Guys,

What is happening to the market?

Where did are all the skyline buyers go?

Is the new P plate power restrictions having an imapct on the used skyline market?

Or is its just me???

Just on these forums alone, there seams to be r33 gts-t's going for really good prices! even r32 gtr's for mid to low 20's. Heck i'm thinking bout buying a gtr myself at these prices. But then again i have to sell my r33 first.... doh!

I am in the process of selling my r33-gtst and am not having very much luck.

I dont think my 'line' is the fastest one on the market right now but i know that she's been well looked after. Its been on sale for at least a month now and i have come across a few other similar stories.

Having gone though this, i'm tempted just to just keep the car and try selling again if/when the market picks up???

Can anybody shed some light on the current used skyline situation?

Anyone else feel the same???

thanks for the replies guys,

Sounds like it has all to do with.... supply vs demand???

Going by current trends the supply of ‘lines is only going to increase.

I know that almost all cars depreciate but this could mean bad news for current sellers like myself and any potential future sellers.

On the other hand this could mean a gr8 time to snap up a bargain skyline!

going through the adds on the for sale section on SAU + other internet car sale sites... only makes me want to by another more modded skyline!

Ummm GF wasnt too impressed with that idea as we need the money for 'our future'

What can i/we do to help hold the value of our lines???

I’m guessing the answer is 'not-much'.... except to say that we should enjoy our 'lines whilst we are lucky enough to own them!

Yep, I agree with ferni.... The import market is flooded. There is just too many out there, and the market is such that you are definately better off buying locally if you are chasing a car with a few mods rather than importing yourself, unless you are chasing something a little different. But in the case of 33s there is definatley too many here now :P. But it makes parts very easy to get so you take the good with the bad I suppose.

I know I have lost out big time with my GTR if prices keep going the way they are, but I have no intention of selling anytime soon so it doesn't really bother me too much...

i couldnt belive my eyes today when browsing carsales and trading post....

no less then FOUR r32 gtr's, all under 20k!!! landed and complied

one even had a power fc, 2 with 17"'s, 2 with adjustable suspension, and 2 with under 120kms (questionable)!!!!

also questionable is the quality of course. but when the 15yo import rule finished i was cursing that i hadnt bought a r32 gtr for ~25.......

havnt seen any of these cars in the sales section, but if you are a seller, watch out in the next few weeks/months

FYI I am looking 2 buy in the next month (after tax time) a r32 gtr or r33 for a 3.0 upgrade

i put somthing else to this thread...

was the government right (from an australian budget point of view) to tighten the 15yo rule (to protect 2nd hand skyline competitors, whatever car they are)?

i guess maybe not, as this tightening wont really do much (you can still get r32, 33 etc under a different scheme).... would then the only solution be FURTHER tightening? ie. NO imports (i cant belive i just wrote that, and for the record i dont support this!)

any other views on the future of import prices??

Just know that when you buy your Skyline you are not buying an investment. Think of it as a consumable

This is why with cars (especially imports) it's often vital to make sure you get exactly the car you want first time round, because selling it when you change your mind is going to lose you a LOT of money.

Im betting they were all 15 year + cars though....

Now that that scheme has finished, there will be no more r32 gtst and hardly any r32 gtrs coming in, it wont be worth it. (No mods allowed, $4k compliance)

Theres way too many r33 gtst around, series 1 cars are worth about the same as r32 gtst.

People shouldnt expect any extra money for having mods, most people like to buy a car which is pretty standard (the whole belief that no/little mods = not thrashed) so they can do what they want with them.

Dee 33: Not if you get a really good deal!!!! j/k

I think your all just a bunch of whinging babies :(

I know a girl who bought a Toyota Celica last year for 18k its now worth 14k if she's lucky. Ask someone who bought a commodore how much its gone down in value in the last 12 months..

Its not just imports that drop in value fast

i have a feeling the run of the R32's could end a bit dead too..

So many R33 at cheap prices, and for most the "overall package" of the R33 is more appealing compared to an R32.. More and more R34's seem to be coming up at good prices, importers will be bringing more of them (as they know there is a market for them, not so flooded) at low $20's.. pushing the R33's even further down to $10-$15k levels.. $15k max for a nice modded R33.. $20k maybe for an R34 (talking 2 years maybe)

I even question the decision to sell up the R33 ($20k i got clear, woot), and go down to the R32.. and spend another $5-6k on that. By the time it hits $15k i could have got another cheap R33, but then again, it wouldn't be setup exactly how I like.

You would have to be really keen to purchase an R32 for $15k.. when there are many R33 for that price now..

im finding not too much interest in selling my GTR.. yeah im tryn to sell it with a damaged engine atm, but it makes me wonder even if i do fix it will i be able to sell it then?? i have to get rid of the car for the same old story that happens alot but "its gotta make way for some property".. i may even have to start selling off the mods maybe its better in the long run...

++++

Greetings All.

Im VERY interested guys, but the problem is, that is the wrong time for me...and its killing me!! Seeing all these nice R33's and R32's for sale, and the fact that when im ready to buy, they will prolly not be on the market...

Cheers,

You'd be supprised mate

theres allways plenty of decent skylines for sale...

on that note there is also alot of crap on the market also...

don't be too worried, your car is out there!

-Ruffels

because all these silly people imported thier car instead of buying whats already imported and the market is flooded.

The opposite could be said too...

"because all these silly people didn't face facts and tried to sell their local cars for $10k+ more than an equivalent car could be imported for, the market is flooded"

i reckon people are getting smart about the whole import situation............

originally driving an import was a fairly unique thing, but the last time i was in OZ there were lots of skylines about (i saw 4 at an intersection late at night, little traffic about, not a cruise they were facing different directions) so they're not anything different. they have a rep for getting flogged so mechanic bills are high and they're a target by cops, theives, holden bogans at the lights and vandalists. for many they're simply not worth the effort when there's a lot more discreet motors about with similar performance but less trouble attached........

if you include the price of repairs and defect notices they're not that cheap............

    • This. A 3d wheel alignment is like $120...just take it to the shop. Since theres probably multiple adjustments that need to be made after changing something. Mine has front/rear lower arms, traction rods, tension rods, camber arms, toe arms, front upper arms, hicas kit, sway bars and coilovers. I measure from the edge of the bolt holes on the originals and set the same length on all the adjustable stuff to dial it as close as I could to OEM. Took it straight for alignment; it didnt feel right at all...after alignment, it feels perfect. Similarly i've just changed the springs on another car; and I still needed multiple adjustments to bring it back in spec.

    • Its a well known brand in New Zealand; its a rebrand of the Rhino RAV3.  I don't know what the wiring difference *is* between the rev.1 (installed about 15 years ago) and rev.2; but as you say I would think its reasonable that it uses the same immobiliser relay circuits. I had a look but couldnt see a similar harness; but didnt move things around since I didnt want to mess with it   It was one of AVS well known Authorised Installers; I spoke to AVS themselves about it but theyre unsure hence seeking advice more so from the skyline community who are more familiar with the actual car and its wiring. Im in Auckland; but the installer is on the other side of the city so hes very reluctant to come back to even look at it to confirm something isnt connected into the wrong wire.  I dont want to drop the name since they *did* do a really good job for the most part. Everything is very tidy and he fully replaced all the alarm wiring, all the sensors, the wiring to the door motors, installed a switch which was never installed in the first place...really happy with the alarm install itself..just not this one issue. We all make mistakes, if it is the alarm, I just want my fuel pump getting proper switched, fused, power as it was; without having to shell out for an auto electrician to switch a wire and tell me it was the alarm.
    • Even with the piston at TDC there was room for it to drop, but I don't think it can drop fully into the cylinder, the problem you have is that you need something pushing against the valve to hold it up so you have enough room to put the new stem seal on and the spring etc.  I used compressed air only because putting rope in the cylinder seemed a bit risky to me, I know people have done it countless times before like this. Overall it's a pain in the ass job. Honestly you'd probably be better off taking the head off because the risk of dropping something in the engine and the finicky-ness of it all is very stressful. If you are going to attempt it though i 10000% recommend a 36050 valve spring/keeper tool. I had both the traditional lever type and after doing 1 cylinder it was absolute pain to get those valve keepers in place, even with 2 people. That 36050 is amazing, you do have to push hard to get them in place but it works perfectly almost every time. Back to my actual issue I think my engine is just tired and old and the rings have gone bad. The comp numbers (cold, no oil) were: Cyl 1 -129psi Cyl 2 - 133psi Cyl 3 - 138psi Cyl 4 - 137psi Cyl 5 - 157psi Cyl 6 - 142psi   Cylinder 5 and 6 having the most carbon on them.
    • Who did you have do the installation? I actually know someone who is VERY familiar with the AVS gear. The main point of contact though would be your installer.   Where are you based in NZ?
