It all depends on what else you have done. Be careful as a little change on the cam timing can make quite a big change to the AFR. Your best bet is to get the car on a dyno and work in small steps, monitoring the air/fuel ratios.

Just trying to clarify setting cam gears up....

what is the ideal setting?

4 advance on inlet side and 2 retard on exhaust?

If not what then?

thanks

and are these figure, cam gear figures or crank figures as 1 degree on cam is 2 on crank

Other way around. Most people have had success with about two degrees advance on the inlet & four degrees retard on the exhaust, but it varies from car to car. What you are going to be doing is increasing the cam overlaps - something Nissan couldn't do because of the emissions problems this gives.

1 degree on the cam is two degrees on the crank. Measure everything in crank degrees & don't forget to compensate with the ignition timing when you are done.

I would get it on a dyno mate, even if you have to drop the front tailshaft.

I would rather be sure then have someone who might have got their settings mixed up and end up with bigger problems (not having a go at anyone in this thread).

Cheers

So...Can we get another to confirm its 2 degrees advance on plenum side and 4 retard on exhaust????

Yes, that is correct. Get it done on a dyno, because results vary from car to car depending on the tune and/or setup. The +2/-4 degrees gives you a good idea on where to start looking.

  • 9 months later...

I am wondering what type of tune my car has been steup for.

I had a look at the os giken gears and exhaust is retard 4 increments and inlet is adv 6 increments does this sound right to you guys?

What sort of effect would this have on the tune.

I have read that inlet is normally around 2 increments this seems very different.

The car goes really well just interested if it is setup to bring on boost or what?

mods rb26, exhaust, filters ,PFC 15psi, os cam gears.

    • Working through possible solutions of converting my mechanical speedo.    Anyone know what type of speedo sensor the factory r34 gtr getrag has ? what the output is ? I assume its not a VSS and more a voltage like earlier speedo sensors ? Can an ECU read it ?

    • I can get more photos of it here soon and I plan to make a thread detailing the process. I received the car this way and it sorely needs refinishing. That is probably the most appealing photo of it. Up close it is fading, cracked, and needs to be re-glued. Depending on their condition I'm on the fence between refinishing or making a new set.  Another angle hiding the pimples and razor pumps
    • According to this thread the RS4V with build plate RC40 comes with the R200 diff @ 4.083 ratio as well (mine has said RC40 denotation). We may need to check if the axle stubs are the same pattern as well. The auto subframes have longer axles. However I think yours being a later Series 2 as well, we should have the same bolt pattern for the diff stubs. Unless your upgraded rear also has upgraded axles. Either way, I would not be opposed to pulling the covers to check so I can inspect that  fancy rear core  Also I don't have HICAS. I don't believe that should change things but I hope the people here with heaps more experience than me can correct me if I'm wrong   Let me know if you want to attempt to make this work and I can get some pictures of mine from under the car.
    • It's not that straightforward. For example I have had this code because my ignitor/power transistor wires were unplugged. It knows something is wrong but has no idea what it means. If you want to actually diagnose this I recommend following the service manual flowchart for code 21. Ohm out the harness, coilpacks, inspect the ECU, etc. And again, it's entirely possible for there to be no problem at all but if you're running a different coilpack it'll trigger the code because it doesn't like what it sees.
