Hi guys,

Im tossing up weather Im gonna get a Lexus soarer or R33 Skyline at the moment, just wondering if you could list some common problems with the R33 GTST Skyline 1995 model in particular to look out for .. when buying a second hand skyline and just in general user/driver problems

cheers mike

you're comparing apples and oranges.

if you're after a luxury hi-way cruiser, then go the soarer. a heavy car like it is well suspended for a good cruise feel. a skyline in other hand, is more a handling car. you can always put a firm aftermarket suspension in soarer to make it handle even better than r33 gts-t, but that kinds of spoil the true purpose of soarers.

i think both cars should be reliable piece of machinery when they're regularly had oil change & service. bad maintenance and wrong tuning especially when they're boosted up would surely gives u lots of problem, no matter skyline or soarer, rb or jz engine..

I have an R33, my brother has a Soarer so listen to me okay :(

The Soarer pulls harder in a straight line in stock form, however it is an auto so when it comes to going for a joyride, the manual R33 is a lot more fun. A lot! Both cars seems to struggle once the revs get up if you haven't done the exhaust.

The soarer in my opinion is nicer on the inside (my brother has the full black interior, sweet stuff) and the R33 in my opinion is nicer on the outside.

Both cars are reliable when purchased in good condition. Both of ours are 94 models, however my turbo crapped itself and his gearbox crapped itself so both of them have been upgraded.

Stock for stock? I'd take the Skyline because a slightly lighter, manual is more fun to drive, even though is loses out slightly in a straight line.

My car vs his car? Weeeelll I have $10k of mods so there's no comparison. None at all.

:sadam:

Iv'e had my 98 R33 GTST for 12 mths now , Had no problems done 98,000 Ks. Like new inside & out ,no mods to the car .just like new .

Mike, I have both in the driveway, that is if you are looking at the V8. As Rianto said, apples and oranges. Don't even think of the sixes in the Soarer. Lowbrow low budget wannabes. V8, leather with as many options as possible including the airbag or active suspension.

Yeah, there are problems with both. Take a look at the ALSC website for Soarer problems and fixes. http://www.lexus.australia.as/entry.htm

That's a tough call mate, the IJZ it widely considered to be one of the best inline 6 cylinder engines in the world... I wouldn't consider any of the Soarers to be "above" another, all are similarly priced and I see just as many V8s as 6s.

After having the 1jz in the Mark2 I can highly recommend it.

It would hand the V8 its arse in a race no problem. However they do not come with the leather, no. I would fore-go this luxury to be able to move around faster then an v6 commodore....

Mate look over there . Reach across and crank up the tunes on the 7 speaker sound system (91 model with over 200K km and it still sounds great) but hey, I do still like to build a crankin' stereo as in the Lynx I have so I have something to compare it to.

If you want to race, get a GTR or work hard building a GTS25t that will go for that rwd action. In fact I'm selling one of the five cars to keep the Soarer, and it's the auto skyline R33 that's going as I also wanna keep the 4 banger Lynx.

Once again though, they are different beasts and I couldn't choose between the GTR, GTS25t and the Soarer so I just keep them all.

You'll have to change that username then

With the Supra, try stick with the later model (I recall after 95/96) for the better brake package. No idea of price lately and I expect they are holding value well, but an early GTR32 might be a better priced option.

    • On BMWs what I do because I'm more confident that I can't instantly crush the pinch welds and do thousands of USD in chassis damage is use a set of rubber jacking pads designed to protect the chassis/plastic adapter and raise a corner of the car, place the aforementioned 2x12 inch wooden planks under a tire, drop the car, then this normally gives me enough clearance to get to the front central jack point. If you don't need it to be a ramp it only needs to be 1-1.5 feet long. On my R33 I do not trust the pinch welds to tolerate any of this so I drive up on the ramps. Before then when I had to get a new floor jack that no longer cleared the front lip I removed it to get enough clearance to put the jack under it. Once you're on the ramps once you simply never let the car down to the ground. It lives on the ramps or on jack stands.
    • Nah. You need 2x taps for anything that you cannot pass the tap all the way through. And even then, there's a point in response to the above which I will come back to. The 2x taps are 1x tapered for starting, and 1x plug tap for working to the bottom of blind holes. That block's port is effectively a blind hole from the perspective of the tap. The tapered tap/tapered thread response. You don't ever leave a female hole tapered. They are supposed to be parallel, hence the wide section of a tapered tap being parallel, the existince of plug taps, etc. The male is tapered so that it will eventually get too fat for the female thread, and yes, there is some risk if the tapped length of the female hole doesn't offer enough threads, that it will not lock up very nicely. But you can always buzz off the extra length on the male thread, and the tape is very good at adding bulk to the joint.
    • Nice....looking forward to that update
    • Neg, the top one is actually for the front. The sizes are 18x10.5 +18 and 18x11 +32.   I measured many times but I'm sure I'll have problems as this is the thread for problems.
