window tinting laws

when i received my car from japan it had the back three windows heavily tinted. i pulled it off thinking no way would it pass like that. but i had a thought (yes it hurt), if a car has both side mirrors like a van/ute or truck why cant it have heavy tinting on the rear windows only. you cant see out the back of the van i drive for work so what difference is there between a car with both side mirrors with one way tint or a van with both mirrors and no rear windows???

so im thinking of putting the g35 tint on the front side windows and a 20 tint on the back three windows.

does anyone know what the laws are on back window tint of a sedan that has both side mirrors???

i've been tinting for a few years now and the laws are a bit foggy in that area. T35 is the legal limit for the darkness of tint, but i got told a story that as long as you have 2 side mirrors you don't even need to be able to see out the back glass.(don't know how true it is so no-one crack the sh!ts at me) . but you've all seen the bongo vans getting around with curtains in the back and you cant see out at all in them and they don't seen to be targeted as a defect. i tinted mine in T35 3m black on the side glasses with 3m black T20 (darker) on the rear glass and across the top of the windscreen. no one has pulled me over . i did the same on my last car aswell. i wouldn't put it (T20)on the side glass , that's asking for trouble - cam

I've got crazy blacked out on the rear 3 windows and no tint on the front 2.

I've been engineered and blue slipped and noone said a thing.

Also I heard a thing about pre '89 (possibly) cars that apperantly the laws were different then and if your car made prior to that, you might have had the tints done back then so they can be darker. I'm not sure how true that is or what year it was but you might like to check this unless it's a NSW only thing (if at all true).

It makes sense though. Most trucks can't even see behind themselves with side mirrors and a full load!

I haven't got tinted windows, might do it one day, but i'd say for anyone to get done by the cops for having rear windows too dark, to contest it in a court and see what happens...

And then tell us here so we can all get really dark tints on the back....:wassup:

its a different story when u r on P's. My rear window is so dark that u can barely see my p plate. Ive been fined once for $100 and 3 points cause of this and warned twice. The cops didnt care about how dark the tint was, it was just that my p plate wasnt visible and they told me to display it elswhere.

I thought it was illegal to display plates in the window anyways, regardless of whether you can see them or not.

That was something I was told by my driving instructor (in 1997 / NSW)

Of course 'everyone' does it, and usually gets away with it...but I was just saying.

The new laws according to the RTA.. Says that you can ;)

"If placing P signs on windows, they must be held against the glass, be displayed conspicuously in lower left-hand (passenger) side of the windscreen and on the lower left-hand side of the rear facing window and must not be placed on any other part of the window area. something else i hafta think about is do i realy want my back windows different to my front windows or should i just have the legal tint all round so it dun look funny. if it was a two door id go dark on the back but its a four door so the back windows stand out just as much as the front.

hmmmm maybe i should start a poll.

It's a big no-no here in S.A. no window tinting allowed on side windows at all and only a light tint on rear and rear quarter windows.Regency pk checking center deems it silly to follow any of the nationalised rules or adr's and dictate what they want and when they want it. Any one coming to S.A. to live find out the hard way when the submit their cars for id checks re- transfer of reg to s.a. and they're handed a razor blade and asked to remove the tint before reg will be granted,(Another joy to living in the heaviest policed state in aust.)

im quite sure that p platers here in Vic arent even allowed to tow a trailer

Different states, different rules. In vic you have to display them in the window, in NSW dont you guys jam them behind the number plates or something? And in QLD they dont have to display them at all?

My friend had an accident the other day, not serious but someone rang the police. She got done for failing to give way (2 demerit points) and done for not showing her p plates (3 points). 5 points within a year is automatic licence suspension for p platers in vic.

      From there, it is really just test and assemble. Plug the adapter cables from the unit into the back of the screen, then the other side to the car harness. Don't forget all the other plugs too! Run the cables behind the unit and screw it back into place (4 screws) and you should now have 3 cables to run from the top screen to the android unit. I ran them along the DS of the other AV units in the gap between their backets and the console, and used some corrugated tubing on the sharp edges of the bracket so the wires were safe. Plug the centre console and lower screen in temporarily and turn the car to ACC, the AV should fire up as normal. Hold the back button for 3 sec and Android should appear on the top screen. You need to set the input to Aux for audio (more on that later). I put the unit under the AC duct in the centre console, with the wifi antenna on top of the AC duct near the shifter, the bluetooth antenna on the AC duct under the centre console The GPS unit on top of the DS to AC duct; they all seem to work OK there are are out of the way. Neat cable routing is a pain. For the drive recorder I mounted it near the rear view mirror and run the cable in the headlining, across the a pillar and then down the inside of the a pillar seal to the DS lower dash. From there it goes across and to one USB input for the unit. The second USB input is attached to the ECUtec OBD dongle and the 3rd goes to the USB bulkhead connected I added in the centre console. This is how the centre console looks "tidied" up Note I didn't install the provided speaker, didn't use the 2.5mm IPod in line or the piggyback loom for the Ipod or change any DIP switches; they seem to only be required if you need to use the Ipod input rather than the AUX input. That's it, install done, I'll follow up with a separate post on how the unit works, but in summary it retains all factory functions and inputs (so I still use my phone to the car for calls), reverse still works like factory etc.

      Place the new daughterboard in the case and mount it using the 3 small black rivets provided, and reconnect the 3 factory ribbon cables to the new board Then, use the 3 piggyback cables from the daughterboard into the factory board on top (there are stand offs in the case to keep them apart. and remember to reconnect the antenna and rear cover fan wires. 1 screw to hold the motherboard in place. Before closing the case, make a hole in the sticker covering a hole in the case and run the cable for the android unit into the plug there. The video forgot this step, so did I, so will you probably. Then redo the 4 screws on back, 2 each top and bottom, 3 each side and put the 2 brackets back on.....all ready to go and not that tricky really.

      Onto the android unit. You need to remove the top screen because there is a daughterboard to put inside the case. Each side vent pops out from clips; start at the bottom and carefully remove upwards (use a trim remover tool to avoid breaking anything). Then the lower screen and controls come out, 4 screws, a couple of clips (including 3 flimsy ones at the top) and 3 plugs on the rear. Then the upper screen, 4 screws and a bunch of plugs and she is out. From there, remove the mounting brackets (2 screws each), 4 screws on the rear, 2 screws top and bottom and 3 screws holding in the small plates on each side. When you remove the back cover (tight fit), watch out for the power cable for the fan, I removed it so I could put the back aside. The mainboard is held in by 1 screw in the middle, 1 aerial at the top and 3 ribbon cables. If you've ever done any laptop stuff the ribbon cables are OK to work with, just pop up the retainer and they slide out. If you are not familiar just grab a 12 year old from an iphone factory, they will know how it works The case should now look like this:

      Switching the console was tricky. First there were 6 screws to remove, and also the little adapter loom and its screws had to come out. Also don't forget to remove the 2 screws holding the central locking receiver. Then there are 4 clips on either side....these were very tight in this case and needed careful persuading with a long flat screw driver....some force required but not enough to break them...this was probably the fiddliest part of the whole job. In my case I needed both the wiring loom and the central locking receiver module to swap across to the new one. That was it for the console, so "assembly is the reverse of disassembly"
