the center diff uses ATF fluid D? I found information on the transmission, front diff and rear diff. Can’t find a for sure answer for the center diff. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
